To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ORSON BUOKLIN, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Marietta,
in the county of Lao qui Parle and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful End-Gate and Lifting-Jack, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a combined endgate and lifting-jack.
The objectsof the invention are to improve and simplify the construction of end-gate and lifting-jack disclosed in my United States Patent No. 821,458, dated May 22, 1906.
l/Vith the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of the following claims without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a per spective view of an end-gate and lifting-jack in position upon the body of a vehicle. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the device in position to be used as a lifting-jack. Fig. 3 is a hori- Zontal longitudinal section through the device. Fig. 1 is a transverse section through the lever or long end of the end-gate adjacent the swinging bolt. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the foot. Fig. 6 is a vertical section through the guide member. Fig. 7 is a transverse section through the lifting-bar adjacent the guide member.
Like reference characters indicate corresponding parts in the difierent figures of the drawings.
The improved endgate of this invention comprises a short end-gate section A, which I shall term a base, and a long end-gate section B, which I shall term a lever. The base A and lever B are suitably hinged to gether, as indicated at 1. The base A is provided on the side thereof which contains the hinge 1 with a transversely-extending cleat 2, which serves to prevent warping of the base and also to strengthen the construction thereof. On the side thereof opposite the cleat 2 and hinge 1 the base A is provided with a frame 3, which is approximately triangular in shape and is formed of a strip of metal which is provided intermediate its ends with an integral laterally-extending flange 4, that rests against the base A and is suitably secured the1 eto-as, for example, by means of the rivets 5. The upper or free ends 6 of the triangular frame 3 are bent into parallelism with each other, as shown.
A guide member 10 is suitably mounted between the parallel ends 6 of the frame 3. The guide member 10 preferably is rectangular in shape and is formed ofa single piece of material. Extending outward from the op posite sides of the guide member 10 is a pair of rivets 11, which are suitably upset upon the outer side of the parallel ends 6 of the frame 3. The guide member 10 is provided on its opposite sides with a pair of shoulders 12, which fit against the adjacent edges of the parallel ends 6 and serve to prevent any accidental rotation or swinging movement of the guide member 10 upon the rivets or securing devices 11. The guide member 10 is formed with a vertical passage 13, having at each end thereof an upper inclined face 14. and an oppositely-extending lower inclined face 15. It will be observed that the upper inclined face 14 at each end of the vertical passage 13 is parallel with the lower inclined face 15 at the opposite end of said passage.
Slidably extending through the guide member 10 is a lifting-bar 20, which preferably is formed along its rear edge with a plurality of notches or teeth 21 and in its front edge with a single notch 22. At its lower end the lifting-bar is pivotally connected with a supporting member 25, as indicated at 26. The supporting member 25 preferably comprises an integral shcet1netal body portion having lateral flanges suitably secured to the lever B and an upstanding {in with which the lifting-bar 20' is connected.
- The supporting member 25 extends beyond the end of the lever B, so that when the members A and B are in alinement with each other the supporting member 25 will overlap the end of the member A. Slidably mounted upon the lifting-bar 20 is a foot 30, comprising a flat body portion having a transverse lip 31 at one end and a pair of side flanges 32, which extend beyond the ends of the body portion to form a bifurcated por tion, through which extends the lifting-bar 20. The foot is held upon the lifting-bar 20 by means of a transverse pin 33, which connects the extended ends of the side flanges 32, as shown, and is adapted to engage one or the other of the teeth 21 in the rear edge of the lifting-bar 20. The single notch 22 in the front edge of the lifting-bar 2 is disposed close to the supporting member 25, so that when the transverse lip 31 is fitted into said notch the extended ends of the side flanges 32 will bear against the supporting member and will thereby produce a locking action which will serve to hold the lip 31 securely in the notch 22 when the two endgate members A and B are in alinement with each other, so that the frame 3 extends along the lever or long member B. In order to provide means for preventing the rattle of the foot 30 upon the lifting-bar 20, the side flanges 32 of said foot are provided with internal ribs 34, the adjacent faces of which are convergent with respect to each other, so as to form an approximately V-shaped structure. When the foot 30 is folded into longitudinal position against the lifting-bar 20, the internal ribs 34 will be wedged securely against the opposite sides of said bar 20 and will thus constitute means to prevent the rattle, as before stated.
The frame 3 is preferably locked against the lever B by means of a swinging bolt 40, having its rear end bent laterally at a right angle, as indicated at 41, and. seated in a re cess 42 in the member B, having at one end thereof an aperture to receive the shank of the bolt 40. The laterally-bent end 41 of the swinging bolt 40 is held within the recess 42 by means of a cleat 43, extending transversely across the member B, a similar cleat 44 being provided on said member adjacent the hinge 1. By forming the swinging bolt 40 with a laterally-bent end 41 and by holding the same in the recess 42 by means of the cleat 43 the construction is greatly simplified and the expense of manufacture reduced. Furthermore, any tendency of the bolt 40 to rotate in the recess 42 is prevented by the lateral end 41. At its forward end the bolt 40 is provided with a threaded handle 45. It will be understood that when the members A and B are in alinement with each other the swinging bolt 40 is moved in between the parallel ends 6 of the frame 3 and the handle 45 is turned to lock the frame in position upon the member B.
From the foregoing description it will be understood that when it is desired to use the device as a lifting-jack the base A is placed upon the ground, so that the frame 3 and lifting-bar 20 extend upwardly. The foot 30 is then adjusted upon the lifting-bar 20 until it fits properly beneath the axle or other member to be lifted, after which the lever B is pushed down, so. as to raise the lifting-bar and hold it in raised position. The upper and lower inclined faces 14 and 15 of the guide member 10 serve to guide the lifting-bar 20 in its movements and to hold it properly in adjusted position.
The improved device of this invention is strong, simple, durable, and inexpensive in the cleat 44, as shown in Fig. 3, serves to receive the strain of the hinge 1, and thus serves as a truss to strengthen the connection between the two end -gate sections. When the foot 30 is folded, as shown in Fig. 3, thetransverse pin 33 of the foot 30 preferably fits into a deep notch 33 in the end of-the lifting-bar 20, whereby to cooperate withthe lip 22 in looking the foot securely in position upon the lifting-bar.

