DUST-"PAN" Specification of Letters Patent.
:atentecl May 15, 1906.
Application filed February 2'7, 1906. Serial No. 247,626.
ful Improvements in Dust-Pans; and I do" hereby declare that the following is a full,
. clear, and, exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View. Fig. 2 is a section on line 2 2, Fig. 1.
The present invention has relation to dustpans; and it consists in the novel arrangement hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures of the draw- In the accompanying drawings, 1 re resents the bottom of the dust-pan, whic is formed ol a size or ual to the size of the dustpan designed to e constructed. The bot tom 1 is formed conveXo-concave, and the forward portion of the bottom is provided with the flange 2, which flange diverges from the forward edge of the bottom and extends rearward a short distance, and the rear edge of the flange 2 is provided with the downturnod portion or flange 3, which llangeis secured in an y convenient and. well-known manner to the bottom 1.
in the manufacture the flanges 2 and 3 may be and preferably are formed integral with the bottom and folded into the position illnstra ted in the drawings, by which arrangement the forward portion of the dust-pan constitutes an integral structure. The side plates 4 are l'ormod by bending portions of the bottom, and also the back 5 is formed by bendinga portion of the bottom plate. This otmsti'ucthm, however, is common in dustpans and needs no detailed description. The
objvvt and pin-pose of forming the bottom convoxo-concaro is to'provide for contactpoints only at the extreme forward edge and the extreme bar-k edge of the dust-pan proper, by which arrangement the extreme point of the d List-pan will at all times lie in contact with the floor or carpet. An-
other object and purpose of forming the bottom convexo-concave is to form an elevation between the flange 3 and the back plate 5, thereby assisting in holdin the material swept onto the dustan. T 1e flange 3 also prevents the materia swept onto the bottom of the dust-pan from accidental displacement therefrom; but by forming the bottom conveXo-concave two elevations are resented against the removal of the materia from the dust-pan.
In use it is desirable to revent the dustpan from moving backwar during the time the material is being swe t onto the dust-pan, and to provide against t n's backward movement the points 6 are rovided, which points are formed short and inclined rearward, so that they will have a tendency to pierce the floor or carpet when backward pressure is brought against the dust-pan, and thereby hold the dust-pan against any accidental movement. hepoints 6 may be and pref= erably are formed separate and attached in any convenient and well-known manner.
If desired, the dust-pan proper may be provided with a handle, such as 7, which handle may be of any desired length.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire tosecure by Letters Patent, is
As an improved article of manufacture, a dust-pan, rovided with a eonvexo-concaved bottom, t e upper or convexed face constituting the floor of the pan and the under or concaved portion the contact portion, a diverging flange extended upward and rear-. ward over a part ofthe conv xo-concaved bottom, a flange extended downward from the upper rear edge of the rearward-extended diverging flange,.and said. flange located forward of the uppermost point of the convexoconcaved bottom, and contact-points located at the rear edge of thebottom, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that'I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN T. CURTIS.
