Description
PATENTED JULY 10, 1906.
0. H. MORRIS. FILE BINDER. APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 18 1905.
UNITED STATES PATENT orrron.
FILE-BINDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 10, 1906.
Application filed September 18,1905. Serial No. 279.024.
T0 ctZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. JMORRIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pasadena, county of Los Angeles, State of California, have invented new and useful Imrovements in File-Binders, of which the folowing is a specification.
My invention relates to means for temporarily securing together a plurality of loose sheets, such as music-sheets or newspapers; and the object thereof is to provide a binder of simple construction in which the leaves are easily and quickly inserted or detached. I accomplish this object by the binder described herein and illustrated in the accompanying drawings as applied to securing together a plurality of sheets of music, in which Figure 1 shows a back or cover secured to my binding device. Fig. 2 is an end elevation showing the plurality of music-sheets secured therein. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the attaching-hooks.
In the drawings, 5 is a back bar in the ends of which are mounted attachinghooks. These hooks consist of a ring 6, which is almost closed, as shown in Fig. 2, and a shank 6, which is bent at right angles to the ring portion thereof, and the same is preferably made of spring-wire. A U-shaped bindingstrip 7 has holes 8 in the arms thereof, which holes are sufliciently large that the strip will turn easily on the ring when in place thereon.
In using my device a binding-strip is placed between two connected sheets 9 or leaves of music or other paper with the ends projecting therefrom and the arms projecting beyond the sheet, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The arms are then threaded upon the rings of the binding-hook in the following manner: If there are a number of sheets to be attached together and there are no sheets in the binder, one of the attaching-hooks would be removed from the bar, and the arms of the bindingstrips at one end would be threaded thereon, and the hook would be placed in the bar, as shown in Fig. 3. The free end of the ring of the other hook would then be sprung outwardly far enough to enable the other arm of the binding-strip to be threaded thereon, when the sheets would be secured together, the resiliency of the ring being such that the free end thereof would spring back to a position which would prevent the arms of the binding-strip from coming off accidentally. If leaves were already in the binder, a binding-strip with a sheet of paper thereon would be threaded on the ring at one end and then brought into correct relation to the other sheets and threaded onto the other rings. Where the binder is used for holding sheets of music, I refer to secure thereto covers 10. (Shown in *ig. 1.) The binding-strips are preferably stamped from thin sheet metal, and the back bar is preferably of wood and semicircular in form. By this construction it is seen that I have provided a binderin which the loose sheets may be quickly inserted and will be held securely therein and from which they can be quickly and easily removed.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A binder comprising a back bar, attaching-hooks mounted to the ends thereof, said hooks comprising a nearly-closed ring with a shank bent at right angles thereto a U- shaped binding-strip having holes in the arms thereof threaded upon said books.
2. A binder comprising a back bar having a semicircular face; attaching-hooks comprising a nearly-closed ring and a shank bent at right angles thereto revolubly mounted in the back bar 3 and- U-shaped binding-strips having holes in the arms thereof threaded upon the rings of said attaching-hooks.
In witness that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto subscribed my name this 11th day of September, 1905.
CHARLES H. MORRIS.
Witnesses:
