Be it known that I, PATRICK H. Rmnnox, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pressure-Regulators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
his invention relates to pressure-regulators for air-compressors and the like.
It has for its object a simple, cheap, and ellicient device for maintaining the pressure in the. receiver of an air-compressor at a predetermined amount and that when the pressure in the receiver exceeds that desired the compressing of air will temporarily be suspended. In devices heretofore employed for. this purpose dilliculty has been experienced in that when the pressure of the receiver has fallen below the desired amount and the compressor resumes compressing air a sudden and harmful jar is experienced upon the whole device, and especially upon the motor. This is owing to the motor immediatelyencountering the full pressure or resistanceof the/receiver. This shock or jar is emphasized by the fact that in all this character of devices, termed in the trade unloading devices, the work .of the motor during its unloading period is reduced to a minimum, with the consequence that power is supplied during this time only in proportion to the load. It thus comes about that when the work of compressing air starts in and the motor has to encounter its full load it is compelled to slow down, and not infrequently it 1s stopped by the great accession of Work thrown upon it thus suddenly.
A further object of the invention is to pro vide in this type of apparatus such a const ruction as will avoic the difliculty describedthat is to say, to provide an a aratus so arranged that the load Will be picked up radually.
T hese objects are accomplished by means of the devices illustrated in the accorn anying drawing, which is a sectional elevation of the device shown in position attached to an air-compressor cylinder, which is partly in section to more clearly illustrate the invention.

16 is an air-discharge pipe connecting both end outlets of cylinder 1 by a bifurcation and continuing to the receiver. In the pipe 16 is provided a suitable check-valve 17, located, preferably, at some distance from the cylinder. A small pipe 18, connecting, the bore of the regulator-valve, enters the dischargepipe 16 at a POIIIhllOtWOOIl the valve 17 arid the receiver. The plug-valve Q'is provided with a loading device, shown in the present instance asa yoke 19, sup lied with weights 20. The plug-valve 9 is Foaded so as to be raised by the desired receiveepressure.
When the device is in operation, the following conditions normally exist: From the pipe 16 receiver-pressure is conveyed through passage 13, passage 10, and pipes 7 and 7 to the outer ends of the valves 3. When the de sired pressure in the receiver isiexceeded, it overcomes the Weight 20 and raises the plugvalve 9 till the transverse opening'of passage 14 engages with the upper opening of assage 10, closing by the same movement t 1e connection of passage 10 with the receiver. This liberates the pressure on the outer ends of valves 3, so that by the pressure in pipe 16 beneath the check valve 17 each valve is forced outward againstthe seats 6. There is thus provided a free passagei'rom one side of piston 2 to theother around the bifurcation of pipe 16, so that all work of compressing ceases, and the pressure of the receiver is on both sides of the piston. As the valve 17 prevents any" accession of pressure from the receiver back to the cylinder, the pressure in the cylinder quickly diminishes, owing to unavoidable leaks around the piston-rod and elsewhere, so that in one or two strokes there is practically no pressure in the pipe 16 between the check-valve 17 and the cylinder. When the pressure in the receiver fails sufliciently to permit the plug 9 to drop to the position shown in sume'their normal working position and compressing commences, but not against the ressure of the receiver. Several strokes of the compressor-piston are necessary to the bifurcation of pipe 16 with air at receiverpressure. Thus the engine or other motor has several turns inwhich to gradually take up the load, which it consequently does Without shock or jar.
It is obvious that many changes both in the form and location of this device can be made to suit special requirements without departing from the essential character of my invention. 1 therefore do not desire to be confined to the particular form, location, or arrangements of the parts herein illustrated.
What I claim is- 1. A pressure-regulator for air-compress ors and the like comprising an outlet-valve to the compressor-cylimler, a controlling device operated by pressure from the receiver to control the movement of said valve and a discharge-pipe from the cylinder to the receiver provided with a check-valve.
2. A pressure-regulator for reciprocatingiston air-compressors and the like comprismg outlet-valves to the compressor-cylinder on each side of the piston, a controlling device operated by pressure from the receiver the drawing, the valves 3 reto control the movement of said valves and a discharge-pipe from the cylinder to the receiver provided with a check-valve. l 3. A pressure-regulator forreciprocatingl piston air-compressors and the like comprise l ing outlet-valves to the compressor-cylinder on each side of the piston, a bifurcated discharge-pipe connecting both ends of the cyll, inder at the outlet-valves with the receiver, a controlling device operated by pressure from the receiver to control the movement of the outlet-valves, the discharge-pipe being provided with a check-valve between the bifurcation and the receiver.
'4. A pressure-regulator for reciprocatingpiston air-compressors and the like comprising outlet-valves to the colnpressor-cylinder on each side of the piston, a bifurcated discharge-pipe connecting both ends of the cylinder at the outlet-valves with the receiver, a controlling device operated by pressure from the receiver to controlthe movement of said valves, said controlling a valve movable by the pressure in the receiver and -means for controlling the movement-thereof, pipes or passages connecting said outlet-valves with the receiver and with the atmosphere, suitably arranged whereby through the movement of the valve of the l controlling device, receiver and atmospheric pressure are conducted to the outlet-valve whereby the movement of the last-mentioned valve. is controlled and a check-valve in the discharge-pipe intermediate of the bifurcation and the receiver.
