Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1,,WALTER H. BALDWIN, a citizenof the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hoisting Apparatus, of which the following is a s ecification.
My invention re ates particularly to safety appliances for hoisting mechanism of the nying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a plan view, partly in section, of hoisting mechanism equipped with. my safety appliance Fig. 2, a partial section, on. an enlarged scale, taken as indicated at line 2 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3, a broken section taken as indicated at line 3 of Fig. 2.
In the construction shown, A represents a frame having journaled therein three parallel shafts B, C, and D. Power may be communicated to the shaft B from an engine (not shown) through the medium of a sprocketwheel- I). A pinion b fixed on the shaft B, meshes with a gear 0, journaled on the shaft C, and a pinion 0, fixed on the shaft C, meshes with a gear (Z, fixed on the shaft D. Journaled on the shaft D is a drum E, to which is applied a hoisting-cable c. Secured to the drum at one end thereof is a fricti0n-wheel e, to which is ap lied a brake-band 6 controlled by'a roc r-shaft e arm 6 and handwheel-equipped screw e 111 the usual manner. The usual manually-operated clutch mechanism F serves to connect the drum to the shaft D atwill.

Shiftably keyed on the shaft is a brakewheel G. to which is applied a, brake-band 9. As shown, the key 'g of the wheel G works in a transverse slot 9 in the shaft C and serves as a medium for shifting the wheel G. The Wheel G is equipped with an annular friction member 9, which works in a groove in the side of the gear c,-whereby the gear may be locked to rotate the shaft C through the medium of the wheel G. A spring g tends normally to separate the gear and brake wheel, and a screw 9 equipped with a handle serves to force the brake-wheel against t e gear.
The brake-band g has one end joined by rods g to the long arm-of an automat- 'ically-acting brake-lock g comprising a rock member 9 journaled in bearings g and a spring g, connected with the member g and with a stationary support. The brake-band has its other end joined by a rod 9 to the short arm of the member 9". As shown, the member g really has its arms divided into four parts, between the middle two of which is secured the rod 9 and between the two in termediates and the outer parts of which are secured the rods 9 the rod 9 passing between the rods g". A pin 9 serves as a pivotal connection for therods g and a pin 9 serves as a pivotal connection for the rod 9, and it is to be observed that the pin g? is closer to the axis so of the member 9 than is the pin g. The spring g tends to hold the pin 9 depressed, and a stop g, carried by the membet 9 by engagement with the frame member g"?, which supports the bearings 9 positively limits the rotation after the spring g has acquired a certain ex ansion.
The manner of use wil be readily understood. Power may be communicated to the shaft B from a gasolene-enginesay located at any convenient point. After the o erator starts the engine he turns to the mec ianism shown, and after first making sure that the brake-band e is loose he turns the handle g and couples the gear 0 to the brake-wheel G and so to the shaft C.
