Description

No. 836,901. PATENTED NOV. 2'7, 1906.
G. STAPP & NFK. ROBERTSON.
OOVERER FOR PLANTERS.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 21. 1906.
IINITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE STAFF AND NEWTON K. ROBERTSON, OF SIDNEY, TEXAS.
I COVERER FOR PLANTERS.
Patented NOV. 27, 1906.
Application filed ay 21, 1906. Serial No. 318,081.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE STAPP and NEWTON K. ROBERTSON, citizens of the United States, residing at Sidney, in the county of Comanche and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coverers for Planters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to attachments for lanters; and it has for its object to rovide for the ready lifting of the covering-p ows so as to enable accumulated trash to be discharged from the covcrers when planting is in progress.
A further object of the invention is to provide a simple and convenient attachment which may be readily applied to various types of planters for the urposes set forth.
Further objects of t e invention are to simplify and improve the construction and operation of this class of devices.
With these and other ends in View, which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
' In the accompanying drawings there has been shown a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited,
ut that changes, alterations, and modifications within the scope of the invention may be resorted to when desired.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation showing a conventional type of planter to which the invention has been applied. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the device detached. Fig. 3 is a detail top plan view showing the invention applied.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are designated by like characters of reference.
The improved attachment comprises a foot-lever and lifting member A and a supporting member B.
The member A is permanently secured, as by means of a clip 1, upon a sleeve 2, and said member includes an approximately horizontal lifting portion 3, having at its rear end a lateral extension 4 and at its front end an upturned arm 5, which constitutes the footlever and whichis provided at ornear its shown, said planter being of a type including 7 a frame 11, mounted upon an axle 12, having carrying-wheels 13, A coverer G is shown, including a beam 14, which is hingedly connected at its forward end with the planterframe, as by a bracket 15, de ending from the latter. The planting mechanism is no part of the present invention.
In the practical application of this device the sleeve carrying the member A is placed upon the axle 12 of the machine, where it is retained by means of set-collars 16 in such a position that the lateral extension 4 at the rear end of the lifting portion 3 shall extend beneath the beam 14 of the coverer. The
supporting member B is secured upon the beam of the coverer in such a position that it will extend beneath the extension 4. The latter is thus confined between the beam and the supporting member, and the portion 5, which constitutes the foot-lever, is thus maintained in a position where it may be readily reached and operated by the foot of the driver, whose seat 17 is suitably supported upon the frame of the machine.
It will be seen that by simply operating the foot-lever the rear end of the coverer may be lifted sufficiently to permit accumulations of stalks, weeds, and other trash to escape.
The device is also useful for the purpose of adjusting and controlling the covering-feet.
on uneven ground.
Having thus described the invention, we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. An attachment for planters comprising a lifting member having a lateral extension, a foot-lever connected with said lifting member, and an independent sup orting member adapted for engagement with the lateral extension of the lifting member.
2. An attachment for planters comprising a lifting member having a lateral extension and an upward projection constituting a footlever, an axleengaging sleeve connected zil v t with said lifting member, and an independent supporting member adaptedfor engagement/with the lateral extension of the lifting member.
3. The combination with a wheel-supported-planter having a coverer including a eam hingedly connected with the planterframe at its forward end, of a lifting member having a sleeve mounted for oscillation upon the'aXle-of' the planter, said lifting member having a lateral extension proj ecting'beneath the beam of: the coverer, and a supporting member secured upon the said beam-and including an arm extending 'forwardly'beneath the lateral extension ofthe lifting member.
' 4; The combination with a wheel supported planter having a coverer including a eamhlngedly connected with the planterframe at its forward end, of a lifting member having'avsle'evemounted for oscillation u on the axle of the planter, said lifting mem er having-at'itsfront end an upwardly-extenda sion of the lifting'member'.
In testimony whereof we hereunto BJfiX our signaturesin presence of two-wltnesses:
GEORGE STAPP. NEWTON K.v ROBERTSON.
Witnesses:
