UNITED ST TES PATENT OFFICE. Y
WILLIAM L. WARD, OF. PORT CHESTER, NEW YORK.
MANUFACTURE OF NUTS- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 16, 1906.
Application filed y 16. 1905- Serial No. 260.632.
manufacture of nuts which effects a saving of material and time, bein readily produced and transformed into nished nuts with practically no scrap waste. The nature and characteristic features of the improvements will more fully appear by reference to the following descri tion'and the accompanying drawings in i ustration thereof, of which Figure 1 is a plan viewof a bar of metal nut-blanks made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is asectional view thereof, taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional view thereof, taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fi 4 is a sectional view thereof, taken on the inc 4 4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a plan view of a second form ofthe, invention.
ig. 6 isa sectional view taken on the line 6' 6 of Fig. 5'. Fig. 7 is a sectional view taken on the hue 7 7 of Fi 5. Fi 8 is a sectional view taken on theline 8 8 0 Fig. 5. Fig. 9 is a side elevation of a modified form of the construction shown in Fig. 5. Fig. 10 is a transverse sectional view through the center of a faced nut-blank, and Figfl 1 represents a section of a drilled nut-blank. 1
InFigs. 1 to 4, inclusive, the strip ofmetal shown com rises the nut-blanks 1, having the longitu 'nal ridges or crowns 2 on the facesQ-thereof andthe sinks 3 centrally (lisposed with reference to such faces, the several blanks being divided by the transverse nicks or depressions 4 and the bar having serrated edges 5 to provide for the production of hexagonal blanks when s aration is effected in the planes of the nic s.
In Figs. 5 to 9, inclusive, the bar 6 has the symmetrical pyramidal crowns 7 on the faces thereof with the centrally-disposed sinks 8 therein, the blanks being divided by the transverse depressions 9 of Figs. 5 and 6 or the extended depressions or nicks 9 of Fig. 9.
These forms can be rolled or pressed to sha e readily, rapidly, and without waste. T e metal is disposed so that upon separating the blanks they can be brought to a proximately the final form by .ressure an then drilled and trimmed with ittle loss of material, Fig. 8 representing a section of a blank before facing, Fig. 10 representing a section after facing, andFig. 11 representing a section after boring.
Having described my invention, I claim- 1.- A nut-blank having crowns and sinks on the opposite faces thereof, substantially as specific I 2. A strip of nut-blanks respectively provided with crowns and sinks on the opposite faces, said faces being se arated by depressions or nicks, substantia y as s ecified.
I11 testimony whereof I have ereunto set my hand, this 12th'day of, May, 1905, in the presence ofthe subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM L. WARD.
