Description

No. 820,915. PATENTED MAY 15, 1906. F. CANPIELD.
VEGETABLE SLIGER. APPLICATION FILED nno.12.1so4.
PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK OANFIELD, OF DENVER, COLORADO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO WILLIAM H..FENN, OF DENVER, COLORADO.
VEGETABLE-SLICER- Specification of Letters Patent.
iratented May 15, 1906.
To (all whmn it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK CANFIELD, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vegetable-Slicers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled. in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in devices for slicing, cutting, or grating vegetables.
My improved device is adapted for use in making slices having parallel sides, in cutting the vegetable so as to make comparatively thin elongated pieces or strings, and also for the purpose of grating the vegetable whereby it is separated to form an approxi mately homogeneous mass composed of comparatively small particles. In order to perform these several functions, the body or holder of the instrument is adapted to receive a number of distinct devices, each calculated to perform its own peculiar function, An important feature of the invention is that the frame of the device is provided with a number of distinct grooves or ways 011 each side, in either pair of which the cutter, stringer, or disintegrating device may be placed, according to the thickness of the slice orthe size of the strings required.
Having briefly outlined my improved construction, Iwill proceed to describe the same in detail, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which is illustrated an embodiment thereof.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of the device. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the device. Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 3 3, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detail view of one form of cutting device. Fig. 5 is a similar View of a grating device. Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 3, except that the device shown in detail in Fig. 4 is illustrated in connection with the main frame.
The same reference characters indicate the same parts in all the views.
Let the numeral 5 designate a U-shaped holder, to the parallel arms of which is attached a plate 6, having sides 7, extending at right angles to the body of the plate. These sides are bent over the members of the U- shaped frame. This U-shaped frame is preferably composed of a heavy wire, to the trans verse part of which is attached. a handle 8.
The plate 6 between the side parts is pro vided with an opening 9 for the reduced or sliced material to pass through after it has been acted on by the cutter. The sides of the device adjacent the opening 9 are each provided with a number ofparallel grooves or ways 10, in either pair of which may beinserted a cutter of any suitable construction.
In the drawings the numeral 12 designates a flat plate adapted to form slices having parallel sides, the numeral 13 designates a corrugated plate adapted to form the vegetable into stringy parts or comparatively small elongated portions, while the numeral 14 designates a device for grating or reducing the vegetable to comparatively small portions. This part 14 is provided with orifices formed by punching out the material from one side whereby the opposite or operating surface is roughened to form a grating or disinte rating device. The side edges of all of the devices (designated 12, 13, and 14) are adapted to enter the grooves 10 of the sides of the part 6, and either may be employed at will, according to the function it is desired to perform. If comparatively thick slices are recl uired, the cutter may be placed in what I wi lterm the upper set of ways, as shown in Fig. 3, while if comparatively thin slices are required the cutting device may be placed in what I will term the lower set .of ways or the set nearer the bottom of the device. By the term bottom here is meant the flat portion of the device between. the side parts containing the grooves or ways.
As shown in the drawings, the body of the device may be formed from an integral piece of material, the ways 10 being produced by bending the sides 7 inwardly to form beads separating the ways or grooves in which the cutting devices are inserted, as heretofore explained..
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- The combination of a U-shaped frame or holder formed from an integral piece of wire, a body portion attached to said holder and formed from an integral piece of metal, said body being composed of a bottom part, side parts bent to form angles to the body part, said side parts being attached to the parallel members of the U-shaped frame by bending their edges outwardly over the same, the sides of the body portion being provided with a number of separated grooves or ways produced by bending the side parts inwardly to form interior beads, and a cutter-plate removably held in one of said grooves the bot tom of the body part below or adjacent to the cutting device, being cut away to allow the sliced or disintegrated material to pass through, the closed end of the U-shaped frame being provided with a handle, while I 5 the parallel members of the frame project beyond the body part at the extremity remote from the handle, and form a support for the device during use.'
In testimony whereof I affiX my signature 20 in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK CANFIELD.
