WINDOW-SCREEN.
-Speciication of Letters Patent.
Patented June 2e, 1906.
Appiiaian filed August 25,1905. serai No. 275,710.
io ful improvements in \\'indow-screens of the general character or type embodying in their. structure an open framework constructed to fit within the window-framing, the frame being provided witlia pane of wire-netting or other open-mesh fabric to prevent the ingress of in'sccts through the window without obstructing the passage ol air and light.
The primary object of the invention is to' providea screen with im roved and simpliming- A further` object is to provide a corner brace or bracket for the screen-frame which 2 5 Will embody in its construction a suspension device for pivotally and detaehably hanging the screen-frame iii position foruse.
A further object is to provide a corner brace or bracket which will embody in its 3o construction means to act as a stop to limit swinging movement of the screen;
. l The invention consists inthe improvements t0 be full described hereinafter and the novelty of w 'ch will be particularly pointed out and distinctly claimed.
I have fully and clearly illustrated my invention in the accompanying drawings, to be taken as'a part of this specification, and wherein- 4o Figure 1 is a perspective view of a windowframe, taken vfrom the outer side and show- .ing the window-screen embodying my invention in position for use. Fig. 2 is a detail erspective view of one corner of the screen- 4 5 ame, showing the integrally-formed cornerbrace and suspension device. Fig. 3 is detail perspective view of a lower corner of the screen-frame; showing the integrally-formed corner-brace and stop. Fig. 4 is a perspective 5o view of a modified form of brace and* suspension device. Fig`. 5 is a view in perspective of a modified form of the brace and stop. Figs. 6 and 7 are views in perspective of further modifications.
Referring to the drawings by numerals. of y reference, 1 designates a window-frame of any well-known construction, in connection with which my invention is shown in applied j position foruse, it being one of the irnpor-v tant advantages of my invention that itmay be fitted to any window-frame' of common and ordinary construction without modifying or changing the construction thereof and without making any additions thereto. i
The window-frame of the construction shown embodies the usual sill 2, vertical side pieces 3 4, and to cross-piece 5,tl ie inner vertical faces ofV tie Side pieces being provided with proper guide-beads 6, between which the' respective' s'li'ding sashes (not shown) move. Located on the innerside of each of theside pieces 3 4, outside of the guidebead thereon, is a pivot-pin 7, which may be ent instance is shown as consisting of an -ordinary screw which efiiciently performsv 'of any suitable construction and in the presthe `functions for which it is employed. It
will bey observed that these screws are arranged directly opposite to each other and, as shown, are located at a point just above the lower rail of the up )er sash. These screws constitute supports -ior the screen-frame', as hereinafter. set Yout, and ev. shown, are
adapted to su )port a screen eia si'ze to coverthe lower lial of a window; but'it will be understood that in cases where it is desired to employ a screen to close the entire windowframe these pivot-pins will be located closely i adjacent the upper cross-piece of the window--A frame. 0
8 designates the screen, consisting of the usualframe built u from side pieces 9 9 and upper and lower en pieces 10 1() in the usual 'I manner', the frame being closed by the usual wire-net 11, as clearly Shown. The frame of the screen is provided with comer-braces of novel form, those at the iipper corners being provided with devT'ces formed integral there'- with for detachable engagement withthe Y Y pins in the frame, whereby the screen's sus,- pendcd in the window-frame and thebraces vat the lower corners being formed' with integral stops projecting laterally-from the frame to engage the side pieces of the windowframe to arrest the swinging movement of.
the screen toward the windowsashes.
