Description
' acetic et er 'ALEXISC. HOUGHTON, or SYRACUSE, NEW YORK.
B ENZQYL SUOCINYL PEROXID AND PROCESS T0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXIS C. HoUoHToN,
a citizen of the United States, residing at S acuse, in the county of Onondaga, State 0 New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Antiseptic Com-- .pounds; and I do declare the'following to be onnmoa coon car dooojoocrnt and I have named it benzoiyl succinylperoxid.
This compound has the following distinuishin features: It is a colorless, or staline bo ver soluble in acetone, solu Is in c loroform, and alcohol, moderatel soluble in benzene and ethyl ether, slig tly soluble in acetic acid, insoluble in ligroin. It has a melting point of about 96 centigrade. It possesses an aromatic odor,
a sharp peppery taste, and is an intense germicide.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed September 26, 1905. Serial No. 280,080. (Sptohnena) OF MAKING SAME.
Patented may 22, 1906.
In water the compound is decomposed, forming succinic acid and benzoio eracid.
The rocess' of forming benzoy succinyl peroxi consists in adding to one hundred cubic centimeters of a tener-cnt. watery solution of benzoic eracid ve grams of suc- .oinic anhydridt T e benzoyl succinyl peroxid separates out as a fine colorless powder, which 1s removed by filtration from the water mixture.
fiavin thus fully set forth my invention, WhatIc aim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. An antiseptic compound, consisting of a monobasic peroxid derived from benzoic eracid and the anh drid of succinic acid, W ich is characterized by the following properties: it is a colorless, c stalline body, possesses an aromatic odor an a sharp, peppery taste; in Water it forms benzoic peracid and succinic acid, and it is an intense germicide.
2. .An antiseptic compound, consisting of a monobasic peroxid derived from benzoic oracid and the anhydrid of sucoinic acid, W 'ch is characterized by the following properties; it is a colorless, or stalline body, possesses an aromatic odor an' a shar peppery taste; it is soluble in chloroform, a cohol an benzene; insoluble in ligroin, and has a melting-point of about 96 centigrade; when placed in water it-graduall goes into solution with the formation of enzoic peracid and succinic acid, and it is an intense germicide.
In testimony whereof I sign this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
ALEXIS O. HOUGHTON. Witnesses:
E. S. WHEELER, I. G. Howm'r'r.
It is hereby certified that Letters Patent No. 821,291, granted May 22, 1906, upon the application of Alexis G. Houghton, of Syracuse, New York, the title of the invention was erroneously Written and printed Benzoyl Succinyl Peroxid and Processes of Making Same, whereaethe said title should have been written'and printed Benzoyl Succz'nyl Peroxid, and in line 28 the word benzoiyl should be benzoyl; and that the Said Letters Patent should be read with these corrections therein that the same may conform to the record of the case in the Patent Office.
Signed and sealed this 12th day of June, A. 1)., I906.
[SEAL] F. 1. ALLEN,
Commissioner of Patents.
