My invention consista in combining with s hollow piston-hond, covering the induction-passage to the pipe, two cnp-shsped shoulders or stops, os hereinafter set forth.

In the drawings, A indicates tho hollow piston-rod or pipe; B B, the cup-shaped shoulders or stops secured thereon, und 0 the hollow pistondlssd, which plays between the shoulders or stops, ond admits water slternstely on opposite sides.

Several devices srs already hnovm in which the piston-heed slides between shoulders to admit the water alternately on opposite sides. Mino di'ers from them in t'lo particulars: first, the piston-hoed is msde hollow, and oneloses the indnction-opening in ell positions; and second, the stops B src msdn in the form of cops, to receive the iriipsct of the piston-head.

The hollow piston-hond enclosing the induction-opening serves os n. reserve-cheminer, so thot nt the runnen'. of reversing the motion. the dow is moro sensitive toward tbe pipe. it also serves, at that moment, es n. check to the csoape ol' water outward, since the impulse is lateral tonni-d the closed sides. It furthermore admits oi' the opening being ent directly in the body of the pipe, without any collar or other addition to the letter.

1n addition to the above, the water hns ot all times n frcs occess to opening b; therefore tho piston-hood requires less ploy between the shoulders than when the noter is admitted outside the hond.

The stops B B, holding n reserve of vretcr in the cops n a, form cushions, ns it were, for the impact of the piston-hond, whereby the grcnt shock ond rolling nre obvisted, ond tho parts nre less liable to hreaknge.
