To all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that 1, AUGUST LASANCE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Im-rovement in Trimming-Machines, of whic i the fol-lowing is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of my specification.
My invention relates to a machine for trimming the edges of wooden boxes, and is intended more especially for the purpose of trimming the corners and edges of wooden boxes whose sides are dovetailed into each other, eliminating the use of screws or nails, the object bein to take rough edges an corners, and thus give the box a neater a .pearance.
A further ob ect is to provide means for taking off any portions of the top or bottom that may extend beyond the sides of. the box pro er, and thus diminishing the likelihood of the ox being broken by reason of jars or the contacting of the extended arts of the top or bottom of the box with other objects, as is likely to be the case when the filled boxes are shi ped from place to place.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of my improved machine. Fig. 2 is an elevation taken from the rear side of the machine with a ortion broken away and shown in. section, t e same being taken along the line 2. 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of my improved machine more especially intended to show the mechanism for regulating the throw of the foot-treadle. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1.

A A are the side uprights or frame of the machine, which are suitably supported and united together by the cross-bars B B and C D D constitute a sectional table for the box to be operated upon and are sup orted on the bed-plate D. The tables D T) are provided with pivotal bearings, as at a, Fig. 4:, so that they may be tilted up at one end for a purpose to be hereinafter set forth. E is a revoluble shaft which extends transversely of the machine and is provided with suitable bearings b 6, Figs. 1 and 2, and is provided at its free end with the pulley F, which receives a belt from a power-shaft. The purpose of these bits or knives will be hereinafter set forth. The extent to which the bits d extend beyond the bits 0 can be seen in Figs. 2 and 4. The sectional table D D is of course provided with slots or cut-out )ortions, through which the ki'iivcs extend w on. the table is in its normal I provide the two sets of the cuttors or knives G and G so that opposite edges of the box may be trimmed or rounded at the same time.
In order that boxes of different widths may be trimmed, it is necessary to. have at least one set of the cutters and one of the sections of the table ad'ustably mounted so that they may be move transversely. I therefore provide the shaft E with a slot and secure the cutter-head G to it b a ke connection, so that the cutter-head may e slid transversel of the shaft when occasion reuires. 0 course it is also necessary that t -16 table D be adapted to move in or out to ward or from the center of the machine.
I have shown the table D" as provided with a slidable pin connection, as at (see Fig. 1,) with the frame of the machine. The pins in take through the frame A of the machine and into the table D. The pins 1: are provided with springs Z, so as to hold the table-section D in its normal position, but et permit the table D having a slight give or an irregularity or variation in a iven-size box, it being understood that t e table D has at that time been adjusted to the particularsized box that is being trimmed, so that should a particular box vary slightly in size the table D", together with the cutter-head corresponding therewith, may yield to the variation or irregularity. For this reason I provide the box or casing to which the cutters of the cutter-head G are secured with an extension or collar m, the collar being provided with a groove m, as seen in Fig. 2. Taking into the groove m of this collar or is an arm n, (see Fig. 1,) which is secured permanently to the table D. It will be seen that the arm a, which may either take around the collar m in the groove m or be made bifurcated, so as to take to either side of the collar, as may be desired, will move the cutter-head G with the table D whenever the latter is moved by reason of any slight irregularity or difference in a particular or given sized box to which the machine is set. The cutter-head G is keyed to the shaft E by the set-screw or key 8, which takes into the slot 15 in the shaft E, as can be seen in Fig. 2. The cutter-head G is of course connected in this manner to the shaft E, so that it may move along the shaft E whenever the sectional table D yields by reason of a slight modification or irregularity in the particular-sized box for which the machine is set.
The tables D D are provided with guides f q, the purpose of the guides g being to hold the box slightly above the tables D D,
while guides f are for the purpose of retaining the box in its proper horizontal path and directly at right angles to the axes of the cutters. These guidcsf and 9 may be strips of metal bolted onto the tables I) I), as can more readily be seen in Figs. 1 and 4, the guides being bolted onto the upward extension of the angularly-formed tables D D.
H H are yokes which are connected by bolts h to the tables D D. Connected with the yokes Hin any suitable manner are the rods J J which have pivotal connection with the shaft or transverse rod K, which latter has its bearing in the links L, which are keyed to the shaft M, which has its bearings in the frame A of the machine. Secured to this loosely-mounted shaft M in any suitable manner is the foot-treadle N, which extends forward to the front of the machine. It will be seen that b 1 depressing the foot-lever N the shaft M will e rotated, thereby throwing the links L upward, which will raise the transverse rod K, and with it the rods J J, whereby the rear ends of the sectional table D D will be thrown upward. The sectional table being pivotally connected to the frame of the machine at a will be at an incline when foot-lever N is depressed, thus raising it sufficiently to bring the upper surface above the cuttin ed e of the bits or cutters c.
