MAIL DELIVERING DEVIUE. APPLIGATION FILED MAYQ, 1906.
THE mmms PETERS 0a., WASHINGTON, n. c,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MAIL-DELIVERING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 31, 1906.
Application filed May 9, 1906. Serial No. 315,979.
Mail-Delivering Devices, of which the follow ing is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in mail delivery devices; and the invention relates more particularly to a device carried by a mail-car to deliver mail packages or pouches to wayside stations.
The invention has for its object to provide positive and reliable means for resiliently supporting a mail-pouch upon the exterior of a car whereby the pouch can be easily removed from the car while the same is in motion. To this end I provide a mail-pouch with a yoke or strap adapted to be engaged by a gripping-arm carried by a post or standard located at a convenient point contiguous to the track over which a mail-car travels. In supporting a pouch from a car I use twopart arms, the outer parts or ends of said arms supporting a pouch in a vertical position in order that it may be caught by the gripping-arm, and to permit of the pouch being easily and quickly removed I resiliently connect the outer parts or ends of said arms to the car.
The detail construction of the delivery device will be presently described and specially claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawings forming a part of this specification, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a car equipped with my improved device. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of one of the supporting-arms. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 4 is an elevation of a portion of mail-pouch constructed in accordance with my invention, and Fig. 5 is a plan of the gripping-arm as carried by a post or standard.
In the accompanying drawings, I have illustrated a portion of a conventional form of mail-car 1, the one side of the door-frame 2 of said car being equipped with my improved delivery device. 7
In constructing the device I employ two arms 3 and 4, each arm consisting of two parts or sections 5 and 6. The parts or sections 5 carry plates 7 7, which are secured to the door-frame 2 of the car 1 by bolts or screws 8 8. The parts or sections 6 6 are ivotally connected to the parts 5 5, as at 9 9, and are provided with curved ends 10 10, the curved end of the arm 3 extending upwardly, while the curved end of the arm 4 extends downwardly, the object of which will presently appear.
The parts or sections 6 6 of each arm are provided with side lugs 11 11, to which coiled springs 12 12 are connected, said springs being secured to the car 1 at each side of the plates 7 7, The springs 12 12 of the arm 3 are fastened to the car slightly above the plate 7 to maintain the arm 3, especially the part or section 6 thereof, in an elevated or slightly-raiscd position, while the springs 12 12 of the arm 4 are fastened slightly below said arm and tend to pull downwardly'upon the part or section 6 of said arm. The springs 12 12 also serve to maintain the pivoted parts or sections 6 6 in alinement with the parts or sections 5 5 of each arm. 7
The mail-pouches used in connection with the delivery device have their ends 14 14 provided with straps 15 15, carrying links 16 16. The links engage over the curved ends 1.0 10 of the arms 3 and 4 and maintain thepouch 17 in a vertical position between said arms. The straps 15 15 support a metallic yoke or strap 18, extending outwardly in a plane.
common to the arms 3 and 4.
A post or standard 19 is erected in close proximity to the track (not shown) over which the car 1 travels, and said post is provided with a protruding gripping-arm 20, having a hook-shaped end 21 to engage the yoke or strap 18 and remove the pouch 17 from the arms 3 and 4.
Since the parts or sections 6 6 of the arms 3 and 4 are pivotally connected to the parts or sections 5 5, the parts or sections 6 6can be pulled inwardly toward the center of the door-frame 2 to permit of the pouch 17 being easily placed in engagement with the arms 3 and 4, and upon being released they will assume their normal position, supporting the pouch 17 in a position at right angles to the car 1.
As the car 1 travels toward the post or standard 19 the yoke or strap 18 iscarried in a plane alining with the hook-shaped end 21 of the arm 20, and as the yoke or strap engages said arm the pouch 17 is safely removed from the arms 3 and 4.
The pivoted parts or sections 6 6 of the arms 3 and 4 swing in a reverse direction to that Whi ch the car travels and permits of the pouch 17 being easily and quickly removed Without injuring the pouch 17 or the arms 3 and 4.
The strap or yoke 18 serves as a handle or grip for the pouch 17 When not supported by the arms 3 and 4. The yoke 18, arms 3, 4, and 20 are constructed of strong and durable 1 metal to Withstand the rough usage to Which they are subjected.
. engage said yoke,
a yoke carried by said pouch, a hook-shaped armcarried by said standard and adapted to substantially as described.
2. The combination With a car, and a mail pouch, of two-part arms secured to said car, springs connecting the outer sections of said arms to the car, means for suspending said pouch from the outer ends of said outer sec tions of the arms, and a yoke carried by said 1 pouch and adapted to be engaged by a device What I claim, and desire to secure by Letsupported adjacent to the track upon which ters Patent, is
1. In a mail-delivery device, the combinathe car travels.
In testimony WhBIGO'l I affix my signature tion With a car, a mail-pouch, and a standard in the presence of tWo Witnesses.
located contiguous to the path of travel of said car, of tWopart arms carried by said car, l the outer parts of said arms being resiliently connected to said car to support said pouch,
