'Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 6, 1906.
Appuomqn mea september 1s. isos. serial No. 279.026.
To all whom 'it may concern.'
Beit known that I, SILAs D. SLocUM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alexandria, in the county of Alexandria and State of Virginia, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Switch- Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such aswill enable others skilled in the art to which `it appertains to make and use the sanne, reference being hadto the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful vimprovements in adjusting mechanism for switch-boxes, covers for junction or outlet boxes, &c., and comprises means whereby a box may be easily, quickly, and accessibly adjusted to adapt the same to various thicknesseslof plaster of walls in order to bring a lid or plate of the box Hush with the surface ofthe wall.
My invention comprises variousdetails of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described. and then defined in the appended claims. l
.I illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which` Figure l is a perspective view of a switchbox, showing my adjusting mechanism as applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail perspective showing one en d of a box and the adjustable bracket to which the lid or .closure of the box `is adapted to Nbe fastened. ig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3 3 of Fig. 2
Alooking in the direction ofthe arrow. Fig. 4
is a sectional perspective view showing the application of my invention to thevlid of an outlet or junction box, and Fig. 5 is a sectional view transversely through the form illustrated in Fig. 4.
Reference now being had to the details of 4the drawings by letter, A designates a metallic switch-box of the usual construction, having lips A', which are outwardly bent from the wall of the box and are apertured to receive the screws B. Two of the opposite sides of the box are rovfided'with elongated slots C, and each wa l in'which the slots are formed is indentured,f'as clearly shown in the drawings, .and especially in Fig. 3., and D designates a -turned lugs formed from the bracket member also indenturedj and corresponding in the o posite Walls of said box. The two outwar y-bent portions of said walls and bracket-plates vformed byv their indentures form guldes, whereby said plates may be inoved longitudinally upon the surface of the E E designate screws which are passed through elongated slots one on each side of the box, and the threaded portion of each screw is designed to engage the threads in the marginal wall `of an aperture F, formed in the plate D, whereby the plates may be held in adjusted positions. Each plate 'D'has outwardly-bent arms D, which are apertured, as at d, to receive screws for fastening the plate and the box, to which it is adjustably eld securely to the llath about an opening formed in the wall or to any other fixed object. j
In Fig. 4 of the drawings I have shown the application of my adjusting meshanism as applied to an outlet-box, in which the letter K designates the upper portion of the box, having a ange K about the central aper-I ture therein. N N designate inwardlyflange K', and each of saidl lugs is apertured to recelve a swiveled end O of a screw Ol, which is mounted in a threadedv aperture in the flange top Q,'which iits over the flange K of the box.
From the foregoing it will be noted that by the-provision of the adjusting mechanism shown and described access may be easily and quickly had to the screws, which may be turned in one direction or the other, accordingly as it is desired to have the box moved inone direction or the other, the bracket members being held stationary, this adjustment being lnecessary in order to bring the outer edges of the boxes flush with the faces of walls in4 which the boxes are countersunk. Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. An adjusting mechanism for switch and outlet boxes, comprising, in combination with a box having apertured lugs therein, bracket members adapted to be4 fixed to a wall and having sliding connection with' said box, -clampin,gj-screws mounted in slots in the b`ox and adapted to hold the latter in adjust; ed positions in relation bers, as set forth.
to thev indentures formed to said bracket mem-v 2. An adjusting mechanism for switch and outlet boxes, comprising, in combination With a box, the opposite Walls of which are slotted and indentured, apertured lips projecting from the Wall of the box, screws mounted in said lips, and `designed to hold a closure against the o en end of the latter,
bracket members, eac lbeing bent so as to be guided in the indentures formed in the box, and a screw passing through each of; said slots and engaging one of said bracket' -of said box, clamping-screws, one mounted in each of said slots and engaging a threaded aperture in one of said bracket members, an apertured lip projecting/f' from each slotted side of the box, a clamping-screw carried by each lip forming means for attaching a closure to the box, as set forth.
4. An adjustingv mechanism for switchboxes, comprising, in combination With aA lbox, having slots formed in the opposite sides thereo the sides of said Walls being indentured, with the endiof each indentured portion turned at an angle forming a lip adapted for the attachment thereto of a closure to the box, a bracket member having an indentured portion what is guided in the in;
denture formed in the side of the box, a clamping-screw passing through each slot and engagin a threaded aperture in a bracket mem er, as set forth.
5. An adjusting mechanism for switchboxes, &c., comprising, in combination with a box, having-its op osite sides slotted, the sides adjacent to sa1d)` slots beingindentured, the outer ends of said indentured portions bent at an angle forming a lip for the attachment thereto of a closure to the box, bracket members, each indentured and fitting over the indentured portions Aof said box in order to guide the latter, and a clamping-screw mounted in each slot and engaging a threaded aperture in a bracket member, the ends of said bracket member extending one on each side of said lip, and outwardly bent and adapted to be fastened to a Wall, as set forth.
6. A junction-box having integral out- Wardly-turned ears at the upper edge thereof, brackets at the sides of the box, and means for securing said brackets to the box in various positions of adjustment, said brackets having outwardly-extending portions formed to facilitate securing them to the Woodwork of the supporting structure and cut away to provide openings in which said earsare received.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
