Be it known that I, TERRY STAFFORD, a citizen of the United States, residing at T0- peka, in the county of Shawnee and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Transmission-Gearing, of which the following is a specification.
My invention pertains to transmissiongears, such as employed in motor-vehicles, and more particularly to means for controlling the -same; and it has for one of its objects to provide means whereby with one mo- .device-such, for instance, as a levert e clutch'ofjatransmission-gear maybe opened, the gears shifted into mesh wherever desired, andthe clutch closed to connect the motor to the driving wheel or wheels.
Another object of the invention is the provision of auxiliary means for performing the single operation of opening or releasing the clutch when it is desirable so to do.

The saidslide N is connected with the slide L through the medium of a bolt e, disposed and movable in the slot (1., and it is provided in its upper edge with notches f f and g g, the walls of which are inclined, as shown, and is also provided intermediate the said notches with neutral points h. It will be gathered from the foregoing that the multi le-disk clutch being-slow to take hold will a low shifting of the gear F in'either direction with'impunity, and it will also be apparent that the gears are necessarily in demands, shown in Fig. 1.) The said cam-lever is fulthereby o%en solute mesh before the clutch can be closed, which precludes stripping of the gears by a plying power when the gears are only part y mtermeshed. This will be better appreciated when it is remembered that the slide L, carrying the gear-shifting arm M, has to be exactly positioned before projection J on lever I can drop into a recess 6. It will further'be gathered from the regoing that my improvements are simple and well adapted to withstand the usage to team which motor-vehicle mechanism is ordinarily subjected and that the case A is dust and oil tight, and its lid m permits of access being :readily gained to the interior parts.
I I have entered into a detailed description of the construction and relative arrangement of the parts comprised in the present and pre.-'
ferred embodiment of my invention in order to impart a definite understanding of the said embodiment. I do not desire, however, to be understood as confining myself to the said specific construction and relative arrange ment of parts, as such changes or modifica tionsmay be made in practice as fairly fall within the scope of my invention as claimed.
' In Fig. 8 of the drawings I have illustrated swinging segments N and L, which are designed when desired to'be used in lieu of the slides N and L, respectively. These swinging segments N and L are notched and grooved like the slides and are designed to coo erate with the lever I in'the same manner as t esaid slides. In this connection I desire it understood that any means com atible with my invention may be employed or opening the clutch and moving the shifting gear onv one movement of an actuatingdevice without involving a departure from the scope of the said invention as claimed. I alsodesire it understood that while I prefer to employ a clutch of the multiple-disk type a cone or other form of clutch may be used without affecting my invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination with the clutch and I the shifting gear of a transmission-gear; of means for normally closing the clutch, a lever for opening the clutch, means for moving the said ever in one direction, and means for serving the twofold purpose of shifting the gear and controlling movement of the lever in the other direction.
2. The combination with the clutch and the shifting gear of a transmission-gear, and means for normally closing the clutch; of a lever for opening the clutch; said lever being rovided with a projection, means for moving the said lever in one direction, and a slide connected with and arranged to move the shifting gear and having one or more recesses arranged to register with the projection of the lever to permit movement of. the lever in the direction opposite to that stated.
3. The combination with the clutch and the shifting gear of a transmission-gear; of a lever for opening the clutch, means for mov-' ing the sai lever in one direction, and means for serving the twofold purpose of shifting the gear and controlling movement of the lever in the other direction.
4. The combination with the clutch and the shifting gear of a transmission-gear; of
means for opening the clutch, and means for Serving the twofold purpose of shifting the gear and holding the clutch open until after the gear is full shifted.
5. The combination with the clutch and the shifting gear of a transmission-gear, and
means for normally closing the clutch; of means'ioropening the clutch, and means for serving the twofold purpose of shifting the gear and holding the clutch open untilafter the gear is fully shifted.
6. The combination with the clutch and the shifting gear of a transmission-gear, and means for normally closing the clutch; of a lever for opening the clutch said lever being providedwith a projection, a slide provided with means for engaging the projection and moving the lever in one direction, anda slide connected with and arranged to move the shifting gear and having one or more recesses arranged to registerwith the projection of the lever to permit movement of the lever in the direction op osite to that stated; the second-mentione slide being also arranged tpdderive motion from the first-mentioned s 1 e.
7. The combination withthe. clutch and the shifting gear of a transmission-gear, and
means for normally closing the clutch; of a lever rovided with a rojection and connecte with and adapted to open the clutch, a slide having one or more notches arranged to engage the projection and swing the lever in one direction, and a slide connected with and arranged to move the shiitinggear and havingv one or more recesses arranged to register with the projection of the lever to permit movement of the'lever in the direction opposite to that stated; the second-mentioned slide being loosely'connected with the first-mentioned slide, whereby the secondmentioned slide will be moved by the firstmentioned slide subsequent to. the initial movement of the latter.
8. The combination with the clutch and the shifting gear of a transmission-gear, and means f r normally closing the clutch of a lever fo opening the clutch; said lever being provided with'projections, a camslev er arranged to engage one projection and thereby move the lever in one direction, and a slide connected with and arranged to move the shifting gear and having one or more recesses arranged to register with the other projection ofthe lever to permit movement of the lever in the direction opposite to that stated. 9. The combination with the clutch and the shifting gear of a transmission-gear, and
means for norm-ally closing the clutch; of a lever for opening the clutch; said lever being provided. with projections, a cam-lever arranged to engage one projection and thereby move the leverin one direction, a slide having one or more notches arranged to engage the other projection of the lever to swing the lever in the same direction, and a slide connected with and arranged to move the shifting gear and having one or more recesses arranged to register with the last-mentioned 10. The combination with the clutch and the shifting gear of a transmission-gear, and means for normally closing the clutch; of a lever for opening the clutch; said lever being rovided with a projection, means for movmg the said lever in one direction, and a device movable to and fro and connected with and arranged to move the shifting gear and having one or more recesses arranged to register with'the projection of the lever to permit movement of the lever in the direction opposite to that stated. v
11. The combination with the clutch and the shifting gear of the transmission-gear, and means for normally closing the clutch; of a lever provided with a rojection and connected with and adapted to open the clutch, a device movable to and fro and hav ing one or more notches arranged to enga e the projection and swing the lever in one irecticn, and a device movable to and fro and connected with and arranged to move the shifting gear and having one or more recesses arranged to register with theprojection of the lever to permit movement of the lever in the direction op osite to that stated; the second-mentione device being loosely connected with the 'first mentioned device whereby the second-mentioned device will be moved by the first-mentioned device subsequent to the initial movement of the latter.
