Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ROBERT L. JEWETT, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Ogden, in the county of Weber and State of Utah, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hydrocarbon- Burners, of which the following is such a full, clear, and exact description as will enable others skilled inthe art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
This'in'vention relates to improvements in hydrocarbon-burners for illuminating purposes, and has for its object the provision of a simple and inexpensive burner which shall be free from carbonization.
With this object in view the invention consists in certain novel features, which will be hereinafter first fully described and then park ticularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which fully illustrate the invention, Figure 1 is an elevation of a burner embodying the improvements. Fig. 2 is a planview of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section through the burner-tips, the mixing-chamber, and their connections. ,Fig. 4 is a horizontal section on the line as a; of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the superheater, and Fig. 6 is a sectional view taken on the line y y of Fig. 5.
Referring to the drawings particularly by letter, A designates a base-plate, upon which is centrally secured a dome B, having a suspending-rod C rising from its upper end, by which the device may be hung upon any convenient fixed support. The dome opens its lower end through the base-plate. Passing through and secured to the base-plate is a tube D, having a horizontal arm E below the base-plate, the said horizontal arm carrying one or more burner-tips F, as shown. These burner-tips are provided with internal horizontal partitions G, ofgauze or perforated material, which extend partly across the bore of the tip from the opposite walls of the same, whereby the vapor is caused to pass to the tip through a tortuous passage, so that it will be retarded and the usual noisy blowing pIrevented. Below the burner-tips a valve is provided in the arm E to facilitate drainage of sediment and oil. On the upper end of the tube D is an air-chamber I, having openings or ports in its upper end for the admission of air. Within this air-chamber are a number of horizontal plates or partitions J, which extend partly across the chamber from its opposite walls and are connected by vertical screens K, whereby the air entering and passing through said chamber will be caused to travel a circuitous passage, and
consequently will be prevented from rushing too rapidly to the mixingchamber. The screens also serve to filter the air by arresting the particles of dust therein, so that impurities will not pass to the burner-tips. Below the partitions J a vaporizing-tube L enters the air-chamber or the tube D and discharges oil or vapor into the said tube D, where it mixes with the air, the said tube D therefore constituting the mixing-chamber. The vaporizing-tube passes across the bore of the tube D and is provided with a port in its lower side, so that the air and vapor are mixed below the said tube and the holding of the vapor in the tube L by the air is prevented. Within the mixing chamber or tube D is arranged a double-conical sleeve M, which serves to retard the flow of the vapor and air, so as to prevent the rapid flow of the same to the burner-tips and cause a thorough commingling thereof before arriving at the point of combustion. Between the retarding-sleeve M and the burner-tips I arrange one or more perforated screens or partitions N, extending across the path of the mixed air and vapor to prevent back firing. The vaporizing-tube L passes through the dome B directly over the burner-tips, so that the heat rising from the tips will serve to raise the temperature of the tube and vaporize the oil flowing therethrough.
The oil is supplied to the tube L from a preheater consisting of a coil arranged in asbestos packing and located above the burner-tips and within range of the heat rising therefrom, one end of the coil being When it is desired to use the device, the
flow of oil is permitted by opening the valve at the reservoir or supply-tank, and an initial flame is created between the burner-tips by means of a torch, an alcohol-cup, or other convenient device.
The initial flame will raise the temperature of the vaporizing-tube so that the preheated oil therein will be converted into vapor. This vapor will escape into the mixing-tube D, where it will mingle with air from the chamber I, the mingled air and vapor passing to the burner-tip, where it will be ignited and consumed. The heat generated by the combustion at the burner-tips will rise through the dome or chimney and escape, but in its passage therethrough will play 11 on the vaporizing-tube, so as to maintain t e necessary high temperature of the same. In its passage to the burner-tips the mingled air and vapor will be carried through the retarding-tube M, where it will be subjected to increased pressure and thoroughly mixed, so that the gas which reaches the burner-tips will be in proper condition for immediate perfect combustion.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The improved hydrocarbon-burner herein described and shown comprising a baseplate, a dome on the upper side thereof provided with suspending means, an air-chamber supported by the base-plate, a mixingchamber depending therefrom and provided with burner-tips below the base-plate in alinement with the dome, a preheater secured on the under side of the base-plate and connected with an oil-supply, a vaporizingtube above the base-plate connected with the preheater, passing through the dome and entering the mixing-chamber below the airchamber, and a retarding-tube within the mixing-chamber below the end of the vaporizing-tube.
2. A hydrocarbon-burner having an airchamber provided with horizontal partitions extending partly across the same from the opposite walls thereof and vertical screens supported by said partitions.
