Description

UNITED STATES PATENT- OFFICE.
JUSTUS A. TRAUT, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO STANLEY RULE &
BRITAIN,
LEVEL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 8, 1906.
Application filed October 23, 1905- Serial No. 283.930-
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JUsTUs A. TRAUT, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Britain, county of Hartford, Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Levels, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in levels.
It has been customary in the past to provide levels with means of adjustment accessible from the exterior of the beam and also to effect the adjustment by means of the screws by which the mechanism is attached to the beam. I have sought to simplify the construction so as to enable the level to be manufactured at reasonable cost. I have also sought to perfect the means of mounting the level and the means of adjustment, so that the parts cannot be readily tampered with, but may be adjusted properly and securely held in place.
The principles of the invention are illustrated in the accompanying single sheet of drawings.
Figure 1 is a plan View of the construction embodying the improvements of my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar View with the coverplate removed. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of a level-beam, showing the mechanism in side elevation.
Only the fragment of a beam is shown in drawings; but it is obvious that the beam the may be of any len might be placed at right angles to the length of the beam as Well as longitudinally.
1 indicates a fragment of the beam. A mortise is cut in one edge of the beam for the reception of the mechanism and two cut-out plortlons 2 on the sides for sighting the bube. 3 is the base-plate of the mechanism, adapted to be securely fastened to the beam by means of wood-screws 4 4 at the opposite ends.
5 is a level-glass case or carrier supported at opposite ends on the springs 6 6.
7 7 are adjusting-screws assing through the ends of the carrier and ta g into tapped holes in the base-plate.
8 is the level-tube, of glass, as is customary,
ing the cover-plate 9.
th and that the level mate contact and cemented or secured in place in the carrier in anysuitable manner.
All the parts of the mechanism thus far described are mounted beneath the plane of the outer surface of the level-beam.
9 is a cover-plate let in flush'with the upper face of the beam and secured in place by a number of screws, as 10. This cover-plate is imperforate over the adjusting-screws 7 7, and thus prevents tampering with the same. When the mechanism is being assembled, the level-body is adjusted by tightening or loosening the screws 7 7 and afterward secur- After the level is once adjusted it may be reset when necessary by removing the cover-plate 9.
The advantages are apparent.
What I claim is 1. A level construction comprising a beam, a recess therein, a single base-plate adapted to said recess, a level-glass carrier, said carrier being adjustably connected at its ends only to said, base-plate, said connection comprising adjusting-screws passing through the ends of said carrier and into said baseplate, a spiral spring adjacent to one of said screws and near the end of said carrier and arranged to press the carrier into intimate contact with the under side of said adjustingscrew head, screw-passages extending vertically through the base-plate and arranged outside of that part of the base-plate covered by the carrier whereby said baselate may be secured to said beam after the base, carrier and adjusting devices have been assembled, and a protective removable cover overstandmg and protecting all parts of the carrier and base, said cover-plate having a central perforation to allow of the inspection of the level-glass.
2. A level construction comprising a beam, a recess therein, a single base-plate adapted to said recess, a level-glass carrier, said carrier being adjustably connected at its ends only to said base-plate, said connection comprising adjusting-screws passing throu h the ends of said carrler and into said base-p ate, a spiral spring adjacent to each of said adjusting-screws and near the ends of said carrier and arranged to press the carrier into intiwith the under side of said adjusting-sorew heads, screw-passages extendlng vertically through the base-plate and arranged outside of that part of the base-plate covered by the carrier whereby said baseplate may be secured to said beam after the base, carrier and adjusting devices have been assembled, and a protective removable cover overstanding and protecting all parts of the 1 carrier and base, said cover-plate having a central perforation to allow of the inspection 10 CHAs. B. STANLEY.
It is hereby certified that in Letters Patent No. 820,028, granted May 8, 1906,
upon the application 01 Justus A. Traut, of New Britain, Connecticut, for an improvement in Levels, errors appear in the printed specification requiring correction, as
follows:-Page 1, line 33, the word the following the word beam should be stricken out and inserted before the word drawings, same line; and that the said Letters Patent should be read with these corrections therein that the samemay conform to the record of the case in the Patent Office.
Signed and sealed this 22d day of May, A. 1)., 1906.
F. I. ALLEN,
Commissioner of Patents.
