Description

EDWARD PAYNE SHAW, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
MIXING OR STlRRlNG DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 6, 1906.
Application filed April 25, 1905- Serial No. 257,359.
To all whom it nwty concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD PAYNE SHAW,
a citizen of the United States, residing at New ork, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mixing or Stirring Devices, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to mixing and stirring devices 5 and the object thereof is to provide im roved devices of this class desi ned particu arly for use by barkeepers in mafiiing mixed drinks, but which may be used as a household stirring device or kitchen utensil; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in a device of the class specified, constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure l is a sectional side view of my improved mixing device and showing the same applied to an ordinary glass or goblet, which is also insection; Fig. 2, a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings forming part of this specification I have shown at a an ordinary glass or goblet, such as is usually employed in barrooms or other drinking laces, and in the practice of my invention i provide a mixing device which com rises a cover I), ada ted to be placed on the g ass or goblet a and aving a depending flange or rim b, which fits in said glass or goblet, and placed on and connected with the cover I) in any desired manner is a yoke-shaped device 0, having a laterally-directed top loop or bend 0 provided with an u wardly-directed arm or handle member 0 t e upper end of which is preferably provided with an eye or opening c, whereby the device when not in use may be hung up or suspended from a nail, hook, or other suport. p The cover I) is provided with a central opening b and assing therethrough and through the top of tfie yoke-shaped member 0 is a shaft member d, the upper end of which is ivoted in the top of the laterally-directed oop or bend 0 as shown at d, and mounted on the shaft member (1, within the laterall directed loop or bend a, is a beveled gear-w ed 0, and a larger beveled gear-wheelf is supported at the bottom of the upright arm or handle member 0 as shown at f and rovided with a crank-handle f", and the w heel f meshes with the wheel (2, and the turning of the wheel f will rapidly revolve or turn the shaft member d.
The shaft memberd is provided at its lower end with or formed into the handle of a spoon (Z and said shaft member at its lower end is preferably turned to one side, or the lower end thereof is held at an angle to the main top portion thereof, so that the spoon (I when turning will also describe a circle in the lass or goblet a and more completely and ully agitate, stir, and mix the contents thereof.
The beveled wheel 6 in the form of construction shown is provided with a downwardly-directed hub 6 which is countersunk in the yoke-shaped member 0 and provided with an annular groove 6 and a set-screw g is passed through the top portion of the yokeshaped member 0 into said groove, and this holds the wheel 6 in connection with the yokeshaped member 0.
One side of the cover I) is perforated, as shown at 5 and when the contents of the glass or goblet a, which usually contains ice and other substances, have been thoroughly stirred or agitated or mingled the glass or goblet and stirrin device or the cover I) thereof may be grasped in the hand and tilted, so that the liquid contents of the lass or goblet will flow out through the perforations b of the cover I), while the ice and other solid substances will remain in said glass or goblet.
My improved mixing and stirring device may be used for any of the various purposes for which such devices are usually employed, and it will be apparent that the cover I) may be so formed as to pern it of its application to goblets or sin ilar vessels of different sizes.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is
1. In a mixing device of the class described, a cover adapted to be applied to and to closel fit a goblet or similar vessel, said cover being provided with a support, a spoon having a shank which is passed upwardly through said cover and said support, a gearwheel mounted on the shank of the spoon within said support, and another gear-wheel mounted above the last-named ear-Wheel and meshin therewith and provi ed with a orank-handfia 2. In a mixing device of the class described, a cover adapted. to be applied to and to olosel fit a goblet or similar vessel, said cover being provided with a support, a spoon having a shank which is passed upwardly through said cover and said support, a gear- Wheel mounted on the shank of the spoon Within said support, and another gear-wheel mounted above the last-named gear-wheel and meshing therewith and provided with a crank-handle, that part of the shank of the spoon below the cover being bent laterally.
In testimon that I claim the foregoing as my invention have signed mynaine, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 20th day of April, 1905.
EDNVARD PAYNE SHAW.
