Ri fuhren@ through perforations 24a in the plunger 24 forward of the ,arms 29, that operate in said plungers and which are adapted to strike against said arms when the carriage 11 is reciprocated rearwardly to stop said plungers. A plurality of the perforations 24a are preferably provided, as seen in F ig. II, in order that the stop-pins may be variably seated in the plungers'. In the top of. each plunger 24 is a recess 24h, (see Figs. III and IX,) that is adapted to receive a spring-pressed retaining-pin 33, slidably positioned in housings 34, set into one of the bearing-boxes 12, through which the plunger 24 operates. These springpressed retaining-pins serve to hold the plungers from accidental displacement while in their rearmost positions inv order that they may be maintained in fixed positions until positively actuated in the manner to be hereinafter explained.

This hollow. shaft is provided with apertures 44, (seen most clearly in Fig. VIL) that are locatedl in alinement with the cams 39. The Ishaft extends through one of the uprights 3', and'iixed to the extreme end of said shaft is a crank-arm 45, to which the pitman 37 is loosely fitted.

43 designates a rotatable jaw-carrying head mounted upon the hollow shaft 43. This head is provided with a plurality of nutreceiving pockets 49, that are adapted to move in a path of travel directly in front of the nut-receiving jaws 31, carried by the reciprocating p'lungers 24.

and they are surrounded by retraotingsprings 53, which serve to hold the inner ends `of the ejectors pressed against the cams 39 of /the ixed cam member 38.' 1- These cams are to force the ejector outwardly immediately y after a nut' has been craeked'between said jaws and the pocket containing the nut is rotated downwardly and away from the opposing jaw 31.
54 designates a gage-finger carried by the forward box 12 of the carriage 11 and whichl is adapted to enter into one of the bores 48 located between the nut-receiving pockets 49, each time that the carriage 11 is reciprocated forwardly and the rotatable headv 4S is rotated to bring the nut-receiving pockets into alinement with the plunger-carried'jaws rlhe gage-finger by entering said bore to center the pockets 49 with res ect to the plunger-carried jaws, so that said plhnger-carried jaws may enter the pockets acourately to exert pressure against the nuts previously deposited in the pockets.
The operation of my niiachine is as follows: The power-shaft 6 being put into motion,
'power is communicated therefrom-'through the crank-wheel 8 and pitman 1() to they segment 17 to rotate the rock-shaft 16 and impart reciproeation .to the carriage 11, due to.
the operation oi' the crank-arm 13 in the bedpocket 1. As the segment 17 oscillates it imparts rotation to the rock-shaft 21 through its intermeshing engagement with the pinion 22 thereon and the trip-Wheels 23 are thereby rotated. At these-me time that the parts mentioned are actuated in the mannerpstated rotation is imparted. to the j auw-carrying head 48 through the medium ofthe eccentric 35, carried by the power-shaft, the band 36 operating thereon and the ptman 37 having driving engagement with the shaft 43, that carries the jaw-carrying head 48, through the .medium of the crank-arm 45, pawl 47, and -ratchet-wheel 46.
The nuts to be cracked are introduced into the pockets 49 of thejawcarrying head, and as said head is rotated the pockets-are in turn brought into alinement with the plunger-carried jaws 3l, at which time the ejector in each advanced jaw 5() is in receded position. In a nut-cracking machine, the combination of a reciprocatory carriage, a jaw, a plunger arranged to reciprocate on said carriage and. provided with 'a jaw, a springpressed retaining-pin carried by said carriage and arranged in engagement with sai d plun` ger to hold it against reciprocation relatively to the carriage, and means'for imparting for# ward thrust to s'aid plunger toward said firstnamed jaw; said means comprising a dogpivoted to the plunger and a rocking trip member carried by the carriage, substantially as set forth. 4

In a nut-cracking machine, the combination of a jaw, a reciprocatory carriage, a reciprocatory plunger mountedin said carriage,a trippable member carried by said plunger, a trip member carried by said carriage ior engagement with said trippable member, means for drivimgr said trip member, a stop seated in said plunger, and a fixed support withwhich said stop engages to hold said plunger and cause separation of said trippable member and said trip member upon reciprocation of said carriage.
9. In a nut-cracking machine, the combination of a rotatableI head, means for rotating said head, a series of jaws carried by said head, a reciprocatory ejector in each of said jaws, reciprocatory means provided with jaws opposing said head, means for reciproeating said jaw-carrying means, and an ejector mounted in each of said last-named jaws and held from reciprocation therewith.
