Myinvention relates to door-checks and closers, and articularly to the means for connecting t e spring mechanism tothe checking mechanism, means for varying the tension thereof, and means for facilitating the assembling of the parts.

The main casing 1 is provided with a bracket or back 1, by which the check may be secured in place on a door. The sleeve 1cv is removable, and within the` tained the check-piston 5, 2 is a spindle which has a lower bearing in the bottom of case 1. f

The lower part of said airchamber communicates with the interiorv of the said case 1 by means of back flow-ports formed by grooves in a corrugated washer 3a. These ports permit any liquid that may be s lashed or ulnped into said annular airo amber to ow back to said case.

The upper dog is ormed of two separate and relatively adjustable members, (indicated by 9 and 9%) and the same are constructed and operated in thevmanner hereinafter described.

Upon the main case 1 is a stop 12, which projects into this groove 8a and which limits the rotative movement of the lower do 8in one direction. The shield (as such) might be formed by a loose sleeve, such as 9, Figs. 6 and 7, located between thecase 1 and the dog 9, or it mightbe dispensedwith entirely. In

The lug 9d is carried by the upper-dog gear 9";l and affords the means to which the upper end ofthe spring 7 is attached. Upon the middle dog 1() is a laterally-projecting lug 10b. Upon the upper part of the lower dog is anv upwardly-projecting lug or stop-shoulder 8b. Upon the lower side of the upper dog is a depending IOO position, the stop-shoulder 9r will lbear stop-shoulder 9e. These two stop-shoulders 8b and 9e rest on opposi te sides of the laterally-projecting lug 10b when the parts are in a position of rest. bined door check and closer, the parts are assembled as follows: The piston 5 is connected to the spindle 2, and the cylinder 1b is screwed into place. The lower dog 8 isv slipped over the middle dog 10, passing the llateral proj ectionl 0b by causing theclearancerecess 8c to register therewith. The spring is then applied, the upper dog is put in place, and inally all these parts are attached to a check by slipping the middle dog down over the spindle 2. The part 9aL of the upper dog is then turned until the proper tension is given to the spring, whereupon the latch 11 is thrown into action, securely holding the two parts of the upper do against independent movement. When t e parts are in this against the stop 1d, while the stop 12 will bear in one end of the groove 8B.' The lug 9e will bear agiinst one side of the lateral projection 10b, w le the lug 8b will bear against the opposite side thereof.
13 is a lever-'arm by which the apparatus is connected to the door-casing,said arm being Xed upon the head of the middle'do 10. When the lever-arm 13 is given a right- 'and movement, it rotates the middle dog 10, which in turn rotates the lower dog 8 and winds up the spring, the opposite end ofthe spring being held securely by the then sta-' tionary upper dog 9. When the lever 13 is released, the spring will restore the parts to the original position. ,When the lever isl swung inv an opposite direction, the projection 10b will engage and rotate the upper dog 9 through the medium of the stop-shoulder9e. The rotation of the upper dog will wind the spring, which is anchored at its other end, through the medium of the then stationary lower dog 8. When the lever is released, the parts are returned to their ori inal position.
In Fig. 8 the construction 1s substantially the same as that previously described, referring to Figs. 1 and 2, save that the shield 9b is dispensed with, while the separate loose shield 9c (see Figs. 6 and 7) is shown in place in dotted outline.

One great advantage of this construction resides in the fact that the spring mechanism may be entirely dispensed with, thus enabling the apparatus to be used solely as a check for a door, which, for example, may be provided with spring-hinges. When so used, the apparatus would assume substantially the a pearance indicated in Fig. 10, in which t e lever-arm is indicated at 13 and is provided with a cap-sleeve 13b, arranged to fit over the upper end of the spindle and be connected thereto in the same manner as the middle dog previously described.
What I claim is- 1. In an apparatus of the character described, a spindle, a checking-piston eccentrically connected thereto a checking-cylinder, spring-actuated mechanism for said spindle, comprising an intermediate dog detachably secured to said spindle, a lower dog supported by said intermediate dog and coacting therewith, anupper dog supported by said intermediate dog and coactlng therewith, a spring connecting said upper and lower dogs, stop mechanism to engage said-upper and lower dogs and check the simultaneous rotation of said dogs in the same direction and a liever-arm connected to said intermediate In an apparatus of the character described, a case having a closed liquid-chamber, a cylinder communicating therewith, a piston therein, a spindle having bearings in said= case, an eccentric connection between said piston and spindle, a double acting spring, indirect means of connection between said spring and said s 'indle, a lever-arm indirectly connected wit said spindle and a removable shield for said spring said shield being independent of said case.

In an apparatus of the character described, a case having a closed liquid-chamber, a piston therein, a spindle having bearings in' said case, a connection between said piston and spindle, a spring, means of connection between said spring and said spindle, a lever-arm indirectly connected with said spindle'and with said spring, and a shield for said s ring independent of said case and connecte directly to and carried by one of the movable parts of the spring -controlled mechamsm.
4. In a device of the. character described, a
spindle, bearings therefor, a piston connecte to said spindle, an intermediate dog carried by said spindle, a lever-arm connected thereto, an upper and a lower dog rotatably mounted upon said intermediate dog, a spring connecting said upper and lower dogs, stop mechanism for said upper and lower dogs, and a shoulder on said intermediate dog engaged on opposite sides by said upper and lower dogs respectively.
