Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed October 30, 1905. Serial No. 285,016.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL R. BALL, a citizen of the United States, residin at Oil City, in the county of Venango and tate of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Concrete Block- Molding Mechanism; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming art of this specification.
Tliis invention relates to concrete-blockmolding mechanism, and has for its object the roduction of a molding mechanism in whic the cores and the sides of the mold can be readily withdrawn from the block when the block has been molded, when the followboard with the molded block resting thereon ma be removed.
he features of this invention are hereinafter set forth and explained, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which Figure 1 is a side view in elevation of my im roved mold mechanism with parts thereof roken away. Fig. 2 is a to or plan view of the same with the mold medhanism ready for filling. Fig. 3 is a side view in elevation of the side of the mold. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the mold mechanism with the sides and ends moved outward. Fig. 5 is a view in elevation of the end of the mold.
In the drawings thus illustrating this invention, A A indicate the supportin -frame of the machine, the upper part A 0 which operates as a support upon which a follow board B rests. Within the part A of the frame there is a vertically-movable platform or frame O, provided at its ends with upwardly-extending projections O, the tops 0 of which are on the same plane when raised, as illustrated in Fig. 1, as the to of the follow-board B. The parts 0 are a so provided on their outer ends with shoulders 0. (See Fig. 1.) Secured to the vertically-movable platform or frame O are one or more corepieces adapted to pass up through suitable openings in the follow-board B. On the upwardly-extending projections O of the vertically-movable platform or frame C the ends of a mold E, when the mold has been 0 ened up after the concrete block is completed rest so that the mold E and cores D can be lowered simultaneously. The mold-box E is gether to not only made so that its ends and sides may be moved outwardly. This I preferably accomplish by ivoting on the sides and ends gearpinions F each of which is embraced by two yokes F, each of which has rack-gears on one side thereof, so that one rack engages the u per side and the other the lower side of t ie pinion F, as illustrated in Fig. 3. On the pinions F are secured operatinglevers G, those on the sides being adapted to engage catches g on the sides of the mold. From the yokes F rods F extend to and are secured, preferabl r adjustably, to the sides and ends of the mol d, so that the movement of the yokes F on the sides of the mold o erates to move the ends of the mold outwar or in Ward, as desired, and the movement of the yokes on the ends of the mold operates to move the sides inward or outward, as desired. To insure the corners of the mold being right angles when the sides and ends thereof are brought together, I secure to the ends of the sides of the mold angleieces H and at the top and bottom thereof gui e-pieces H and to the outside of the ends of the mold plates I, which operate with the parts H and H when the ends and sides are brought toguide them to their proper at right positions, but to bring them exactl molded angles to each other, so that a bloc therein will be exactl r square.
In the base A, I preferably mount an n right cylinder J, provided with the usual 1ston, (not shown,) from which a piston-r0 J extends upward and is secured to the vertically-movable platform or frame C. On the cylinder J there is a valve, preferably an ordinary four-way valve K, to which an inletipe L leads and from which an exhaust-pipe L extends, and from the u per and lower sides of the valve passages 7c extend to the up er and lower ends of the cylinder J. The va ve K is provided with an o crating-handle K, by means whereof the va ve K can be 0 erated to move the iston in the cylinder so as to raise the p atform C and the open mold E, restin thereon, and the core-pieces D D, secured t ereon, as shown in full lines, or lower them to the osition shown by broken lines in Fig. 1, as esired.
In operation the follow-board B is laced in position on the to of the frame I, the cores D D and mold E u on the latform O raised and the sides an ends 0 osed upon each other, when the mold E will rest entirely upon the follow-board B. The mold may then be filled with concrete, after which l the sides and ends of the mold are moved back from the block b r means of the levers G on the gear-pinions 1* until. the ends of the mold E rest upon the projections C of the platform C. The platform C can then be lowered, thereby withdrawing the cores D 1) from the block and lowering the open mold E below the level of the follow-board B, when the follow-board B, with the finished block thereon, can be removed and another follow board placed on the frame A, and the mechanism again operated as before.
Having thus described my invention, so as to enable others to construct and operate the same, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States,
1. The combination in a concrete-blockmolding mechanism, of a frame, a followboard. mounted thereon, a molding-frame resting thereon, rack and. gear mechanism adapted to movethe sides and ends of the mold outward and inward, core-supports beneath said follow-board, cores thereon extending upward through suitable openings in said follow-board, and means for raisin and lowering said core-supports, substantia 1y as described.
2. The combination in a concrete-blockmolding mechanism, of a mold for. forming waste the sides and ends of the block, pinions and rack-gears on the sides and ends thereof, connections between the racks on the sides of the mold and the ends of the mold, connections between. the racks on the ends of the mold with the sides of the mold, and angle-pieces on the ends of the mold adapted to contact with the sides of the mold, substantially as set forth.
8. The combination in a concreteblock molding mechanism, of a frame, a followboard mounted on the to thereof, a vertically-movable platform elow the followboard, extensions on the ends of said platform, a mold resting upon the extensions at the ends of said movable platform, mechanism on the sides and ends of the mold for moving the sides and ends of the mold inward and outward, a cylinder and piston in the base of the machine-frame, a piston-rod extending upward to and engaging the vertically-movable platform, andvalvc mechanism for operating the piston in said cylinder, substantially as set forth.
