f. The journal c3 Be 'it known that; I, WILLIAM E. LAW- through the k RENCE, a citizen ofthe UnitedStates, residing at Brooklyn', inthe county of Kings and have inventedcertain 'new and useful Improvements in Hacksaws, .of which the following is a specification, such eeper d, which is connected with the part a of. theframe or holder, and keeper d, which 4is connected with'l the part'b of the frame or holder, is provided with .a rotatable member or plug e,- which is similar inform incross-section to the journal c3 of the handle c2 and which is preferably of the same dimension, and as thus constructed it Will `be seen that both of the keepers d' are each provided with a rotatable member, the said rotatable member in one case consisting of a journal formed on the handle c and in the AJt'a pertains to make and use the same.. his vinvention relates to hacksaws; and provide improved heldin different position or With the4 plane of the handle c2 is inserted other case bya separateand independent cythereof at different Yangles tojthe'rame or lindrical-shaped plug, and said cylindrical? holden i shaped plug is provided with a head e2. .f Theinvention is ullfy disclosed in the ol- Each of the keepers d is provided in one l gnatedbysuitable F1g-3, a back j xwith the saw in 4, a section plemental members a2 members with which c2 is provided with a showing 1 cation I have shown a hac is U-shaped in form and composed of two similar side memb and b, preferably the 4cured by bolts, rivets, or 'screws d3.
lowing specication, o
' drawings .separate parts of -which the accompaside, preferably the front side, and in the botform a part, in which the tom thereof with a transverselyarranged slot my improvement are d'esig' f, and the journal ca'of the handled and the reference characters in each rotatable" member or plug e are each ,proo the views,` and in whichvided` with a pin, lu'g, or projection f2, and Figure 1 is a side'view of a hacksaw prothe pins f2 pass through the 'slots f and are e with a frame or holder similar to that movable therein. granted tome December 6, 1904,No.776,602',. The horizontal portions a2 and b2 and showing my improved means for conframe members b are provided at regular innecting the saw with the frame or holder and tervals with holes g, and said portions are the parts in. different positions in connected yby a pivot dotted nes; Fig. 2, a view similar toy Fig. 1, device g2, which is adapted to be passed but showing the saw in a different position; vthrough any of the holes g in the parts a2 and 'view ofthe frame or holder b2, and, mounted on said parts a2 and b2 is a the position shown in Fig. 2-
l, slide or movable .collar g3. on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1'; and he saw@ is provid ed at its opposite ends Fig. 5 afview similar to Fig. A1, but showing a with holes 7L, through which the ins, lugs, modification. or projections f2 areadapted to be passed,
In the drawings forming `and in connecting the saw with the frame or art of this sp eciiholder the pivot pin or screw saw-frame which ers a and b, each of which is substantially E shaped in form, said members a and b being provided, respectively, With supand b2, which are substantially at right angles vto the main side thesaw c4 isconnected. Connected with one of the side members a member a, as shown 'in the' drawings, is a handle c2, and the handle journalcs. Each oi' thev frame is provided wi th a in the form of construc- -1 to 4, inclusive, of a into such shape as to of the handle c2, with side plates a and b are se-` `the movable collar or slide g3 is 'moved along the parts a? and b2 of said frame or holder until it or screw g2, when the part b may ,be slightly tilted, so that thesaw may be connected 'therewith Vand with the part a, after which lthe part b2 is, swung vshown in full lines in Fig. 1 and the collar or dle c2 into the position also shown in full lines in Fig. 1. This operation, as will be, understood, draws the it in the desired sired to detach t e is reversed and the part b ofthe framev is swung into the position shownin4 dotted lines `in Fig. 1, or substantially so.` In Fig. 1 .of l the drawings the saw cis shown i'n the plane arts .ai and b of the eeper d, composed tion' shown in Figs. of metal bent and said keeperis provided d2, between which the parts ofthe pin, screw, or similar.
is adj acent to said pivot pind A full lines in Fig.` 2, and the saw c may be to form the keeper or sltions mthe nected therewith or holder, and in order to do this the parts a and scription that the framey or holder'comprises two parts which together form a U-shaped frame or holder the sides of which are separated the length of the saw, or substantially so, and provided with overlapping members which form the cross-head portion of the U- shaped frame, which is parallel with the s aw i when the latter is in position. It will also be 'seen that the separate parts of the frame are longitudinally adjustable, as shown in dotted parallel with the Aframe or holder and slightly in front of the frame or holder, as will be seen on an examination oi Fig. 4; but, if desired, the saw may be swung into the position shown in Figs. 2 and 3, in which the plane of the saw will be at right angles to the plane or b must be adjusted by moving the collar or slide qa in the direction of the part b of the frame' or holder in turning the handle c2 and the rotatable member or plug e, so that the pins, lugs, or projections f 2 will project downwardly, as shown in dotted lines in Figs. 4 and 5 and in full lines in Fig. 2.
It will be understood that all that is necessar in order to attach the saw is'to move the y colar or slide g2 toward the part b of the frame or holder, so that said part will tur-n slightly on the pivot pin or screw g2, and then place the saw in position on the pins, lugs, er projections f2, after which the slide or collar g3 is moved back to the position shown in ent lengths may be employed.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim asnew, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A saw frame or holder having opposite parallel vside members provided at their ends, and at one side thereof transverse slots,an d rotatable devices mounted in said keepers and rovide'd with'V ins which pass through said s ots and with which a saw is adapted to be connected, the .plane of the saw when in position being parallel tIie frame, described.
with that of said side members of 'substantially as shown and turned from one position to another in the same manner.
In Fig. 5 I have shownl a modification in which the-parts a and b of the frame are bent keepers d, and with this form of construction the saw c may be held in front of the frame or holder or at the back thereof, according to the manner or method of bndingthe parts a and b to form the keepers v By means of my improvement it will be seen that the saw may be held in various porame or holder and may be also easily, quickly, and conveniently conf detached therefrom, and changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be made without departing from ,the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
It will also be seen from frame being-provided with parallel side members, said side members being provided at their ends with keepers having transverse slots, and rotatable devices mounted in said keepers and provided with pins which pass through said slots, the axis of said rotatable devices being` at one side of and parallel with the plane of the, side members of the frame, substantially as shown and described.
In testimon that I claim theforegoing as my invention have signed myname in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 29th day of December, 1904.