For the purposes of this appie-ation the upper braces are shown as comprising limbs or straps -12 12', disposed at right an les to each I IO other and adapted to bejarrange about the corner ofthe frame, said corner projecting into the angle between said straps, the latter roo being laid, respectively, in close contact with the top edge of the upper end piece and the outer edge of theside pieces and secured thc rein any suitable manner, as shown, by the s crews 1 3. Formed integral with the corner- (grace and constituting practically an extenf sion or prolongation of the verticallv-dis- 'posed strap or lii'nb thereof is a. suspension device consisting of a verticallr-dirccted io hook 14, having the inclined opening: to reeeive and hook over the pins 7 7 on the inner sides 'of the window-frame. lt will be seen that the hookon the brace is formed with its -outer face continuous with the lace ol' the rx 5 'vertical brace-strap, so that when the screen' fore described, consisting of the angularlydisposed straps 15 15 to extend on opposite Sides ofthe joint at the corner of the frame and to be fastened to the lower horizontal 3o piece and the vertical side pieces. Formed integral with the vertical limb of each of the lower corner-pieces is a laterally-projecting piece 16; extending from the outer vertical edge of said limb at right angles thereto and .35 extending outwardly beyond the side pieces 4of the screen-frame a snfiicient distance to engage the outer faces ol" the vertical side pieces of the window-frame when the screen is swungr inwardlyon the pivot-s 7 7 to serve 4o as a stop to llinit the inward movement ol the screen.
In the forms of the invention shown in Figs. 1 to 3 of the drawings the upper and lower sets ofcorner-braees and the suspension devices and stops formed integral, re-' Speetively, therewith are cast in one piece, whicliprovides avery simple and satisfactory forni oiconstruction;v but the said corner-pieccs'lnay, if desired, be made of sheet 5o metal, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5. ln Fig. 4
the upper corner-brace and suspension' deviceare shown as being constructed from a single band or stop ol sheet Inetal, said band being 'laid on the top of the upper rail ot' the screen, as at 17, and secured thereto and then carried .around the corner andl down the outer face of the side piece for a suitable distance, as at 1S, said b and being then reversed and carried vertically parallel to and 6o in contact with the part 1'8, as shown at 1),
said two portions being secured rigidly in position by means of screwsjZO. The free end of the band projects above the upper rail of the screen and is formed with a hook 21 of substantially the saine form imd for the same purpose as the hook 14, heretofore described. The form of the lower vconfier-piece, as shown in Fig. 5, is practicallytlie saine as that shown in Figs. 1v to 3;4 but instead of beink;r cast the said corner-piece is formed of sheet metal, the stop being bent up. at right angles to' the vertical limb thereof, as shown alt 22.
ln Figs. o and 7 l'urthermodilications are shown, in the former the brace consisting of' the common form ol" plate formed with limbs 22% at right angles to each other, but in the same plane and adapted to be laid llat on the lace ot thescreen-frame in the corner thereof, so that said limbs lie, respectively, on the adjoining pieces of said frame. [n this lorm the suspensiondiook is formed integral with the vertical edge of thebrace, but is bent at right angles to the plane of the brace,s0 as to lie flat upon. the out-er vertical edge of the screen-frame, as at 24. 1 ln this forni of the invention the stop-consists of an extension 25, formingan integral part of the.frame,
said stop being in the same plane as the body or major part ol' the brace.
When the screen embodying the improvements is to tbe applied to a window-frame,
' the hooks are placed over the pins 7, and the screen is then permitted to swing,r inwardly on said pins as pivots towardthe windowsashes until the stops carried by the lower'.
corner-*pieces abut the vertical members of the window-frame, when the screen will be in proper position to attain. the objects for which it is employed. The lower end of the .screen may be secured in position against outward movement by means of a suitable latch 26 on the screen, which cooperates with a catch 27 on the window-sill.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pa ent, is-
1. ln a windouscreen, a screen-frame, corner-braces at the upper and lower corners thereof, each of the upper braces having an attaching device formed integral therewith, an( each ol'v` the lower braces having a stop formed integral therewith, said stop projecting laterally beyond the sci'een-haiii0.
2.' ln a window-screen, a 'screenraind suspension devices carried at the upper por-A tions thereof, corner-braces at the lower corners of said frame, each lower corner-brace having a stop formed integral therewith, said stop projecting outside the outer edge of the screen-frame.
In' testimony whereof Iv hereunto atlix my signature in the. presence of two subscribingl witnesses. 1V. S. HOOD. Witnesses:
