Beit known that I, GARDNER A. BELKNAP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Conneautville, in the county of Crawford and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railroad- My invention relates to railroad crossties and it consists in providing a tie made of cement and covered on its top and sides with sheet metal. Rail-fastening meansare also mounted in transverse slots in the tie and a hooked rod secured by means of a nut and having a wide portion adapted to fit between the shanks of the buttons aforesaid and hold them in a securing position, i

In the drawings similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views. The core is cut out, as shown at K, from under the slots E at each end of the casing, and L represents a-rod inserted in said cutout portion, having a hook M at one end, a node portion N ad'acent to said hook, and its other end provide with screw-threads l.

S represents a nut secured on threaded portion 1, and T an inverted-U-shaped lockmg member havin beveled sides t to fit the ends of notch 0, said locking member engag ing the sides of nut S to prevent it from turnmg.
In securing the rail H in position the buttons G are first placed in position by inserting their shanks I in circular hole 0 and then sliding a button to the extremity of each slot D. The rail is then placed in position, the edge of its base being slid against the button-heads g. The rod L is then inserted in the cut-out portion Kof core B, and the hook M, emerging from slot E, clamps the other side ofthe base of rail H, while the wide portion N, adjacent to the hook M, fits between the sanks I of buttons G and keeps them from movement. The rod L is held in position by means of clip P, through the hole 1) of which the tln'eaded end Z of said rod is inserted, while not S serves to tighten the rod and securely clamp the base of the rail between buttons G and hook M. After the nut S is tightened on the rod the looking member T is driven into position and the rail is securely fastened in position.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim 1s l. A rail-fastening device for railroad-rails consisting of a cross-tie having a transversely and longitudinally slotted top, buttonsto fit in said transverse slots, rods havin hooks thereon rojecting from said longitudinal slots, and means to secure said buttons and rods in position, substantially as shown and described.
2. A rail-fastening device for railroad-rails comprising a cross-t1e having a circular hole adjacent to each end with slots extending therefrom transversely of the tie and slots extending longitudinally of the tie, buttons having round shanks to fit into said circular holes and narrow webs to fit into the slots extending from said circular holes, a rod having a hooked end projecting from each longituand rods in position, substantially as shown and described.
3. A rail-fastening device for railroad-rails comprising a cross-tie having a circular hole adjacent to each end with slots extending therefrom transversely of the tie and slots extending longitudinally of the tie, buttons having round shanks to fit into said circular holes and narrow webs to fit intothe slots extending from said circular holes, a rod having a hooked end projecting from-each longitudinal slot, a wide portion on each rod to fit between the button-shanks, and means to secure the rods in position, substantially as shown and described.
4. A railroad-tie comprising an inverted casin a core of lastic material in said casing, the top of said casing provided with circular holes adjacent to each end with slots extending therefrom transversely of the tie and slots extending longitudinally of the tie, the core aforesaid channeled under said top from the longitudinal slots to the ends of the tie, buttons having round shanks to fit into said circular holes and narrow webs to fit into the slots extending from said circular hole transversely of the tie, heads on said buttons to fit the edges of the rail-base, a rod inserted in each channel in said core having a wide portion seated between the shanks on said buttons, a hook on one end of each .rod projecting from the lon itudinal slotin the tie and clamping the other edge of the base of the rail, a dovetail-shaped notch at each end of the top, a clip secured in said notch having a hole therein to receive the free end of the rod, said free end of the rod threaded, a
nut secured on said threads, and an inverted- U-shaped member inserted in said notchv and engaging the sides of the nut, substantially as shown and described.
5. A railroad-tie comprising an inverted top from the longitudinal slots to the ends of the tie, buttons havinground shanks t0 fit into said circular holes and narrow webs to fit into the slots extending from said circular holes transversely of the tie, heads on said buttons to fit the edges of the railbase, a rod inserted in each channel in the core having a wide portion seated between the shanks on said buttons, a hook on one end of each rod projecting from the longitudinal slot in the tie andclampingthe other edge of the base of the rail, a dovetail-shaped notch at each'end of the top, a clip secured in said notch having a hole therein to receive the free end of the rod, said free end of the rod threaded, a nut secured on said threads, and an inverted-U shaped member inserted in said dovetailshaped notch having beveled sides to fit said notch and engaging the sides of said nut, substantially as shown and described.
