POLISHING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUsTAv TuscHEL, trader, a subject of the Russian Emperor, re siding at New York, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Polishing-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My present invention relates to the art of polishing wood and the like, and has for its object to provide an improved machine or apparatus whereby the surfaces are polished mechanically in an economical way.
Broadly stated, the invention consists of a suitable frame carrying a number of adj ustable and revolving above a movable table intended to receive the work to be polished, said polishing-balls being preferably rotated by means of an electric motor and through the agency of suitable transmission devices.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown one form of embodiment of my improved. machine.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the polishing-machine, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of same. Fig. 3 shows the elevation of a detached carrier. Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of same. Fig. 5 is a view, partly in side elevation and. partly in section, of said ball-carrier and Fig. 6 is an underneath view of the body of the carrier, showing a certain fabric piece 23 in section.
Referring now to the drawings, 1 represents a flat table of any desired length and width having legs 2 and provided with a longitudinal groove 3, wherein a movable workholder 4 is slidably arranged. Said workholder 4 may be moved forwardly and backwardly by means of the feed-screw 5, provided with an operating-handle 6.
Secured to the table 1 is a yoke-like frame 7, to the front of which is attached a dovetailed guideway 8, on which are adjustably mounted forwardly-projecting brackets 9, engaged by the adjustin -screw 10, provided with an operating-handle 11. Each bracket 9 terminates at its free end in a s lit socket 12, adapted to be clamped upon t e spindleholder 14 by means of the screw 13. Each spindle-holder 14 is provided with a rear longitudinal toothed bar 15, meshing with a toothed pinion 15, keyed on a horizontal shaft 16, which is the common shaft for all the pinions 15 and provided with an operatpolishing-balls arranged ing-handle 17. This arrangement permits of easily raising and lowering simultaneously the several polishing-balls by actuating the handle 17, while the actuation of the handle 11 results into the lateral adjustment of the polishing-balls.
Rotatably mounted in each spindle-holder 14 is a vertical spindle 18, the lower end of which is provided with a suitable recess, hole, or the like adapted to be engaged by and hold the extension 19 of the hollow polishing-ball carrier 20, said extension being held in said recess by means of a set-screw 21 or otherwise. The bottom of the hollow polishingball carrier 20 is provided with three circular holes made at a small distance apart from each other and adapted to receive three small balls 22, made of felt or similar material, said small balls 22 being covered by means of a piece of fabric, cloth, or the like, as shown at 23. The metallic ball-carrier 20 is made hollow, as already stated, and filled with spirit and polishing material. The upper end of each spindle 18 is provided with a belt-pulley 24, connected to another pulley 25 011 a horizontal shaft 26, Fig. 2, through the agency of a belt 27. The horizontal shaft 26 is j ournaled in suitable standards 28 and carriesat one end a pulley 29, connected, by means of a belt 30, to the drive-pulley 31 of a suitable electric motor 32.
The work to be polished being fastened upon the movable holder 4, the operator actuates the handle 11 for adjusting the ballcarriers 20 laterally and the handle 17 for lowering the balls 22 into the desired contact with the surface to be polished. The machine is then started, whereupon the movement of the parts acts to rotate the small balls 22 of each ball-carrier 20 slowly yet sufficiently so that they continually feed the polishing material to the fabric. Meantime the carriers are moved forwardly and backwardly, as desired, by means of the screw 5. The spirit and polishing material contained in the ball-carriers 20, being more or less viscous, is only permitted by the polishing-balls to discharge slowly.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a polishing-machine, the combination, With a frame and a work-holder on the same, of a plurality of polishing-ball carriers, polishing-balls arranged in said carriers, and
means for effecting movement of the workholder and ball-carriers the one with reference to the other, substantially as described.
2. In a polishing-machine of the class described, the combination with a frame, and a movable work-holder on the same, of a plurality of adjustable hollow polishing-ball carriers, a plurality of polishing-balls made of felt carried by each carrier, a suitable fabric covering said balls, means for adjusting said ball-carriers vertically, means for adjusting the same laterally, and means for rotating the same, substantially as set forth.
3. In a polishing-machine of the class described, the combination with a frame, a suitable work-holder arranged on the same, and means for moving said work-holder forwardly and backwardly, of a plurality of vertical rotatable spindles arranged above said work-holder, a hollow polishing-ball carrier for each spindle, and capable of containing any desired polishing material, means for removably attaching the ball-carriers. to the rotatable spindles, a plurality of felt balls projecting from the under side of each-ballcarrier, means for adjusting the same vertically, and means for rotating the same, sub stantially as set forth.
4. In a polishing-machine of the class described, the combination with a frame, a suitable work-holder arranged on the same, and means for moving said work-holder forwardly and backwardly, of a plurality of ver tical rotatable spindles arranged above said work-holder, a hollow polishing-ball carrier for each spindle, and capable of containing any desired polishing material, means for removably attaching the ball-carriers to the rotatable spindles, a plurality of felt balls projecting from the under side of each ballcarrier, a bearing for each spindle, and a laterally-adjustable bracket, wherein said bearing may be moved upward and downward, means for adjusting said brackets laterally,
and means for rotating the spindles, sub
stantially as set forth.
5. In a polishing-machine of the class described, the combination with a frame, a suitable work-holder arranged on the same, and means for moving said work-holder forwardly and backwardly, of a plurality of vertical rotatable spindles arranged above said work-holder, a hollow polishing-ball carrier for each spindle, and capable of containing any desired polishing material, means for removably attaching the ball-carriers to the rotatable spindles, a plurality of felt balls projecting from the under side of each ballcarrier, a bearing for each'spindle, and a laterally-adjustable bracket, wherein said bearing may be moved upward and downward,'a
belt-pulley on the upper end of each spindle,
an electric motor, means for mechanically connecting said motor to the belt-pulleys on the spindles, and means for laterally adjusting said brackets, substantially as set forth.
