'TROLLEY-WIRE HANGER.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed April 21, 1905. Serial No. 256,781.
provements in Trolley-Wire Hangers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in trolleywire hangers; and itconsists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a Fig. 2 is atransverse vertical section. Fig. 3 is a detail of the clamp. Fig. 4 is a view of the hanger with. the clamp removed. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the cap. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the insulating-washers.
In the practical application of my invention I provide a hanger comprising three principal parts-a cap A, a stem B, and a clamp C.
The cap A is of the general outline represented in Fig. 5 of the drawings and comprises a base-plate (1, provided at either end with arbors a, havingiholes therethrough for the reception of drift-bolts or lag-screws a for securing the cap to its support.
The stem B comprises a substantially T- shaped piece of metal, the body portion thereof having a screw-threaded end I) inserted in an opening a in the center of the base-plate a and insulated from the base-plate by washers 1) 6 of suitable material, above and below the plate. A metallic Washer 12 resting upon shoulders b on the stem, supports the lower insulating-washer, and a second metallic washer b encircles the screw-threaded end above the upper insulating-washer. The stem is secured in place by a nut b engaging the screw-threaded portion of the stem above the base-plate. As will be seen by reference to Fig. 6 of the drawings, the washers b b are provided with flanged portions 5 b ex tending into the opening a thus securing a perfect insulation.
A nut 71 loosely encircles the body portion of the stem and rests upon lugs b arranged transversely of the body portion and projecting on each side thereof, as indicated at b. That part of the body portion of the stem between the lugs I) and the shoulders 12 is of greater extent than the thickness of the nut b, and between the branches 6 is a cut-away portion 6 The clamp O, preferably of brass, is of U shape, as shown in Fig. 3, having its ends c cut .away to fit between the projecting ends I) ofthe lugs 5 and screw-threaded on their outer surface to engage the nut b on the shaft-B.
The operation of my invention will be the lugs 6 evenly supporting the clampnut and securing adirect and equal pull on the clamp. The projecting ends of the lugs prevent any twisting of the reduced ends of the clamp, even when the greatest force is exerted on the clamp-nut.
It will be seen from the descri I tion that the clamp may be entirely detac ed from the hanger. This is a desirable feature, especially inv minework, since the hanger can be placed in position and the trolley-wire in- 'sertedafterward. When so detached, there is but one loose part to handle, all the other parts remaining securely in place.
My hanger will also be found useful as a splicing-clamp for securing breaks in the trolley-wire, it being only necessary to introduce the broken ends of the wire into the opposite ends of the hanger and clamp them in place, the current being restored through the clamp.
In line construction a considerable length of the trolley-wire may be loosely supported in the hanger in such manner that traction on the free end will tighten the entire length, after which the tightening of the clamps will retain the wire in its taut condition. I am able thus to support a great length of loose wire in cpnstruction-work.
Having'thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a trolley-wire hanger, the combination of a cap, comprising a plate having a central opening, drift-bolts traversing the ends of the plate, arbors on the drift-bolts and above the late, a stem having a reduced screw-threaded portion for engaging the central opening in the cap, insulating-washers encircling the stem above and below the plate, flanges on the washers extending into the central opening, a nut engaging the screw-threaded end of the stem above the washers, laterally-depending branches on the stem, transverse lugs at the junction of the branches and the stem and extending beyond a U-shaped clamp inclosing the branches,
and provided with reduced screw-threaded ends extending between the lugs'and engag ing the clamp-nut, substantially as described.
2. In a trolleywire hanger, the combination of a cap comprising a plate having a central Opening, drift-bolts traversing the ends of the plate, arbors around the drift-bolts above the plate, a stem having a reduced screw-threaded end engaging-the central opening, means forsecuring the stem to the cap, means for insulating the stem from the cap, laterally depending branches" on the stem, transverse lugs'on the stem' at the junction of the branches andextending beyond the faces of the stem, -a clamp-nut encircling the stem and supported by the lugs, and'a U-shaped clamp partially inclosing the depending branches and having reduced screw-threaded ends extending between the lugs and engagingthe clamp-nut, substantially asdescribed.
3. In a trolley-wlre hanger, the-combination of a cap, a stem secured to the cap and insulated therefrom, laterally depending branches on the stem, transverse lugs at the junction of the branches and the stem and extending beyond the faces thereof, a clampnut loosely mounted on the stem and supported by the lugs, and a U-shaped clamp partially inclosing the branches and having reduced screw-threaded ends extending between the lugs and engaging the branches.
4. In a trolley-wire hanger, the c'oiiibinatlon of a ca a stem secured to the cap and insulated t erefrom, laterally depending branches on the stem, a U-sha ed clamp for 'ing the reduced ends of the clamp and a clamp-nut supported on the lugs for engaging the screw-threaded ends of the clamp.
5. In a trolley-wire hanger the combinationof a cap, a stem secured to the cap and insulated therefrom, a U-shaped clamp partially inclosingthe lower portlon of the stem, oppositely-disposed transverse lugs on the stem and extending beyond the'faces thereof for receiving the ends of the clamp, and means supported by the lugs for securing the clamp in position.
6. In a trolley-Wire hanger the combination of a stem, a U-shaped clamping morn;
ber-inc losing the lower portion of the stem and provided with reduced screw-threaded ends, oppositely-disposed transverse lugs on the stem and extending beyond the faces thereof for receiving the reduced ends of the clamp, and means supported by the lugs for engaging the said reduced ends.
