LOUIE J. HARRIS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
FUlVllGATlNG SYSTEM FOR SLEEPING-CARS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 28, 1906.
Application filed May 25, 1906. erial No. 318.760.
citizen of the United States of America, and
a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Fumigating System for Sleeping-Cars, of which the following is a specification, the same being a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to that class of cars patented by me on August 25, 1903, No. 737,403, whereby a car or coach is so constructed as to have the body between the trucks hung down, thus providing for berthstorage compartments beneath the floor consisting thereat of superimposed trapdoors, and in particular to such a car having flues or pipes running alongside of said compartments, thus allowing for airing and fumigating the beds or berths in said compartments when not in use, as during the day time; and it has for itsobject the provision of an apparatus of the kind set forth simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and which is also efficient in practical use.
To attain the desired end, this my invention consists in the construction, arrangement, and operation of parts herein set forth.
In order to enable the invention to be fully understood, I will proceed to explain the same by reference to the drawings, illustrative of one embodiment of the invention, and which accompany and form a part of the specification, and in which Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a car, partly in section. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the floor of the cars, and Fig. 4 is a view in detail of the valve.-
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in all the views.
In order to more conveniently carry out the sanitary features or purpose of this in vention, I have devised a perfectsystem of fumigating the beds and bedding contained in the said compartments while they are out of use or in storage in the said compartments, as during the day-time. I may use formaldehyde gas or spray in disinfecting said compartments, although I do not confine myself to its use, as I may employ several of the disinfecting gases or sprays that are now on the market, or I may have a special preparation compound for my use, and while I use a kind of apparatus for making and storing said fumigating agent I do not confine myself to this particular style of apparatus, as I may employ any of the several devices of the kind that are now made and are on the market, or I may have one constructed accordin to ideas and plans of my own but with w iatever style of apparatus or fumigating agent is used the object of the invention is to provide a system of fumigating the berth pockets or compartments beneath the floor of the sleeping cars or coaches, and thus to kill the germs, bacilli, or microbes which may be formed or be contained in the beds or bedding, besides purifying the air, and, if desired, perfuming the same, so as to be ready for use when the car is made up as a sleeper.
My system may also be used in connection with the ordinary style of sleeping-cars, which may be taken out of service and thoroughly fumigated by my invention by laying through the same pipes connected with my system.
One advantage of my invention is that it is adapted to be employed or used while the cars are in service and traveling en route, by which means I am enabled to kill the germs of any disease before they have a chance of getting seated, and I thus make the car or coach a perfect sanitary conveyance.
Referrin particularly by letter to the drawings, i represents a car or coach having a hangdown between the trucks to form berth pockets or compartments A in which are contained the berths B.
Located at any suitable place in the car is a tank D, which may be used to generate or store the fumigating or disinfecting medium, which, as stated, may consist of any of the disinfecting agents known as fluids, vapors, fumes, sprays, gases, &c. From the tanks D pipes d are led through the car in front of the various berth-compartments, which pipes are provided with outlets in order to convey the fumigating agent to the various berth-pockets. Each outlet is controlled by a valve E, which may be operated by a key inserted into the floor of the car in order to actuate the stem 6 of the valve, which rises to approximately the floor-level.
I wish it to be understood that I do not desire to be limited to the exact details of construction shown and described, for obviously modifications will occur to' persons skilled in the art.
IIO
What I claim as my invention is- 1. In a railway car or coach, compartments located beneath the floor of the same and means for fumigating said compartments.
2. In a railway car or coach, compartments located beneath the floor of the same, trap-doors placed above the said compartments and means for fumigating the latter.
3. In a railway car or coach, storage com partments or pockets located beneath the floor of the same, hinged doors to cover the said compartments, berths contained in the said compartments, and means for fumigating the same.
4. In a railway car or coach, berth-storage compartments located beneath the floor of the same, berths contained therein and means for fumigating said compartments.
5. In a railway car or coach, berth pockets or compartments located beneath the floor of the same and a pipe leading to said compartments for purposes of fumigation.
6. In a railway car or coach, berth-pockets or compartments located beneath the floor of the same and a pipe leading to said compartments for purposes of fumigation, and also a tank carried by the car and connected with the said pipe.
7. In a railway car or coach, berth pockets or compartments located beneath the floor of the same, and a pipe leading to said compartments for the purpose of fumigation, and also a valve for said pipe constructed and arranged to be operated by a key inserted in the floor of the car.
In testimony of the foregoing specification I do hereby sign the same in the city of New York, county and State of New, York this 21st day of May, 1906.
LOUIE J. HARRIS.
