RUFUS HENRY DEACON, OF BOLINGBROKE, ONTARIO, CANADA, ASSIGNOR TO ANSLOW HARRINGTON RUDD, OF PERTH, CANADA.
MOUTH-ORGAN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 16, 1906.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that L'RUFUS HENRY DEA-- ooN, a subject of the King of England, residing at Bolingbroke, in the county of Lanark, Province of Ontario, Dominion of "Canada, have invented certain newand useful Improvements" in Mouth-Organs and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in mouth-organs; and it consists in certain novel features in the detail construction and arrangement thereof, which will be more fully described hereinafter and specifically pointed out in the claims.
The object of the invention is to provide an attachment for mouth-organs whereby operation upon the same may be greatly facilitated, and which consists of a slidin mouthpiece attached to the said body of t e organ and having an opening adapted to move in line with the reed-chambers of the said organ, said mouthpiece being constructed to partly conform to the mouth of the user and provided with lip contacting members, by which the said mouthpiece may be gripped while in use.
Referrin to the annexed drawings, in which simi ar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a mouth-organ with the improvement attached, and Fig. 2 is a cross-section taken on line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the parts, 1 is the body of a mouth-organ, to which are attached reed- ,plates 2, which plates are provided with the usual reeds 3, and the said reeds are oppositely located, there being two of such reeds in each chamber 4 of the organ. The reedplates are covered or inclosed by means of protecting-plates 5, each of which protectingplates is formed with a longitudinal groove 6 near the center, in which groove the inturned end 7 of a mouthpiece or slide 8 engages.
The mouthpiece or slide 8 is provided with lip-contacting portions 9, arranged parallel with the sides of the mouth-organ and overlapping the upper portion thereof adjacent to the chambers 4, and is formed with an opening 10, which is adapted to move in line with the reed-chambers 4. The mouthpiece is further provided with the side extensions or guards 11, which extend outwardly from the mouth-organ at the ends of said mouthpiece. The opening 10in said mouthpiece is formed with a rounded edge 12, which is formed by bending the metal thereat downwardly and inwardly, as shown in the sectional view, Fig. 2.
In the operation of this device the user engages the said mouthpiece by pressing the lips upon the members 9 thereof, and by inhaling and exhaling and moving the said mouthpiece along the mouth-organ various notes may be sounded, as desired. The side guards 11 provide a further means for gripping or holding the said mouthpiece to facilitate movement of the same upon the mouth-organ, and the rounded edges 12 in the opening 10 of said mouthpiece provide smooth surfaces, which will prevent cutting or bruising of the lips or tongue While the mouth-organ is being layed upon.
hile I have shown in the accompanying drawings the preferred form of my invention, it will be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise form shown, for many of the details may be changed in form or position without affecting the operativeness or utility of my invention, and I therefore reserve the right to make all such modifications as are included within the scope of the following claims or of mechanical equivalents to the structures set forth.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a mouth-organ, reed-protecting plates having grooves formed longitudinally therein and secured to the body of the said organ, a mouthpiece or slide having lip-contacting portions formed thereon and inwardlyturned edges which are adapted to engage with the said grooves to hold the said mouthpiece, the said mouthpiece being provided with an opening having folded or rounded edges, substantially as described.
2. In a mouth organ, reed protecting plates having grooves formed longitudinally therein and secured to the body of the said organ, a mouthpiece or slide having lip-contacting portions formed thereon and inwardly-turned edges which are adapted to engage-with the said grooves to hold the said mouthpiece, the said mouthpiece being proup I vided with an opening; mt famed-roirounded edges, and sideuards formed 'upon *the said mouthp'iecefa jacent to the said opening, substantially as described..-
. 3. In a mouth-organ; a movable -"I no i1thpiece having a longitudinal opening formed therein, in line with the'openingsiof-the'reed chamber of the said-o gan and adapted to' opening therein, and means forattaching the said mouthpiece tothe body of the organ," substantially as described.
4. vIna mouth-organ; a movable" Inouthpiece having a longitudinal. opening formed therein, in line with the openings of the reed chambers of the said organ, said mouthpiece being suitably connected to thebody of the organ and adapted vto slide longitudinally 7 ing, substantiall as described.-
