Be it known that 1, PETER ELLrs, a subjecttain new and useful Improvements in Rotary Motors, of which the followingis a specifica tion.
This invention provides a motorof simple construction operated by steam, compressed an, or other fluid-pressure.
The invention comprises a drum or boss around which cylinders are arranged radially.
Ports through the drum give communication between the interiors of the cylinders and passages in a spindle, hereinafter referred to. Pistons are fitted into the cylinders, which areopen at their outer ends, so that the pistons may project therefrom. Leakage of steam past the pistons is prevented by cutting circumferential grooves or by fitting piston-rings around the pistons. The drum,

Referring to the drawings, the boss 1 is bored to form cylinders 2, 3,4, 5, 6, and 7,
branching radially from the center of the boss, which has a bore 8. Ports 9 provide communication between the bore 8 and the cylinders 2,3, 4, 5, 6, and 7. Pistons 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, and fit the cylinders and are adapted to project therefrom. The ends of the pistons are rounded, or they may be provided with friction rollers. The boss is mounted upon a hollow axle 16, having a steam-port 17 and exhaust-port 18 separated by a partition 19, the port 17 communicating with the end 20 of the axle and the port 18 with the end 21.
A casing 22 has a cap secured by bolts or screws 23 and has an internal diameter greater than the'diameter of the boss 1. The casing-surrounds the boss 1 and has a hole 24 of large diameter.
The motor is started by turning the hollow axle 16 by means of its lever 25 throughpart of a circle, when the cylinders 4 and 5 (see Fig. 3) receive steam from the end 20 of the 95 axle 16 and the pistons12 and 13 are forced outward and press against the interior periphery of the casing. 22, while the cylinders 7, 2, and 3 are open to the exhaust end 21 of the axle 16. -1oo The motor revolves the pulley 26, which has bearings 27 and 28, adjustable laterally by screws 29.
Leakage of steam between the axle and the drum is prevented by collars 30 and 31, inter0 5 gral with the axle and which receive ferrules 32 and 33 respectively, fitting against the faces of the drum and held thereagainst by the spring 34, fitting within the collars behind the ferrules. Steam leaking as aforesaid no finds access to the back of the ferrules, which are forced against the drum and make a steam-tight joint therewith.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. A motor comprising in combination, a drum having a series of radially-formed cylinders, pistons for each of said cylinders, a casing of larger circumference receiving said drum and supported only by said pistons and an axle upon which the drum is revolubly mounted, said axle having motive-fluid and exhaust passages, each cylinder having a port giving communication with said motivefluid and exhaust passages in the spindle alternately substantially as specified and illustrated.
2. A motor comprising in combination, a drum having a series of radially-formed cylinders, pistons for each of said cylinders, a loose casing of larger circumference than and receiving said drum and supported only by said pistons and an axle upon which the drum is revolubly mounted, said axle having motive-fluid and exhaust passages, each cylining said drum and supported only on said pistons, a spindle upon which said drum is mounted having passages for the admission and exhaust of motive fluid from said cylinders, the drum and the casing revolving in the same direction substantially as herein specified and illustrated.
