Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 26, 1904. Serial No. 200,221.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, HENRY E. WHIPPLE and HIRAM W. BLAISDELL, citizens of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Distributers; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, suchas will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to means for handling material, and particularly to apparatus for distributing material in receptacles or vats; and some of the objects of'the invention are to provide an apparatus of this general character which will be simple and cheap in construction and at the same time efficient for the purpose intended.
Another object of the invention is to provide a centrifugal distributer so constructed as to be capable of being removed from an operative to an inoperative position in relation to the receptacle in connection with which the distributer is used.
A further object of the invention is to provide means for conveying the material to the distributer capable of being removed into an inoperative position, to afford access to the receptacle-vat.
It is also an object of this invention to provide a distributer proper having detachable arms capable of ready engagement and disengagement with the distributer.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists, essentially, in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, substantially as more fully described in the following specification and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming part of this application, in which Figure 1 is an elevational view, partly broken away and partly in section, illustrating the apparatus in operative position in connection with the receptacle or vat. Fig. 2 is a top plan view, partly broken away, of the construction illustrated in Fig. 1. Figs. 3, 4, 5, and 6 are enlarged detail views illustrating the means for removably connecting the detachable arms with the distributer roper, and Fig. 7 is a detail view of the antifriction-bearing- Similar characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings, and particu- I larly to the construction illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 thereof, reference character 1 designates an upright or support, preferably rovided with a bracket or pulley 2, adapte to receive a rope or cable 3 to be connected with the free end of a trough or pipe 4, having an elbow 5 constructed to receive a tubular extension 6 on a launder or other device 7, around which extension the trough or pipe 4 is adapted to rotate or is swiveled by means of a threaded rod 8, having a crank or handle 9 and a threaded portion carrying a tap or nut 10, said rod being rotatably mounted in a base or socket 11 of any preferred form and construction.
By means of the construction just described the trough or pipe 4 can be moved laterally into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2 in order to afford access to the receptacle or vat 12, in connection with which the device may be used, the rod 8 being employed to afforda tight connection between the trough or pipe 4 and the launder 7 when the parts are in operative position and to loosen said joint or connection between the parts when it is desired to move the trough or pipe 4 into theinoperative position, (illustrated in Fig. 2,) as will be readily understood.
Rotatably mounted in suitable supports or brackets 13 and 14 is a standard or upright 15, with which is movably connected a frame or other device 16, which is preferably elevated or lowered by means of a rope or cable 17, one end of which is desirably connected with a block or other device 18, attached to the upper end of the standard 15 and passing through a block 19, desirably attached to the 5 free end of the frame 16, and from said block 19 back through the block 18 down to a drum or Windlass 20, carrying gear-wheel 21, engaged by a pawl 22 and with which meshes a pinion 23 on the shaft carrying a crank or handle 24, by means of which the rope or cable 17 can be wound upon the drum or windlass to elevate the frame 16 into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 of the drawmgs.

slotted member 31 of a detachable coupling, said member being preferably provided with an extension or arm 32, carrying an adjusting screw or device 33, Figs. 3 to 6 of the drawings.
Tubular arms 34 may be provided of any I suitable size and length and'preferably having elbows or deflected ends 35, from which the material is discharged by centrifugal action during the rotation of the distributer, as will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains, and each of the arms 34 is preferably provided with threaded ends constructed to receive members 36 of the said coupling, and these members are preferably provided with an extension or arm 37, constructed to re movably enter and be retained in the slot in the extensions 32 on the other member of said coupling, substantially as illustrated. in detail in Figs. 3, 4, 5, and 6 of the drawings.
By means of the construction last described the arms34 of the distributer can be readily detached or disconnected from the distributer proper when it is desired to move the same into inoperative position, as when the distributer will be required to be moved close up to a wall or partition adjacent to the receptacle or vat in connection with which the distributer is being used, the arms 34 being shown removed from the distributer in dotted lines in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
The operation of the invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and the following explanation thereof The material is introduced into the launder 7 in any suitable manner and is caused to gravitate toward the end thereof and to descend into the trough 4, from which it gravitates into the hopper 28, from which the material passes into the dis tributing-arms 34 of the distributer in the usual manner. The exit of the material from the distributing-arms 34 imparts a rotary motion to the distributer proper, and the centrifugal force of the material occasioned by the rotation of the distributer distributes the material uniformly throughout the recep taole or vat 12, as will be readily understood by those skilled in the art hydrometallurgy. When the receptacle or vat shall have been filled to the desired height, the connection between the trough 4 and the launder 7 can be loosened by means of the adjusting-rod 8, and the trough can be swung laterally into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2 of the drawings, whereupon the drum or wind-' lass 20 can be operated to wind the cable or rope 17 thereon and elevate the distributer into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 of the drawings. In order to disengage the distributing-arms 34, it is only necessary to elevate the free end thereof, so as to bring the extension 37 out of engagement with the extension 32 of the coupling and withdraw said extension 37, as will be understood, whereupon the distributer may be swung laterally from over the receptacle or vat 12, and an excavator or other apparatus may be brought into position above the receptacle or vat for the purpose of further treating the material.
We claim' 1. Means for handling material provided with a launder, a discharging device having movable connection therewith and a reactionary distributer receiving the material from said device.
2. Means for handling materialprovided with a launder, having a tubular extension, a receiving device movably mounted around said extension, means for adjusting the connection between said device and launder and a distributer receiving the material from said device.
3. Means for handling material provided with a launder having a tubular extension, a trough having an elbow receiving said extension, an adjusting device to regulate the connection between said parts and a distributer receiving the material from the trough.
4. Means for handling material provided with a centrifugal distributer constructed with arms detachable by being raised.
5. Means for handling material provided with a distributer carrying coupling members, arms carrying coupling members, whereby the arms by being raised may be disengaged from the distributer and means for introducing material into the distributer.
6. Means for handling material provided with a distributer having slotted coupling members, arms carrying coupling members constructed to enter said slotted member and means for introducing material into the distributer.
7. Means for handling material provided with a distributer carrying slotted coupling members having adjusting devices, distributer-arms each carrying a coupling member constructed to enter said slotted member and be adjusted by said device and means for introducing material into the distributer.
8. Means for handling material provided with a pivoted supporting-frame, a distributer connected with said frame, means for elevating the distributer and means for introducing material into the distributer.
9. Means for handling material provided with an upright, a frame movably connected therewith, a device for elevating said frame, a distributer carried by said frame and means for introducing material into the distributer.
10. Means for handling material provided with a rotatable support, a frame movably connected therewith, a device connected with said frame and support for elevating the latter, a distributer carried by said frame, having detachable arms and means for introducing material into the distributer.
11. A reactionary distributer with detachable arms held in position by gravity with devices for adjusting the connections of said arms.
12. Means for handling material having a reactionary distributer provided with detachable arms held in position by gravity.
13. Means for handling material provided with a pivoted support, a frame connected therewith, a reactionary distributer provided with detachable arms connected with said frame and means for introducing material into the distributer.
14:. Means for handling material provided with a rotatable support, a frame movably connected therewith, a reactionary distributer, means for introducing material and devices for raising said distributer.
