Description

No. 222.229. PATENTED AUG. 21, 1906. 2
' F. PIESSLINGER.
BEATBR ROLL WITH VENTILATED KNIFE CELLS.
APPLICATION FILED JULY'I. 1905.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRIEDRICH PIESSLINGER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
BEATER-HOLL WITH VENTILATED KNIFE-CELLS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 21, 1906.
Application filed July 7,1905. Serial No. 268,695.
4 del hia, in the county of Philadelphia, State of ennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Beater-Roll with Ventilated Knifc- Cells, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvementin beater-rolls, which can be applied to all rolls, as used in any system of beater, to beat or to cut paper-stock, material for making paper, or boards or pap-like substances; and the object of my improvement is to construct the beater-rolls in such a manner that the air filling the knife-cells (spaces between the knives) can leave each knife-cell not only on the two ends or shoulders of the roll, but on one or more oints between the ends or shoulders of t e roll, when the knife-cells plane into the liquid or pap-like stock.
A ther object of my invention is to so construct a beater-roll that it is provided with short knife-cells, each one of said knifecells extending over only a part of the entire length of the roll, so that when the knife-cells plunge into the pulp the air being expelled y the pulp can escape on both ends of the short knife-cells.
Further objects and advantages of the inventiomwill hereinafter appear and the novel features thereof will be specifically defined by the appended claims.
The invention is clearl-yillustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the numerals of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 re resents a front elevation of a beater-roll em odying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a sectional eevation of another embodiment which may be employed.
In both the embodiments shown the knives may be set parallel or in any angle to the axis of the roll or may be formed in any line, as they are already formed in serpentine or other lines.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corres onding parts in the figures.
Iiieferring to the drawings, 1 designates the roll-axis, having mounted thereon sectional roll-bodies 2 in any suitable manner.
3 designates knife-blades, which in Fig. 1 are shown as extending to the edge of the body-sections.
In the embodiment shown in Fig. 2, 4 designatcs the shaft on which the sectional rollbodies 5 are mounted, said sections 5 having kn ivcs 6 secured thereon by means of shrunk rings 7 engaging the apertures or slots 8 at the ends of said knives, it being noted that,
the ends of the knives in this instance terminate at a point within the ends of their bodysections, In use the axis of the beater-roll is always above the surface of the stock and the roll can be rotated with less power in roportion to the speed. The air asses rom the air-spaces between the bladhs through the passages formed between the sets of blades, said sets being in alinement, angularl disposed, or in staggered. relation to eac 1 other. The direction of the airpassing from the blades is in every case substantially circumferential and not axial, as has heretofore been proposed. By reason of the hi h angle of the blades the beater-roll can not on y be actuated at a higher speed in pro iortion to the power employed, but the s )eed of circulation of the stock is incrcaser As the air does not hinder the liquid or stock from filling the cells, the cells can be made much smaller thauon a beater-roll as heretofore constructed, and a roll embodying the improvements herein described and having the same diameter as one constructed according to the ordinary type will do .the same beating with a much lower speed and also save power,
since there are more knives on the roll-body. The stock circulates much quicker, and time will therefore be saved in beating the same quantity of stock, as is evident. Better circulation of the stock will also be obtained by a quicker and more exact discharge of the ventilated knife-cells. It will be apparent that while in Fig. 2 the knives have been shown in alinenient, whether these knives are in or out of alinemcnt depends entirely uponthc manner in which the sectional bodies are assembled.
\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure b Letters Patent, is-
1. In a )eatcr-roll, a sectional roll-body, knives carried by each section and arranged out of alineinent when said sections are in assembled position roviding air-passages for slots for retaining said knives in fixed relation :0 the circumferential escape of air at one or to said body. more points between the adjacent ends of the In testimony whereof I affix my signature knives. b n l n b d in presence of two witnesses.
2. In a eater-r0 a sect-iona r0 o y, knives having a slot at each end carried by FRIEDRICH PIESSLINGER' each section, the inner end of each knife ter- Witnesses: minating at a point within the end of their F. H. I'IENING, body-section, and shrunk rings seated in said J. C. SCHMIDT.
