To all whom itlmay concern:
Beit known that I, MoNTIEBLEvINs MINER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Sampson, in the county of Douglas and Oregon, have invented a new and Improved Friction-Set, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention has reference especially toa device for setting the friction-pin'of hoistingengine drums, although it is useful in other connections, as will hereinafter appear.
The object ofthe invention is to reduce as much as possible'the friction incident to the operation of setting or moving the friction-pin in a aratus of the class referred to attain by a peculiar arrangefriction, devices and the adaptation of other peculiar friction devices to coact between the actuating-screw, head, box, and friction-pin in such'a manner as practically to absorb the friction between the moving parts, rendering the device more durable and easier of operation and increasing the mechanical efiiclency of the hoisting-engine. The combination with a shaft and a pin movable through the same, of a box having connection with the shaft, a head located in the box and having an internally-threaded tubular ortion projecting through the outer end of the box, means engaged with said tubular portion for holding the head against rotation, an actuating-screw operating in the tubular ortion of the hea antifriction bearing d evices acting between the head and the outer end of the box, and antifriction bearing devices acting between the head and '45 said pin of the shaft.

The combination with a shaft and a pin movable through the same, of a box having connection with the shaft, a head located in the box and having an internally-threaded 5o tubular ortion projecting through the outer end of t 1e box, means engaged with said tubular portion for holding the head against rotation, an actuating-screw operating in the tubular portion of the head, antifriction 5 5 bearing devices acting between the head and the outer end of the box, antifriction bearing devices acting between the head and said pin of the shaft, and a packing acting between the tubular ortion of the head and the outer wall of the ox, said packing being held in position by the first-named bearing devices. 3. The combination with a shaft and a pin movable through the same, of a boxhaving connection with the shaft, a head located in the box and having an internally-threaded tubular portion projecting through the outer end of the box, means engaged with said tubular portion for holding the head against rotation, an actuating-screw operatin in the tubular portion of the head, antifriction bearing devices acting between the head and the outer end of the box, antifriction bearing devices acting between the head and said pin of the shaft,- the first-named bearing devices comprising a carrier or cage disk, bearing members held therein, and wear-plates at the sides of the carrier-disk, the wear-plates being engaged by said bearing members and engaging respectively with the head and the box.
4. The combination with a shaft and a pin movable through the same, of a box having connection with the shaft, a head located in the box and having an internally-threaded tubular ortion projecting through the outer end of t e box, means engaged with said tubular portion for holding the head against rotation, an actuating-screw o )erating in. the tubular portion of the hea antifrietion bearing devices acting between the head and the outer end of the box, antifriction bearing devices acting between the head and said pin of the shaft, said second-named bearing members acting between the screw and pin comprising disks respectively engaged with the screw and in, and having sliding connection respectively with the head and box, a cage or carrier disk located between the first-named disks, and bearing members held in the carrier-disks and engaged respectively with the first-named disks.
5. The combination with a shaft and a pin movable through the same, of a box having connection with the shaft, a head located in the box and having an internally-threaded tubular ortion projecting through the outer end of t e box, means engaged with said tubular portion for holding the head against rotation, an actuating-screw o aerating in the tubular portion of the hea antihiction bearing devices acting between the head and the outer end of the box, antifriction bearing devices acting between the head and said pin of the shaft, the second bearing members acting between the screw and pin comprising a disk juxtaposed to the head and having an opening therein, a pin attached to the head and loosely fitted 1n the opening, a second disk engaged with the said pin of the shaft and having an opening therein, a )in carried by the box and fitted loosely in. the opening of the second-named disk, a carrier or cage disk bearing between the two disks first named, and bearing members held by the carrier-disk and engaged with the firstnamed disks.
6. The combination of a shaft, a pin axially movable therein, a box connected with the shaft, a head stationary relatively to the box, an actuating-screw operating in the head, antifriction devices acting between the head and box, and antifriction bearing devices acting between the screw and in.
7. The combination with the shat of a hoisting-engine drum and a friction-pin movable through the shaft, of a box in connection with the shaft, a relatively stationary head, antifriction devices acting between the head and box, and means in connection with the head for actuating said pin, said means for actuating the pin comprising a screw threaded in the head, and antifriction bearing devices acting between the screw and pin. a
8. The combination of a shaft, a pin axially movable therein, a box connected with the shaft, a head stationary relative to the box, an actuating-screw operating in the head, a disk for receiving the thrust of the screw, means for constraining the disk to move with the head, a disk for transmitting the thrust to the pin, means for constraining said disk ,to move with the box, and antifriction devices between the head and the box, and between the disks.
9. The combination of a shaft, a pin axially movable therein, a box connected to the shaft, a head stationary relative to the, box, an actuating-screw operating in the head, a disk for receiving the thrust of the screw, a disk for transmitting the thrust to the pin, and antifriction devices between the head and the box and between the disks. 7
