SCRAPEFI.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 18, 1906,
Application filed 11111018, 1906. Serial No. 322.230.
T0 ztZZ 1077,0711, it nary concern:
Beit known that I, ANSON B. MUNsoN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Stockton, in the county of-San Joaquin and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scrapers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable, others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in scrapers; and my object is to produce a scraper which may be operated by steam or other power and one which Will do the work for which it is designed quickly and efficiently and by means of which more work can be accomplished in a shorter space of time than can now be done with the commonly-used scrapers, the same being particularly adapted to grading-work on levees, roads, Sac. These objects I accomplish by a power-propelled scraper provided with various regulating devices, as will appear fully by a perusal of the following specification and claims.
In the drawings similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved scraper. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig.3 is a sectional view taken on a line a a; of Fig. 2.
1 designates the frame of the machine, near the front end of which is a bearingwheel 2, and 3 is a scraper journaled about the center of said frame with circular diskbearings 4, said scraper being provided with shoes 4' on the front thereof, on which shoes the scraper rides when in its inverted position. On the front of the said frame 1 is suitably'journaled a brake-Wheel 5, provided with a band-brake 6, actuated by means of suitable lever mechanism 7 and 8. On the said shaft 5 is also secured a cable-drum 9, on which is a cable 10, leading to a suitable drum at the engine or other power. 11 is a pulley secured to the shaft 5 and having secured thereto a cable 12, running over a pulley 13, secured to a frame 14 and secured at the other end to the rear of the bowl of the said scraper 3.
15 represents upright frames across the top of which is journaled a shaft 16, on which are journaled rollers 17 at each end thereof. Coiled around said rollers 17 are cables 18, saidcables being secured to the scraper at the front and rear thereof near the bottom thereof.
19 is a worm-gear casing within which is a worm-gear adapted to actuate the shaft 16 by means of a wheel 20.
21 represents clutch members adapted to coact with the rollers 17, and said clutch members are actuated by means of a lever mechanism 22 and 23.
Secured to the frame 14 are a set of vertical rollers 24 and directly back of them a set of cable-sheaves 25, as shown.
26 is a cable leading from the motive power over any suitable idler, through the roller 24 and sheaves 25, under a sheave 27 near the rear of the machine, out over a tail-:
block 28, set stationary at any desired distance from the machine, and thence to a fastening 29 at the rear of the machine.
When it is desired to scrape with the machine, the brake 6 is set, which prevents the roller 9 from rotating. The power is then applied to the cable 10, which draws the ma chine forward, and the scraper 3 performs its functions. the position of the said scraper so as to regulate the amount of the work it will do, the clutch mechanism is thrown into the rollers 17 by means of the lever mechanism 22 and 23, and the worm-ear is operated by means of the wheel 20, which causes the cables 18 to raise or lower the front or rear of the scraper, as is desired. When the scraper is ready to be dumped, the clutch mechanism is thrown out of connection with the rollers 17 and the brake 6 is released, and this permits the cable 10 to rotate the shaft 5, which causes the pulley 11 to rotate and wind up the cable 12, which action pulls on the scraper 3 and dumps the same, as is apparent. The dirt being emptied and the machine again ready for use, the power is applied to the cable 26, which action reverses the movement of the machine and draws it to any desired position ready for scraping, the scraper riding on the shoes 4 until allowed to resume its position for scraping.
I have now entered into a detailed descrip tion of the present and preferred embodiment of my invention, although many small changes in the detail of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention.
WVhen it is desired to regulate IIO Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a scraper, a scraper proper, journaled in a suitable frame, means for drawing the same forward and backward with stationary power, means for raising or lowering the said scraper at the front and rear as desired, means for dumping the said scraper, with said stationary power at any desired point, and running shoes on the front end of said scraper, as set forth.
2. In a scraper a frame, a scraper carried by said frame, a shaft journaled near the front of said frame, a cable-drum on said shaft, a cable-pulley on said shaft, a cable connected to said cable-pulley and running over a suitable sheave and connected to the rear of the bowl of the said scraper, a cable on said cable-drum, and means for applying power to said last-named cable, and means for locking and releasing the rotation of the said shaft, as set forth.
3. In a scraper a frame, a scraper carried by said frame, a shaft journaled near the a front of said frame, a cable-drum secured thereto, a cable secured to said cable-drum and leading to any suitable power, acable pulley secured to said shaft and provided with a cable secured thereto and running over a suitable cable-sheave and thence to the rear of the bowl of the said scraper, a wheel secured to said shaft, a band-brake thereon, and means for operating said band-brake, as set forth.
4. In a scraper a'frame, a scraper carried by said frame, means for propelling said scraper, means for dumping said scraper, vertical frames secured to said first-named frame, a shaft mounted on said Vertical frames, rollers mounted on said shaft at each end thereof, cables encircling said rollers and secured to the lower ends of the said scraper at the front and rear thereof, a worm-gear adapted to rotate said shaft, and a clutch mechanism secured to said shaft adapted to be engaged or disengaged with said rollers, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