In order that t e t row or elevation of the table by the foot-treadle N may be regufated, i provide the bifurcated arm 0, which is properly keyed to the shaft M, as can be seen in. Fig. 3, the bifurcations extending above and beneath the crossbar of the frame A. 'lhese bifurcated ends may be provided with set-screws, which may be set so as to still further control or regulate the rotation of the shaft M by the frmt-treadle The purpose of this table-tilting mechanism is to permit of the trimming off of any extending or overlapping portions of the lid. or bottom of a box, which is done by the straight or shearing cutters (I, which, as before stated, extend above the cutting edge of the cutters c. if is understood that the cutters d are simply intended to trim off any protruding portions of the top or lid of a box, and when this is done the tables D 1), together with the box operated upon, must be tilted above the cutting edge of the rounding-bits 6; otherwise they would produce or cut a concaved groove in the lid near its edge.
I have illustrated and described what I. believe to be the preferable form of machine; but it will be readily understood that the machine may be altered in a number of mi.- nor details, and instead of using the throwregulating mechanism for the foot-treadle described other mechanism may be employed and. differently-cinistructed bits or cutters may be used instead of those 1 have shown, and therefore l. do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise construction herein set forth; but
What I claim as my invention, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A trimming-machine for wooden boxes and the like, comprising a sectional table provided with guideways and being pivotally mounted at its one end on the frame of the machine, each section provided with a slot, 9. revoluble shaft, with two sets of cutter-heads mounted therein, each set comprising arounding-bit and a shearing-bit, means whereby said sectional table may be raised to permit of the action of but one portion of said outteeheads.
2. A machine for trimming the edges of wooden boxes and the like comprising a frame, a rcvoluble shaft suitably mounted therein, a set of cutter-heads com rising concave or rounding bits and strai it or shearing bits, the cutting edge of t m latter arranged to extend slightly be end the cutting edge of the former and to fie in a different vertical plane, a sectional table havin pivotal connection at its one end with the frame of the machine and provided with slots through which the cutter-heads are adapted to extend, guidewa s provided on the tablesections whereby t e relation to the cutter heads of the box to betriinmed is maintained, one of the table-sections and its corresponding cutter-head ad justably mounted, mechanism havin controllable connection with the one end oi said table-sections whereby their relation to the cutter-heads may be altered, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a trimming-machine for wooden boxes and the like, the combination of a pivotally-mounted sectional table provided with guideways, one ofsaid sections being yieldmgly mounted, and the other section transversely adjustable, a revoluble shaft provided with two cutter-heads, each head comprising a set of cutting-bits and a set of shearmg-bits, with means whereby the table may be arran cd to permit of the action of but one set of bits on the box being trimmed.
4. A trimming-machine for wooden boxes and the like, comprising a sectional table provided with guidewa s, a slot in each of said sections, a revolub e shaft provided with two cutter-head's, each cutter-head comprising a set of rounding-bits and a set of shearing-bits adapted to extend up through the slots in the table-sections, one of said tablesections and its respective cutter-head being yieldingly mounted on said machine, and the other table-section and its respective cutterhead being mounted to ermit of transverse adjustment, substantial y as shown and described.
5. A triuiming-machine for wooden boxes and the like comprising a sectional table provided with guideways, a slot in each of said sections, a revoluble shaft provided with two cutter-heads, each cutter-head comprising a set of rounding-bits and a set of shearingbits, one of said table-sections and its respective cutter-heads being icldingly mounted on the frame of the machine, and the other table-section and its respective cutter-head being transversely adjustable, and means whereby the table-sections may be tilted at their one end to bring their surface above the cutting edge of the bits, substantially as shown and for the pn ose described.
6. A trimming-mac n'ne for wooden boxes and the like, com rising a sectional table, guideways adjusta l aly secured to said sections, a revoluble shaft provided with two cutter-heads each comprising a set of cuttingbits and a set of shearmg-bits, one of said tale-sections and its res ective cutter-head being yieldingl mounte means intermedi ate of said tab e-section and its cutter-head whereby their relation to each other is constantly maintained, the other table-section and its cutter-head being adjustable transversely of the machine, and means whereby the table-sections may be tilted at their one end and their horizontal relation to the cutter-heads altered, substantially as shown and for the purpose described.
7. A trimming-machine for wooden boxes and the like, comprising a sectional table pro vided with guideways, a slot in each of said sections, a revoluble shaft provided with two cutter-heads, each cutter-head comprising a set of rounding-bits and a set of shearingbits adapted to extend up throu h the slots in the table-sections, one of sai table-sections and its respective cutter-heads being yieldingly mounted on the frame of the machine and the other table-section and its respective cutter-head being transversely adjustable, means whereby the table-sections may be tilted at their one end, and mechanism whereby the movement of the tilting means may be regulated, substantially as shown, and for the purpose described.
