Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 2'7, 1906.
Application filed August 14, 1905. Serial No. 274.019.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID E. BOWN, a resident of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and usefullmprovement in Attachment- Plugs for Electric Lighting; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof. V g
My invention relates to attachment-plugs, and has special reference to such plugs as are used in electric lighting. I
The object of m invention is torovide an attachment-plug or the sockets 0' incandescent lamps in electric lighting which will be cheap an simplein its construction, will contain few parts, and will be capable of being manufactured easily and assembled conveniently and rapidly.
To these ends my invention consists, generally stated, in the novel arrangement, construction, and combination of arts, as hereinafter more specifically set fort and described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to construct and use my improved attachment-plug, 1 will describe the same more fully, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal central section of m improved attachment-plug. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same and showing a portion thereof in section. Fig. 3 is a cross-section on the line 3 3, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 isa cross-section on the line 4 4, Fig. 3. Figs. 5 and 6 are views showing another form of my improved ll ike symbols of reference herein indicate like parts" in each of the figures of the draw- 111 s.
As illustrated in the drawings, 1 represents my improved attachment-plug, which is provided with the body portion 2, referably formed of porcelain, and such b0 portion has the head 3 and shank 4 formed t ereon.
The head 3 is formed integral and solid with the shank 4 and is provided'with the curved outer face 5 and serrated ed e 6 on said face, while leading through sai head into the shank 4 of the body portion 2 arethe openings or passage-ways 7 7 for the passing of the wires 8 8 through the same, which are connected at their ends within said shank to the terminals 9 9, respectively, therein.
Fitting around the shank 4 of the body portion 2 is the screw-cap 10, which is usuallyformed of brass or copper and engages with the screw-threads i', formed on the outer face of said shank by its threaded body 10. This screw-cap 10 carries the cap-plate 11, which is preferably formed of porcelain and has an opening 1 1 formed through the same, through which a contact-pin 12 is adapted to pass and be screwed into the terminal 9, while the head 12 of said in fits within a countersunk hole 13, formed in a contact-plate 13, which is held against .said cap-plate by said pin and is adapted to engage with the contactpoint of the incandescent-lamp socket. (Not shown.) The inner end of the threaded body 10 on the screw-cap 10 when in place engages witha spring-plate 14, connected to the ter minal 9, and such threaded body is adapted to enga e and form contact with the usual threade lamp-socket when in dplace in the lamps. If desired, the threade cap 10 can be permanently secured to the body portion 2 by making indentations in the threaded body 10 of said cap and also by soldering the terminal 9 to said body 10, as shown at 14 in Fig. 6, thereby doing away with the springplate 14, and in this case the ca -plate 11 is removably held in place in the 0d the screw or contact-pin 12. It wil thus be seen that my improved attachment-plug is of such a construction that it will do away with a number of parts usually employed 1n this class of plugs, thereby reatly cheapening the cost of manufacture of the same and saving time in the assembling thereof. The use of the integral or solid head enables quicker and firmer connections to be made by oing into the bottom of the plug, and this wi l prevent any wire from coming in contact with another, as with connections or terminals at the top there vwas always great liabilit of the wires becoming loose, which woul form a short circuit, and thereby cause a fire. It will also be seen that in the use of ca s for the passing of the wires they were iable to pull ofi the plug and hang down, which is ereby avoided, and in this device there is no liability of any of the parts becoming loose or dropping off the plug.
Various modifications and changes in the design and construction of my improved attachmentplug'may be resorted to without departing from t e spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. An attachment-plug comprising a body portion having a shank, a screw-cap-connected to said shank, and a cap-plate on said cap and removably connected to said shank.
2. An attachment-plug comprising a body portion having a shank, a screw-cap connected to said shank, a cap-plate on said cap and means engaging with said shank for remov ably holding said cap in place.
3. An attachment-plug comprising a body portion having a shank, a cap connected to said shank, a'cap-plate on said cap and having an opening therein, and a contact-pin passing through said opening and engaging with said shank,
4. An attachment-plug for lamp-sockets
