SEAMLESS HOSlEFlY.
Original application filed Juan 7, 1901, Sarial N mBSJZZ. Divided and this application filed Nn mb 16,1905,
To will whom it may; CUILIEIH'IL.
Bo it known that l, (lsonon ll, (innnm. a citizen of the United States, residing at (low inantown, in the county of Philadvlpliia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented vermin new and useful Improvements in Seamless l-losiery; and l do hereby declare the following to be a. full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable olhig'rs 1o skilled in the art to which it apportains to make and use the same.
This application is a division of my former application for improvements in seamless hosiery, Serial No. 63,622, filed June 7, mm. My invention relates to inaehine-nnule seamless hosiery, and has for its, (illjlll llw procluotion of a stocking having improved ornamental oll'sets.
Hitherto manufacturers of ornamental 2o seamless hose or stmhings have been able to make the ornamental open-work or larrwork on the front of the stocking only, and such ornamental lace or o 14311 work began at the top of the stocking and continued down over the ankle. and front of the foot to the toe portion. I am, however, able to produve an article of this class having a )ortion of plain knii Ling at the top of the leg oi the stocking, the log composed of sections of lacework alternating wit h 0 sections of ,lain knitting around the rntirr log, the heel and bottom of the foot and too being made of plain knitting, while the open work sections are continued over the ankle and foot with a portion of Jain-knitted fabtie inter )osed between the lower end of sueh open or lace work sections and the too.
In the drawing I have shown a stocking embodying my invention, the same being partially in perspective to show the ornato inentfal section extending entirely around the 1x1 such drawing, A is the leg portion of the stoekinfii and B the foot ortion. At the top of t 2 leg portion is a. p sin-knitted por- 5 tion a. Commencing at the clot a: a: the leg of the stookin is formed of p sin-knitted portions 0, unite by opemwork or lace sections 05, the one alternating with the other entirely around the leg. The loops of the several a courses formin onefi are of the? lace or open .work are ma 0, as fo lows: Starting at the plain section 1, the thread forms a straight cross-thread e to the next plain section, crossing the space of one or more plain loops. A iven number of plain loops are then made. fiho l-luead then makes a further cross-thread Specification of Letters Pateni Patented June 5, 1906.
Serial No. 287.699.
I In the next si-uiion of plain knitting, and so on entirely around the log of [he stocking. (lo the next round 1hr rross-tlu'oml is nnnlo I in like umnnrr. ()n lho third round the i'l'oss-thrmul e is made in the some manner. I Un lho fourth round tliocross-llneiul isdrawn ldown over the three ('ltlfiS-l'lllK-INJS v.3 e forming the slung-Mod. loop (1', as is well ondorsioud in the knitting of iiu-k lnhrirs. This is oontinued to [ho mini lniirkod 5 whore the heel is knitted of plain loops. After the formation of the heel the knitling is continued, forming the bottom of plain loo is and the top of the ornamental courses and plain serlions, as ln-rrinlwlorv sot forth, until the point .2 is ronvhed, at whioh point a number of plnin-knittml courses are ormod rntiroly around the stocking The too is then completed with plain loops, thus forming a stock in: whirh has the ilaiirlmitted portion a, the log of orniinn-nlznl sections a, the heal I) of ilain loo is, tho bottom of the foot of )lain 'nitting l, and the section b of plain nitting inter msed lN-lWCPI! tho ornamental courses and the too I) of the stocking This stocking may he made of one continuous thread, or it may be made by knitting the lnwl and toe of one thread and the remaining portions of the stoolrin from another thawed, or it may he made my forming the heel and too of one thread and the other portions ol the stockingknitted froin two, three, or four other threads, as the manufacturer niayprefer. The stock may he knitted upon a machine constriicte in the well-known manner to produce took-knitting, provision front and hook portions of the stocking to be thrown separately into operation to knit tuck or lain knitting, as described.
hile I have described the ornamental effect as n'odurod by employing in the ornamental lignres the three cross-threads e e a with a fourth, forming an elongated loop connecting and holding the others, this exact report-ion is not necessary or essential, as ut one, two, or more of the cross-threads to array elongated loop may be employed to suit the taste or fancy of tho manufacturer. Tho airan onu-nt of openwork spaces in respect to t uplain-knitted portions may also be varied, and a single plain loop may be made between the lore-sections, wing the stoclrin the appearance of lining finned enployed'solely on the front of the stocking.
