Be it known that I, MASON SHERMAN PRICHARD, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the town of Goldbar, in the county of Snohomish and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Iiubricators, of which the following is a speciiication.
My invention has special reference to devices for transmitting oil automatically to reciprocating bearing parts, and has for the primary object thereof to simplify and improve devices of the above nature..
With the above and other desirable objects referred to hereinafter in view my invention resides in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as set forth in this specification and defined in the appended claims.
I/Vith reference to the accompanying drawings, in which similar reference-numerals designate corresponding parts throughout, Figure 1 is a fragmentary view, in side elevation, of an engine, showing my improved lubricator in partial section connected with the cross-head pin and Fig. 2 is a fragmentary plan view of the engine in partial section with the lubricator attached as in Fig. 1.
In carrying out my invention I provide an extensible and contractible oil-chamber, as 1, comprising a casing 3 and a tubular extension 4 slidably fitting therein and embraced by a stuffing-box 5, mounted on one end of said casing. Connected with the oil-chamber is a suitable reservoir for oil comprising an oil-cup, as 6, having communication with casing 3 through a tube 7, in which a suitable valve 8 is located, so that the iiow of oil from the reservoir to said chamber may be regulated.i The tubular extension 4 is arranged in parallellism with the line of movement of the part it is desired to iubricate-as, for example, the cross-head pin 9 of an engineand it is conveniently secured thereto by means of a laterally-projecting tubular part 4, having screw-threaded engagement with said pin and communicating with an oil-passage leading through the pin to the surface to be lubricated. The casing 4 is preferably provided with adjustable supports, as 10, each comprising a base part 11 and a stem 12, projecting laterally from the casing and slidably fitting in a suitable channel provided in said base, whereby the length of said supports can be varied. The stems 12 are conveniently secured in adjusted positions by means of set-screws 14, having screwthreaded engagement with the base parts 11, so that they can be set up to impinge respective stems 12. The base parts 11 are secured to the frame of the engine by screws or other suitable means with casing 3 in line with the extension 4 and with the supports 10 adjusted in conformity with the distance from the seats of their respective base parts to the center line of said extension.
In connection with chamber 1 I provide a means for venting the same to reduce suction when the device is in operation, and thereby insure a more regular feed of oil to the bearing part and freer action of the tubular extension 4, the said means conveniently consisting of an air-passage 1, communicating with said chamber and embodied in an upwardly-projecting end portion of casing 3, the outer end portion of said air-passage being located above said chamber and extending downwardly and outwardly to reduce the liability of dirt or grit entering the same.
In operation the tubular extension 4 reciprocates with the cross-head of the engine, working inwardly and outwardly in casing 3 in a straight line. The oil drops into said casing from reservoir 6 and enters the tubular extension 4,from whence it passes to the bearing-surface through the oil-passage in the cross-head pin.
The necessity of swing-joints is avoided in applying the invention and a simplified construction thereby obtained, while provision of means for venting the oil-chamber increases the efficiency of the device.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States of America, 1s-
bearing member, of an extensible and contractible chamber for directing oil thereto, comprising a movable portion connected with said member, and a relatively fixed portion, there being means for 4venting said chamber.

The combination with a reciprocating bearing member, of a lubricator comprising a tubular extension connected with said member and moving therewith in a straight line, a relatively fixed casing slidably embracing said extension and having a vent, and a reservoir for oil connected with said casing.
