FLEXIBLE HAND.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FLEXIBLE HAND.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 18, 1906.
Application filed January 29, 1906- Serial No. 298,342.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE DOEBRIOH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Flexible Hand, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and flexible hand or foot; and it consists in forming a frame with means for attachment to a wax or other figure or object and having wires connected with said frame corresponding to the number of fingers or toes and a covering formed of material such as is described and claimed in my Letters Patent No. 551,530, granted December 17, 1895.
It further consists of other novel details of construction, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
Figure 1 re resents a perspective viewof the parts in etached position. Fig. 2 represents a sectional view of a finished hand. EfFig. 3 represents a sectional view of a finished oot.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a frame formed of metal and consisting of the sections 2 and 3, the said frame being suitably shaped or formed to correspond to a hand or foot and said sections being adapted to be soldered or otherwise rigidly secured together.
4 designates a thimble having an opening therethrough, the walls of which are threaded and are adapted for engagement with a threaded extension of a doll or other article to which the hand or foot is adapted to be secured. The thimble is soldered or otherwise secured between the plates at the proper end of the same and is provided with a suitable flange 5 therefor, the proper edges of the sections 2 and 3 being bent, as shown in Fig. 2, to properly engage the thimble.
6 designates grooves or recesses formed in the face of one of the sections, in which are seated the wires or other suitable material 7, which correspond in number to the fingers or toes, as may be desired, it being seen that the said wires are suitably secured in the grooves by solder or otherwise and that in the present instance the means for securing the sections 2 and 3 together hold the thimble and wires in place. Around the entire frame and wire I cast the material 8, such as I have before stated was described in Letters Patent No.
551,530, the parts being thus suitably incased in material and the resulting article producing a flexible hand or foot the fingers or toes of which can be bent into any desired position and will retain the same.
I have found in practice that it is necessary to provide a quick and easy means for securing the hands or feet to a wax figure, &c. and one which will permit removal of the same for repairs, and I have further found that by the use of my thimble the same can be removed, if necessary, and be replaced by another, or where injury has been done to the hand a new one can be placed upon a thimble, if desired- I have further foundthat by reason of the construction of the frame injury thereto is less likely, owing to the lightness of construction and to the fact that dampness will not affect the same, as in the use of other materials.
In the drawings I have shown my invention as applied to a hand, although, as stated, it will be evident that the same construction can be employed for the manufacture of feet.
It will be evident that various changes may be made by those skilled in the art which will come within the scope of my invention, and I do not, therefore, desire to be limited in every instance to the exact con struction herein shown and described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device of the character described, a frame formed of two sections, a thimble, having a threaded bore, wires extending from said frame, means for securing the sections, thimble and wires in suitable relation and a covering for said frame and wires.
2. In a device of the character described, a frame formed of two sections, a thimble having a threaded bore, wires extending from said frame and means for securing the sections, thimble and wires in suitable relation.
3. In a device of the character described, a frame formed of sections, depressions in one section, wires adapted to be seated in said depressions, a thimble having a threaded bore, means for securing said sections, thimble and Wires in fixed relation to each other and a covering for said frame and wires.
GEORGE DOEBRICH.
