Specification of Letters Patent.

\ Application led February 13,1905. Serial No. 246,411.
- To all whom/it may concern:
Be it known thatage, EDNA MOARTHUR and l ALOIs L. ROSMAN, citizens of the United `States, andresidents of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements'm Type-Writin Machines; and
we do hereby declare that t e f ollowin is a full, clear, and exact description thereo Our, invention consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts hereinafter particularly set forth with refer- 4ence to the accom anyin drawings and subsequently claime the o ject of-said invention being to facilitate line-spacing and carriaUe-shift in type-writing machines.
'abuts the hub of said hand-lever.
.Figure -1 of the drawings represents a side elevation of a type-writer line-spacing and carriage-shift mechanism in accordance with our invention, and Fig. 2 a perspective view of same.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A indicates the carriage of a type-writin machine as ordinarilyconstructed, and the platen mounted on the carriage. The ratchetwheel C of the platen is shown engaged by its line-spacing pawl D, hung in connection with the hand-lever E, fulcrumed on the carriage, and attached to the pawl to swing therewith we show another lever F, one end of which The other end of the lever' F is connected to what is hereinltermed a pull-cord G; but this devicemay be a chain or cable. The pull-cord is trained on sheaves H I and connectedat its other end to a treadle J or an equivalent dei vice arranged and connected with reference to movement b -the operator without removal of either and from writing position. The illpplementary.- lever F being on the same crum as the awl-D and stopped at one end lagainst the ub of the hand-lever, pull on said'su 4 lement'ary lever will result infa tilt of sai 'and-lever and pawl.v The hand-lever being actuated to tilt the pawl, the 'supplementary lever moves with said hand-lever. l A
he sheave H opposes draw of the ullcordandis shownmounted on an arm attached to the carriage A, thel vsheave I being v shown mounted on an arm L in swing connection with a bracket M, attached to a post of the machine-frame. (Illustrated by dotted lines.) A thumb-screw N engages one end of thearm L and the machine-frame to hold said arm rigid in position to aline the sheave. I with the sheave H; but b loosening the screw the aforesaidarm maylbe swung parallel to the adjacent endcf said frame to economize space when not in use.
The carriage is herein shown at full limit of travel 'to the left of the machine operator, and the lever Fbein actuated said carriage is swun back to full imit of travel in the opposite irection simultaneous with a linespacing operation ofthe platen, any suitable means being employed to coact with the lever mechanism and free thel aforesaid carriage reliminary to its shift to starting position, om which it has step-by-ste movement incidental to depression of t e keys and space bar or bars, as is common in machines of the kind to which our improvements relate. n
Having thus described our invention, what lwe claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination in a type-Writin .machine ofthe platen-ratchet awl and its andlever, a supplementary ever having the .same fulcrum as said pawl and operative in one direction to tilt the same and its hand-lever, the carriage provided with an arm extension, an arm in connection with a frame-post, sheaves mounted in connection with said arms, a treadle, and a flexibley pull device that is trained on the sheaves and connected at its ends to the supplementary lever and treadle.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands, at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, in the presence of two witnesses.
