' APPARATUS FORVHOL'DTING SAWS.-
5 and State 0 Michigan, have invented certain I new and useful Improvements in Apparatusv for Holding Saws and I do declare the following to beg-a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilledin the art to which it. appertains to make and use the same, re ference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in apparatus for holding saws while being filed; and the object of the invention is to produce a device of this character whereby the saw may be tilted and held in difierent angles convenient to operate upon the same by the person sitting upon the bench forming a part of the apparatus.
The invention consists, further, in various details of construction, combinations, and areggranger'nents of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
My invention is illustrated in the accom panying drawings, inwhich- Figure 1 is a perspective view ofmy improved apparatus for holding saws. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view on line 2 2v of Fig. l. Fig. 3 isa detail view of one ofthe'clamplngplates, and Fig. 4 is asectional view on" line Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a bench mounted upon legs B, and C designates a round shank portlon of the swivel member Said shank portion erture'in the top of the bench, and an adjusting-screw D, mounted in a horizontally-disposed threaded aperture in the top-of the I bench, is adapted to frictionally engage the circumference of saidshank portion to hold the same in an adjusted position.
Plates E, secured to opposite edges of said head 0, support a bolt F, upon which a, winged nut F is mounted. The plates E are 1 somewhat flexible, whereby as the winged nuts tighten against the same the two plates will be drawn together, the bolt engaging the plate on the opposite side of the head. A
Specification of Letters ,Patent.

Patented March 20, 1906.
block H (shown clearly in Fig. 2 of the drawings) is mounted to turn upon said bolt, and plates K are fastened to said block and are slightly flexible and are fastened to the horizontally-disposed clamping-jaws N and' N, which are connected together by means of straps 0, made of leather or other suitable material. A headed bolt Q passes through registering apertures in said plates K K and the clamping-jaws and the Winged nut Q, mounted upon the threaded nut in said bolt Q, whereby the two clamping-jaws may be drawn together whenthe nut is tightened to securely hold the saw tobe filed by said j aws;
In operation it will be observed that a saw clamped by the jaws may be held either in a horizontal position or tilted at an angle, or by the provision-of-the swivel member the saw may be swung around in the horizontal axis, providing means for holding the saw at any angle to the operator sitting on the bench or located adjacent thereto.
While I have shown a particular construction of'apparatus embodying the features of my invention, it will be understood that I maym'ake alterations in the detailed construction of the same without in any way de- "parting from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is A, saw-holding apparatus comprising in combination with a bench, a swlvel-headed post mounted thereon, flexible plates secured to two of the opposite faces of the head of said post, the lower ends of said plates flush ,with the lower face of said head, a headed screw passing through registering apertures in said plates adjacent to their upper free ends, a block longitudinally apertured and mounted upon said screw, a winged nut upon the threaded end of the screw adapted to bear against the outer face of one of .said
plates, the plates K having contracted portions upon their lower ends secured in slots in said block, clamping members secured to the plates K, and means for holding the-same in clamping relation, asset forth. In testimony whereof -I hereunto afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses. JOHN. MOLEAN.
' Witnesses: DAN BEGRAN, ALVA EMBRY.
