Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN A. BASSETT, OF SALEM, MASSACHUSETTS.
IM PROVEM ENT IN GAS-GENERATO RS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 83,026, dated October 13, 1868.
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN A. BAssETT, of Salem, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gas-Generators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full description of the same, reference being had to the drawing accompanying this specification, and making a part of the same.
This invention relates to that class of gasgenerators in which the mixed air and hydrocarbon vapor low down to the burners by the weight of the vapors. The vapors, being heavier than atmospheric air, pass down through the piping, carrying the air with sufficient pressure to produce a light at the burners. I have found it desirable to use for this purpose an apparatus in which the evolution of vapor should stop whenever the light is not wanted, and by means of an apparatus so constructed as to revolve by the pressure of the atmosphere upon the column of vapor this result is attained. The apparatus for this purpose may be an ordinary wet-meter wheel, or any arrangement by which the air is compelled to enter, successively, compartments of a revolving chamber, and by the revolution of the chamber the evaporation of the hydrocarbon is secured.
The meter-wheel B should be made ot very light material, and mounted on light, fine bearings, accurately adjusted, so that the friction may be reduced to a minimum and the wheel revolved with the least expenditure of power. Y
The air enters the apparatus through the inlet-pipe A, passing to the meter-wheel B through the chamber O and curved pipe D. rIhe hydrocarbon is introduced, through a suitable opening, into thechamber C, filling the case of the meter-wheel up to'the level shown.
The chamber C contains a series of perforated plates, which may be charged with any librous or capillary material saturated with the hydrocarbon, through which the air passes on its way to the meter-wheel. The outletpipe is shown at E.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
An apparatus for charging air with hydrocarbon vapor, automatically revolved by the weight of the column of vapor, and used in combination with the chamber O, substantially as set fart-h. l
