PATENT.v OFFICE.
RAILWAY cnoss-TIE. swrroH-TIE, AND HEAD-BLOCK.
' Specication of Lettersatent.
Application inea Jim. 14. 1906. serial No. 321.680.
Patented Aug. 21, 1906.
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway Cross-Ties, Switch- Ties, and Head-Blocks; and we do declare the followingto be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such -as will enable others skilled in the 4art to which it ap pertains to make and use the same.
' This invention relates to improvements in railway `cross-tles, switch-ties, head-blocks,
and the like; and it consists in the novelconstruction,I combination, and arrangement Vof parts-hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive, strong, -and durable cross-tie composed of cement or other plastic material. i
The aboveV and other objects, which will appear as thenature of the invention is better understood, are `accomplished by the lconstruction illlustrated in. the
accompanying 'Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved railwy cross-tie, lshowing the track- .rails secured thereto. longitudinal sectional view through the` Fig. 2=is a `vertical same. 3 is a vertical transverse "sectional view', and Fig. 4 isa detail horizontal Referring:- to the drawings by numeral, 1 denotes the improved railway cross-tie,which is molded from vcement or any other suitab e plastic material into' rectangular form. I
order to strengthen this rectangular body 1, e
longitudinal strips or bars 2 and transverse connecting stri s `or bars 3 of corrugated metal are mol edwithin the same adjacent to its bottom, and in order to permit the track-rails R to be secured upon the ties by spikes S wooden blocks 4 are molded in the body 1 at suitable distances from its ends..
As shown, these blocks'4 are rectangular in form and extend vertically through the tiebody, their width bein considerably less than the width of the bo y 1, so that the latter is not weakened'to too great an extent.
Surrounding the tie-bod at oints where the blocks 4 are located are an s or sleeves 5,0f steel or other metal. These are rovided-or the purpose of strengthening an reinforcing the tie, and in their tops are formed apertures 6, through which the spikes S may be driven. The reinforcing-bands 5 correspond which, it will be understood, may be rectangular, as shown, or ofany'. other shape.
'The construction, use, 4and -advantages of this invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings. It ,will be seen that this tie will vbe stronger and inuch more durable than the woodentie and that it'may be produced at a com aratively small cost. The provision o the l from brooming'or crushing out of shape.
These bands areadaptedv to be removed when it is necessary to replace new blocks for old ones that have become rotten.
While we have shown and described the invention as embodied in a railway-tie, it will be understood 4that it may bei embodied in switch-ties, head-blocks, andvsimilar-devices.
Various changes in, the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing rom the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as defined `by rthe appended claims, Having thus described our invention, what `we claim' as new, and desire to secure'by Letters Patent, is l 1. A railway-tie `or the like comprisin a surrounding said tie and -saidblock. 12. A railway-tie or the like vcomprising a plastic body, a block of wood embed ed -therein, and a metallic strengthening-band surrounding saidtie andsaid block and having in its top a ertures to receive spikes for .fastening a trac -rail' upon said ban 3. A railroad-tie or the like comprising a body of plastic material, blocks. of wood molded therein and metal reinforcing-bands vcovering said blocks Aand surrounding said 4tie and having apertures in their tops, substantially as described.
4. A railway-tie or the like comprising a body lof plastic material, reinforcing bars or in shape to the cross-section ofthe tie-body,
plastic body, a block of wood embed ed v therein, and a metallic strengthening-bardl not strips molded therein adjacent to its bottom, set our hands in presence of two subscribing vertically-extending wooden blocks molded witnesses.
in said tie adjacent to its ends7 and metal reinforcing-bands eoverin said blocks and surrounding said tie.and ormed in their tops with apertures, substantially as shown and Witnesses:
described. II. B. VANDELL, In testimony whereof We have hereunto HOBART J. Fox.
