"UNITED STATES PATENT orrion.
Specification of Letters Patent. 7
Patented. June 19, 1906.
Application filed March 6, 1901'. .SerialNo. 50,083.
. scribed and claimed hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a.
portion of this specification, Figure 1 'is a plan view of a fire-grate with my attachment applied thereto. ,Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of same. Figs; 3 and 4. are similar views showing a modification of the invention.
Like letters refer to like parts throughout all the views. v
The improved attachment consists of a plurality of plates 01,, having an arched broad upper portion and a narrow lower portion. The shoulders 1), formed by the broad upper portions of said plates, rest on the grate-bars 0, while the narrow lower portions extend downwardly through the grate. Each plate a is provided with suitable projections 6, engaging similar projections on the adjacent plates, whereby free air-spaces are produced between the several plates at, enabling greater quantities of air to be admitted to the fire. The plates at are braced by means of' rods d extending through suitable holes therein and having screw-nuts or other fastenin means at their opposite ends; otherwise t e plates are imperforate. The advantage of the imperforate feature will be apparent when it is considered that as the current of air passes upwardly into thespace between the plates it cannot escape otherwise than by passing through the fuel on top of the plates, whereas 'if the space above were obstructed with fuel and the plates were per-'- forated the air-current would pass from that space through the plate into another where the egress was unobstructed. This would manifestly result in an uneven combustion.
In Fi s. 3 and 4 a modification is shown in which t e upper edge of the plates instead of being in the form of an arch is inclined toward the central portion of the grate in such manner that the fuel thereon will have a constant tendency to shifttoward the center of the grate, thus preventing the collection of the unconsumed fuel at the sides and the formation of a dead area.
The narrow downwardly-extending portions of the plates a provide means whereby the heat acting on the plate is constantly transmitted downward. Moreover, a large surface is olfered to the air, whereby the plates are quickly cooled and prevented from being burned.
The devices, formed of several plates braced together, may be easily withdrawn from and mounted on the fire-gratefor instance, one on each side thereofthus avoiding the necessity of effecting constructive changes. Should a plate be deteriorated, the same may be easily replaced.
The form or shape of the plates a may be modified. Thus Figs. 1 and 2 show arched, while Figs. 3 and 4 show triangular, plates. A plurality of plates may be cast in one piece, or the whole attachment may be cast in a single piece'of the required length.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pat ent, is
1. In a device of the character described, the combination with the grate-bars, of a plurality of substantially parallel verticallydisposed plates arranged upon and at each side of the grate at an angle to the direction of the draft over said grate, each of said plates having a broad upper portion resting upon and extending above the surface of the grate and a relatively narrow lower portion extending below the rate-surface and between the grate-bars, t e upper edge of said plates being inclined toward the central por' tion of the grate, projections carried by the plates and servin to space the same apart, said plates provi ed with holes fitted to receive tie-rods and being otherwise imperforate, tie-rods passing through the holes in the plates, and securing-nuts thereon.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with the grate-bars, of a plurality of substantially parallel verticallydisposed plates arranged upon the grate at an angle to the direction of the draft over said grate, each of said plates having a broad upper portion resting upon and extending above the surface of the grate and a relatively narrow lower portion extending below and being otherwise imperforate, tie-rods v passing through the series of plates, and se- IO curing-nuts thereon.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two Witnesses.
CHRISTIAN DIETERLE.
