I forming the wing-carrying UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
COTTON SCRAPER AND CULTIVATOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 18, 1906.
Application filed April 24;,1906. Serial No. 313.419-
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EBER WORTHINGTON DEVENEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Augusta, in the county of Richmond and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cotton Scrapers and Cultivators, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in scrapers and cultivators which are used espe cially for the cultivation of cotton and are provided with a head that supports the scraping-wings, said head consisting generally of two separable parts either one of which can be used independently of the other to permit the cultivator-point to stir the ground close to the roots of the growing plants without danger of injuring the portions thereof projecting above the ground; and the object of my improvement is to materially add to the rigidity of connections between the wings and the head, although reducing the number of bolts used for that purpose. I attain this object by the construc tion illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in WlliCll- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cottonscraper constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same removed from the beam. Fig. 3 is a front view of one of the wings. Fig. 4 1s a perspective view, on a slightly larger scale, of the rear one of the two parts head. Fig. 5 is a perspective v1ew of the front one of the two parts forming the wing-carrying head.
In said drawings, A represents an ordinary plow-beam provided with handles B and a standard C, constructed, preferably, of a single bar of wrought-iron bent in the middle of its beam. The standard is braced to the beam by a bar D, having its lower end secured to the standard and its upper end to the under side of the beam. To the front of the standard is secured an ordinary cultivator-point E by means of the bolt F. Secured to the rear of the standard C by the same bolt is a head formed of the rear half G and of the front half G of cast or wrought iron, having their outer ends cut diagonally. Each half of said head is provided with a perforation g, preferably square,.to receive a small bolt h to secure thereto one of the wings or blades 1, and on two of the sides of the perforation 9 there is a square lug m, projecting from the front face of the parts G and G length and having its ends secured to theof the head to relieve the bolt h from strain and to steady the blade in position and prevent any rocking of said blade upon the bolt h, passing through the perforation l in the blade. Said blade has a square perforation n on two of the sides of the perforation Zto receive the square lugs m, projecting from the face of the parts G and G of the head. The blades 1 have their upper and lower edges straight and parallel and the ends cut off diagonally. Their lower edge is sufficiently sharp to cut any grass and weeds which may be growing between the rows of plants.
The advantages obtained by making the wing-supported head in two halves are that it permits either half and wing to be used singly inbarring off the roots of cotton and corn.
To prevent either the half-head G or G from turning upon the bolt F when only one of the halves is used at a time, each one is provided with a shoulder g to abut against the side of the standard, and centrally between this shoulder and the end of the head is a perforation g to receive the bolt F, and a nut f upon the end of said bolt will secure either one of the halves G or G or both of them, together against the rear of the standard. 7
Having I claim,
1. A cotton-scraper consisting of a plowbeam and handles, a standard, a cultivatorpoint in front of said standard, a head formed of two parts G and G each ofsaid parts of the head provided with two lugs projecting from its face and a perforation between said lugs, and blades therefor, each blade having three perforations alongside of the upper edge to receive the lugs of the head and a bolt between them, substantially as described.
2. In a cotton-scraper the combination of the two divergent blades, each one provided with three perforations alongside ,of its upper edge, with the head consisting of the parts and G each of said parts provided with two square lugs projecting from its face, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
