At its upper end the chamber 2v is closed, save for a central opening 3, adapted to receive the operating-stem of the cock,v and at its lower end the chamber is provided in its walls with screw-threads 4, adapted lto be engaged by corresponding screw-threads upon a closure 5, which closure has an annular flange 6, adapted to make a tightjoint with the lower edge of the casing 1. stuffing-box 8, formed integral with the casing 1, surrounds the opening 3 in the upper portion of said casing, and this stuffing-box isy exteriorly screw-threaded to receive the gland 9. A packing-ring 10, of usual form, is adaptedto lie within said gland, and in this instance,` as the packing has been omitted and a rubber washer 1 1 shown in its place, the packing-ring has been reversed. As will be understood, the ring is placed in its normal position when ordinary packing is used in the stuffing-box.
At its opposite sides the casing 1 is provided with an inlet-opening 12 and an outletopening 13, screw-threaded for receiving pipe connections and communicating with the central chamber 2 by means of openings V14 and 15, respectively. A duct 16, communieating between the opening 14 and the upper part of the chamber 2, permits fluid to pass above the valve-plug, to be hereinafter described, anda similar duct 17 communicates between said opening 14 and the lower part of the chamber 2. i
A taper valve-plug 18 is adapted to lie within the chamber 2, its integral stem 19 extending upwardly through the opening 3. This opening is closed and the passage of fluid through it prevented by a ground joint, which joint is formed by an annular seatingshoulder 20 on the plug 18, adapted to be seated against the upper closed end of the chamber 2, tightly closing the opening 3 and leaving a small space 21 above the plug. The plug 19 is hollow and on opposite sides is provided with the longitudinal flutes or grooves 22 'of a sufficient depth to pass through the walls of said plug, forming' the opening23, extending diametrically through the plug. The exposed area of the lower end of the plug being considerably larger than that of the upper end, the pressure fluid entering the space 24 exerts an upward pressure upon said plug somewhat in excess of the downward pressure exerted by said fluid within the space 21, raising said plug, seating it firmly within the chamber 2, and holding the seating-shoulder 2() tightly in contact with the upper wall of said chamber, thus preventing any leakage either through the sediment.

While the plug is free to move longitudinally to take up wear upon the plug, the seating-shoulder 20, and their respective seats said seating-shoulder keeps the plug from being jammed into its seat and sticking by reason of heavy pressure within the valve. As will be seen, the spaces 21 and 24 are at all times in communication with the inlet, thus preventing leakage.
The plug 19 is rotated to open or close the valve in the usual manner. Fluid entering the casing 1 through the inlet-opening 12 passes through the opening 14, the ducts 16 and 17, and the flute 22 into the spaces 2l and 24 above and below said lug. When the cock is open, the iiute 22 wit iin the opposite side of said plug leads from the openings 21 and 24 to the discharge-opening 13, thus permitting of a current of fluid through the spaces 21 and 24, tending to clear them of Should the pressure within the opening 12 be removed and the plug fall by its own weight against the closure 4, said plug will be raised to its normal position, when the pressure within the opening 12 is restored.
In the form of valve shown in Figs. 3 and 4 the casing 25 is provided with a central truncated conical chamber 26 similar to the chamber 2, which chamber 26 has four openings-namely, an inlet-opening 27, an outlet-'opening 28, and openings 29 and 30-for connecting the cock with the op osite ends of a pressure-cylinder. (Not s own.) In this form of cock the plug 31, made taperin as hereinbefore described, is provided wit two curved passages 32 and 33, extending therethrough, which passages are arranged to place the opposite ends of the pressurecylinder in communication with the inletopening 27 and the outlet-opening 28 alternately in the o eration of the cock. The casing 25 and p ug 31 are constructed, as in the cock iirst described herein, to rovide s aces in the casing above andv be ow the E ug. A groove 34 in the wall of the chamer 26 places the space beneath the plug 31 in constant communication with the inletopening 27, and a similar groove 35 serves to connect the inlet-opening with the space above said plug. The plug is provided with a seating-shoulder at its upper end, as in the two-way valve.
A considerable portion of the plug 31 being cut awayby the openings 32 and 33 I have strengthened the walls of said plug by forming therein the integral transverse pin 36.
The rotation of the plug 31 places the opposite ends of the pressure-cylinder alternately in communication With the inlet and the outlet. As in the form of cock first shown, the pressure iiuid holds the plug 32 tightly seated within its chamber 26, with its seating-shoulder pressed tightly against the particular constructions herein illustrated and described. n
I claim as my invention- 1. In a cock, in combination, a casing having an inlet, an outlet, and a conical valvechamber intermediate said inlet and said outlet; and a rotatable conical valve-plug in said chamber, a spacebeing provided in said casing at each end of said plug, and said plug being fluted upon its opposite sides to connect said spaces with said inlet and said outlet.

In a cock, in combination, a casing having an inlet, an outlet, and a conical chamber intermediate said inlet and said outlet; and a rotatable valve-plug adapted to connect said inlet and said outlet, which plug is adapted to contact closely with the conical Walls of said chamber, said casing having a passageway therein for leading pressure fluid from said inlet to the rear of said plug, said plug having a passage-way therein for permitting the flow of fluid from the rear of said plug to said outlet.
3. In a cock, in combination, a casing havingan inlet, an outlet, and a conical chamber intemediate said inlet and said outlet; a rotatable tapered plug in said chamber adapted to connect said inlet and said outlet, which plug is adapted to contact closely with the conical walls of said chamber; and a seatingshoulder on the smaller end of said plug adapted to contact vith one end wall of said chamber and provide a space between said' plug and said end wall, said casing having a IOO passage way therein for .connecting said space with said inlet, and said plug having a passage-way therein for connecting said space with the outlet, said casing and plug also having passage-ways therein for introducing pressure iuid between the larger end ofvsaid plug and the adjacent end wall of said chamber and for permitting the flow of fluid therefrom.
