SYSTEM latented May 29, 1906.
signed for indexing way-bills and to make use of the way-bill number as a key to the page and column of a record-book in which an entry of theWay-bill is kept.
With these and other objects in view the present invention consists in the combination and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view of an index-page embodying the features of the present invention. Fig. 2 is a view of a way-bill. Fig. 3 is a view of a station-expense bill. Fig. 4 is a detail view illustrating a modification. Fig. 5 is a view showing the manner of numbering the initial pages of the book.
in setting forth the present invention a description of one of the pagesof the index will first be given, and then the manner of making the entries in connection with the way-bills and stationexpense bills will be explained. V v
Upon reference to Fig. l of the drawings, wherein has been shown at'A one of the index-p'ages, it will be seen that this page is divided into a series of main columns, each of which has been designated B, extending from the top to the bottom of the page, with a transverse l1ea(ling-c .)lu1m1 extending entirely across the/page attbc topsof the main columns. The transverse beadingcolumn 0 is of course intersected and subdivided by the main longitudinal columns B, and in these subdivisions appear the numerals from U to 9 in their numerical succession from left to right of the page. Each of the main columns is subdivided into four supplemental columns, of which the lefthand column is designed to receive the name of the place from which the .way-bill was received, and it is therefore headed W. B. From. The next column is designed to receive the date of the way-bill and is appropriately header W. B. Date. The next column is designed to receive the way-bill number and is therefore headed WV. B. No, while the next column isdesigned to re ceive the number of the station-expense bill, or what is technically known as the Station Pro, and is therefore headed Station Pro. tVithin the right-hand portion of each W. B. No. column the page-number, which in the present illustration is 75, is printed to form a column in accordance with the number of entries the W. B. No. column is capable of containing. Prefixed to each of the numbers 75 in each of the columns is the number of the respective column, there being a space at the left-hand side of the members of each column of numbers for the reception of an entry, as will be hereinafter described. In making use of the present index when a way-bill is received-such for instance, as illustrated at D in Fig. 2 of the drawings-an entry of the Way-bill is made in the index, the location of the entry being determined by the way-bill number, which is shown at E and in this instance is L- 3475. In accordance with the present method the last two di its of the way-bill number indicate the page of the index upon which the entry is to be made, which in the presentinstance is 75, while the third from the last digit, which is 4, indicates the column in which the entry is to be made. To enter the present way-bill, the clerk turns to page 75 and makes the entry at any point in column 4 thereof, it of course being customary to make the entry immediately following the last entry. It is designed to have the indexpage and the entry made in contrasting colors-for instance, the column of numbers being printed in black and the entries made with red ink. Thepresent entry is made by writing in the W. B. From column the name of the station from which the way-bill was rcccived-for instance, J acksonville-the date of the way-bill being entered in the next column and the remaining characters of the way-bill 'number prefixed to the printed number 475 in. alinement with the place and date entry. Either before or after the way-bill has been entered in the index and date of the way-bill.
out according to some approved form, such as shown in l? in Fig. 3 of the drawings. Upon this bill is entered the date of the receipt oi the way-bill and the number and The Expense Bill or a tation Pro. is of course given; a serial number, as shown at G, which in the present instance is 1080, and the number 1080 is entered in the Station Pro. column.
The present index has been designed for quickly obtaining the number of the Ere cated by looking for the characters which first page is numbered 00,
are prefixed to the last three digits of the way bill number. W hen a way-bill number has been located, the Expense Bill or Station Pro. number will be found in the next adj acent right-hand column, which in the present instance is 1080.
When an index-book covers a period of a year only, the date of the Station Pro. is not entered but where the book covers a period of more than a year it will be found useful to also enter the date of the Station Pro, andto permit of entering the date and number of the Station Pro. it is proposed to employ a double column, as indicated in Fig. 4- of the drawings, one ha f the column being-provided with the heading Date l and the other with the heading .l lo. By preference the date-section oi the Station Pro. column is adjacent the Way-bill No. col- .urnn in order thatthere may be no confusion between the Way-bill Station Pro. numbers.
To providefor the entry of way-bills whose three final digits include one or more naughts, the initial pages of the book are numbered, as indicated in Fig. 5that is to say, the
the second 01, the third 02, and so on to 09, after. which the pages are numbered consecutively from 10 upward. In. explanation of the utility of this numbering of the pages it will be supposed that it is desired to look up a way-bill whose final digits are 00. The book is opened-to the page numbered 00, and the way-bill entry will be found in the main column of this page, according to the digit that precedes the naughts of the W. B. No. Again, to ascertain the location of a numbers and the way-bill whose last three digits are/30W the book should be opened to page-numberg9, and the entry will be found in the third 3 unm.
