JONAS R. FOSTER, or NEW YQRI N. Y..Ass1eNoR TO EBERHARD'FABER,

' on NEW YORK, N. Y. I

PEN-WIPER.

Specification of Letters Patent.

Patented March 27, 1906.

To all whom it may concern:

. Be it known that L'JoNAs R. FosTER, a. citizen of the United States, residin in the borough of Brooklyn, in the county o Kin s, city and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Pen- Wipers, of which the following is a specification.

The. object of the invention is to provide a pen-wiper which shall be durable and efficient and which may be manufactured in lar e quantities at low cost. e v

11 carrying out the invention I employa wiper of felt or other absorbentrnaterial, the edge whereof is provided with a series of recesses each two of which are on either side of a projection, the curvature of the recesses and the projections being such as to adapt them for cleaning the inside and the outside, respectively, of the en. This wiper may be of one ormore thic messes and is preferably secured in a holder comprising two parallel plates, one on eitherside of the wiper, said plates being secured together by any suitable means such, for instance, as an eyelet passed through said plates and through the wiper and turned over or crimped at its end upon the external surfaces of said plates.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in whichigure 1 is a plan view of a pen-wiper employing my invention, and Fig. 2 is a cross? section thereof on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.

Referring to these drawings, A designates a wiper preferably of felt or other suitable material and of any desired thickness. In the present instance thisis shown as disklike in form and comprising two thicknesses A A the periphery thereof being provided with alternate recesses a and projections 0/. Also these recesses and projections are shown as continuously curved, the width of each recess being substantially the same as that of each projection and such width being calculated with reference to the average lateral dimensions'of a pen, the object being that when the outside of a pen is pressed into and drawn past one of the recesses that surface of the pen will be adequately wiped and cleaned,

contact being made over the entire outer surface of the pen, while if the inner surfaceof" the pen be pressed upon and drawn past one of the projections similar contact is made and that surface adequately wiped and cleaned. Theuse of the twothicknesses A A of thewiper makes it possible to conveniently remove the pen from the holderas, for instance, by pressing the en between the edges of such thicknesses and same to prevent soiling the fingers. Also the pen may,- if desired, be further cleaned in this way.

The holder shown in the present example of the invention comprises two parallel plates or disks B B, which may be of metal, celluloid, or similar material. These are provided with central orifices corresponding with a similar orifice in the secured together, the wiper A between them, by, means of an eyelet C, the ends whereof are crimped downward upon the external surfaces of said plates or disks B B.

As will readily be understood, the penwiper above described may be made in large quantities at very low manufacturing cost and in addition described has the added utility of being available for advertising matter imprinted either upon the exposed surface of the. wiperor upon one or both of the holder-plates. After the wiper has become saturated with ink it Inay be immersed in water, which will restore the cleanliness as well as the elasticity thereof.

Having now described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pat-,

ent, is-

A pen-wiper comprising flat absorbent material having a continuously irregular periphery formed by alternate rounding recesses and rounding projections corresponding generally to the average curvature of a pen, parallel plates material and each having an opening therethrough, and means, such as an eyelet extending throu h said openings, for securing the plates an said absorbent material together, substantially as described.

' This specification signed and witnessed this 1 '13'th-day of October, 1905. JONAS R. FOSTER.
