CHIMNEY-TOP.
Speeication of Letters Patent.
Patented June 12, 1906.
Application filed August Z8, 1905. Serial No. 276,049.
To @ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN F. SPATZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bonesteel, in the county of Gregory and State of South Dakota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Chimney-Tops, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in chimney-tops of the class intended for use upon the ordinary, usually brick, chimneys of buildings.
My primary object is to provide a construction of chimneytop which shall be adapted to be quickly and rigidly secured to the tops of chimneys of different sizes and shapes, thus rendering unnecessary in the manufacture of such devices the making 'of a special size of chimney-top for every size of chimney.
Another object is to provide a construction the large parts of which may be nested together in packing the device for shipment and which may be readily assembled when required for use. y
I accomplish these objects by forming the chimney-top of longitudinal sections adapted to be moved relative to each other, whereby the opening in the bottom of the device may be contracted or expanded to cause it to conform to the size and shape of the chimney to which it is to be fitted.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Whichigure l is a view in elevation showing in full lines my improved chimney-top secured in place to the top of a chimney and in-dotted lines the sections of the chimneytop spread apart preparatory to adjustment upon t e chimney; Fig. 2, a view in side elevation of a chimney, showing the chimney-top surmounting the chimney in sectional elevation taken at the line 2 on Fig. 1 and viewed in the direction of the arrow; and Fig. 3, an enlarged broken view of the chimney-top in cross-section taken at line 3 on Fig. 1 and viewed in the direction of the arrow.
A is the body portion of the chimney-top, formed, preferably, of sheet metal and of general hood shape, open at its restricted top and widened bottom, having a straight portion a, forming the opening in the bottom, shown as square in cross-section in the drawings, at which the device is seated upon the chimney B, and tapering sides c. The body portion comprises longitudinal sections O O O O, shown as being four in number, relatively adjustable to each other and each forming one of the corners of the body portion. Each of the sections C is provided along one lateral edge with a deep groove or recess c, which may be constructed as shown in Fig. 3, as by making a double bend inthe edge of the metal to form an edge thereon substantiallys shape in cross-section, into which grooves the edges of the adjacent sections may be readily inserted and partially or wholly withdrawn, thus permitting the sections to be telescoped or spread apart to reduce or enlarge the opening at the bottom without forming spaces between the lateral edges of the sections.
D is a collar forming the top portion or crown ofthe chimney-top and having an outwardly-iiaring rim D', which its over the tops of the sections O and to which the sections are preferably pivotally secured, as by stove-bolts d, to permit each of the sections C to be moved relatively to each other. The chimney-top is applied to use by adjusting the bottom a of the body portion upon the top of the chimney by expanding or contracting its lower opening, by spreading or drawing together the lower ends of the sections which swing at their connections upon thecollar D. The spreading of the sections causes their edges to move in the grooves of the adjacent sections, the sides of which press upon the edges of the sections conined therein to hold the sections in adjusted positions. To insure against the spreading of the sections, their overlapping edges may be interlocked, as by indenting them with a prickpunch, as shown at What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A chimney-top comprising, in combination, a collar having a flaring rim, and a body portion having Haring sides and composed of sections having overlapping edges pivotally conneoted With said rim, each section having one and contract the body portion at its lower og its lateral edglels bent rnd ehent to form an l end, for the purpose set forth.
e ge su stantia y S-S ape 1n oross-seotion provided With a groove to receive the overl JOHN F' SPATZ' lapping edge of the adjacent section, Where- In presence 01?- by the sections may be moved independently IRVING I. LINDLEY, of each other upon said sections to expand EDW. F. HELLER.
