BRAKE-SHOE.
To all whom it Vmay concern:
Beit known that we, 'HENRY T. HORNSBY -and THOMAS R. WESTON, citizens of the United States, residing at Springfield, Greene county, Missouri, have jointlyinvented a, certain new and useful im rovementin Brake.
others. skilled in the art to which it appar#y tains to make and use the same, reference beingehadto the accom anying drawin s, forni in art of this speci cation, in Whio -T igure l is a back viewofV our im roved brake-shoe. Fig. 2 is a side' elevations. View. Fi; 3 is a cross-sectional view on the line 3 3 of ig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a cross-seotionai view ontheline44ofFi .2.
This invention re ates to a new and useful improvement in brake-shoes, the object. bei to provide the brake-shoe with a removab e back ca able of continued use' in corinection with ierent shoes.
Heretofore it has been the practice in `iminufac, turing brake-shoes to cast the keylug and body portion of the shoe so that V there existed a permanent (or integral, as the case may be) connection between thetwo, and when the shoe became Worn and had to be repiaced the old shoe had to 'be thrown away, entailing a loss b waste of the parts which were ih sufficient y goed sha e Ito be4 usedcver again. In the practice o our in-l vention We provide a removable backing for the shoe, securing said backing in position by `fastening devices preferabl permanently connected to the shoe, where y atemporary connection is established between 'the backy ing and the shoe, so that Whenthe shoe is Worn If the backing is Vin good shape these temporary fastenings may be manipulated lso as to enable the backing to be removed from the old shoe and used in connection with a new shoe. f With these objects in vievvT the invention consists inthe construction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts, all as wilibe hereinafter described, and afterward pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, 1 indicates the body of the brake-shoe, referabl made of cast iron or steel, and in t e face o which may be em- Spedication of'Lettex-s Patent. Appiication ned member 22,1905. sessi m. 293,009.
' bedded the usual inserts 2. `Where the body of thebraiieshoe is 4made of cast-iron, these bac 'ng to hold it in retarded may s, 190e.
inserts' may be of a soft metal, such as Wrought-iron, or in the event the body of the shoeis made of steel or other soft metal the inserts 2 may be made oflchilled iron or other hardmatemal. So faras the body of the shoe, the inserts, and the,4 material of which they are composed are. concerned they may character. Brepresentston be of the usual or any approved design or t es of sheet metal, Y referlabl- We efshape with, the enlarge ends em eddV lin'the materialrconstituting the body of theshoes.v These tongues are preferably laced inV osition in the mold before the'bo of the s oe is cast; so that the cast instal owe' around the tongues and the tongues are permanently connected to the body of the shoe, Thera may be any desired number of these tongues and they may be arranged in' any convenient position on the shoe.
4 is the backing of the shoe, which is referably made o sheet metal resse or stamped into shape, so as to co erm to the back of the` shoe. This-backin `4 in beingk mounted on a shoe is arranged etween the ton es 3, and said ton es are bent over the ace, Vas shown. The bod Y portion of the s oe at the ends of the bacing is preferably provided with shoulders 5 to assist in holding theba'cking imposition, and in addition the body portion is preferahi f provided with lugs i, extending up on eac sideo the key-o ening and into the centrai raised portion o the backing. By this method of mounting the backing it is prevented from inde endent movement in any direction with re ation to the body of the shoe. Should the shoe become Worn, it is only necessary to bend back the tongues 3, when thebacking can be removed and used on a new shoe.
We are aware that minor changes in the construction arrangement, and combination of the several parte of our device can be made and substituted for thoseV herein shown and described without 4in the least departing from seA is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
1. A brakeshoe having a removable backing formed of sheet metal and following the shape of the shoe, in combination with fastening devices embedded in the back of the body portion of the shoe and ada ted to be bent to engage a portion of the bac ing to hold it in position; substantially as described.
2. In a brake-shoe, the combination wi th a body portion havin flexible fasteningtongues embedded in t e back thereof, and a removable sheet metal backing having a raised portion for enga ement with a brakekey and adapted to be ligeld in position by the flexible tongues which are bent to engage the same; substantially as described.
3. In a brake-shoe, the combination with a body portion, of fastenin devices permanently Vconnected therewit a sheet-metal backing havin a raised portion for coperation with the rake-key, and le or extensions formed integral with the ack of the body portion and extendin into the raised portion of the sheet-meta back; substantially as described.
4. The herein-described brake-shoe, the same having iiexibletongues embedded in o the body portion thereof, shoulders on the back of the body portion adjacent its ends, and a removable backing' engagin said shoulders and held in position bv saidexible tongues; substantially as described.
5. The herein-described brakevshe, the same having wedge-shaped iiexible ongues arranged in the back thereof, the larger arts tongues being embedded in the ody of sai of the shoe; substantiall as described.
In testimony Whereo we hereunto affix ouxl signatures, in the resence of two witnesses, this 16th da of ecember,1905.