A combined end-gate and lifting-jack comprising a base, a frame rigidly connected with said base and consisting of an approximately triangular metallic strip having its upper ends bent in parallelism, an integral guide member secured between the parallel ends of said frame and having bearing-shoulders fitted against the edges of said frame,"
said guide member also having a vertical passage formed at each end thereof with upper and lower inclined faces, a lever hinged upon said base, and a lifting-bar pivotally connected with said lever and extending through the vertical passage of said guide member.

A combined end-gate and lifting-jack comprising a base, a frame rigidly connected with one side of said base, a lever hinged to the other side of said base, a lifting-bar pivotally connected with said lever, a guide member on the upper end of said frame for engaging said lifting-bar, a foot carried by the bar and foldable against the same, and means for preventing the rattle of said foot.

A combined end-gate and lifting-jack comprising a base, a frame rigidly connected with one side of said base, a lever hinged to the other side of said base, a lifting-bar pivotally connected with said lever, a guide member on the upper end of said frame for engaging said liftmg-bar, a foot carried by the bar and foldable against the same, and converging ribs upon said foot adapted to wedge against the opposite sides of the lift ing-bar to prevent rattle of the foot.
7. A combined end-gate and lifting-jack comprising a base, a frame connected with said base, a guide member carried by said frame, a lever connected withsaid base, a supporting member carried by said lever, a lifting-bar pivotally connected with said supporting member and having a notch in its forward edge, and a foot slidably mounted upon said bar and having a transverse lip adapted to fit into said notch, said notch being disposed sufficiently close to said supporting member to cause the foot to contact therewith when the transverse lip is engaged with the notch, whereby to produce a looking action on the foot.
8. A combined end-gate and lifting-jack comprising a base, an approximately triangular frame rigidly connected with said base and having its upper ends bent into parallelism with each other, a guide member carried by said parallel upper ends, a lever connected with said base, a lifting-bar connected with said lever and extending through said guide member, a swinging bolt having a laterallybent end disposed in a recess of said lever, a cleat for holding the laterally-bent end of said bolt in place, and a threaded handle upon said swinging bolt for locking the said frame against said lever.
