Description

No. 817,077. PATENTED APR. 3, 1906. A. W. LEWIS.
GAR COUPLING AND DRAW HEAD.
APPLICATION FILED NOV. 23, 1905.
UNITED S'IA'lfliS PATENT Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 3, 1906.
Application filed November 28,1905. Serial No. 288,761.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ARTHUR WALTER LEWIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Moscow, in the county of Hickman and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Couplers and Draw-Heads; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference eing had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in carcouplers and drawheads; and it consists in the provision 0; means whereby the draw-heads may be supported by interlocking wings as the couplers are released, and comprises various details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is a top plan view of my invention, showing the two couplers connected together. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, and Fig. 3 is an end view of one of the coupler-heads and laterally-extending inclined wings.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A A designate two coupler-heads, each having a forked end and each bein recessed. C C designate two angled coup ers, each pivotally mounted upon a pin D, held in one of the arms at the forked end of each coupler-head. E designates a gravity coupling-pin mounted in apertures in the coupler-heads and designed to hold an arm of each angled coupler within the chambered or recessed portion of the head, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
Projecting from the opposite edges of each coupler-head are the wings F and F, which project spirally in alinement with each other from opposite sides of the coupler-heads, one of said wings being upwardly inclined, While the other is downwardly inclined, and each wing is provided with. a contracted portion midway its length. The upper face of the wing F is beveled to a thin edge F and the under surface of the wing F is similarly beveled, as at H. (Shown clearly in Fig. 3 of the drawings.) Each coupler-head is provided with similar wings which when they come together the inclined surface H of one wing will contact with the inclined surface of the upper face of the wing F, thus guiding the two draw-heads so that the couplers will interlock in the manner shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
From the foregoing it will be observed that by the provision of a coupler apparatus as shown and described means is afforded for holding the draw-heads from dropping upon the tracks of a railway in case of any breakage and while a train equipped with the couplers is in motion.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A car-coupler comprising two heads, each having a recessed end, and a chambered portion in the edge thereof, an angled coupling pivotally mounted within each chambered portion, Wings projecting from the opposite edges of each coupler-head and in alinement with each other and spirally arranged, each of said wings having a contracted shank portion midway of its length and the free end of each wing widened and beveled in opposite directions, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aiflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses. ARTHUR WVALTER LEWIS.
Witnesses:
A. W. FOWLER, G. W. JOHNSON.
