Definitions
- My invention relates to life-saving apparatus, and more particularly to pneumatic lifesaving apparatus of that kind which may be inflated or otherwise filled with air or gas immediately before or after the bearer has come into the water; and it consists in means whereby the distribution of the air or gas may be regulated in such a manner that the person who wears the belt is always held in an upright position in the water.
- this result is obtained by means of tightening-bands or the like attached to the part of the belt lying over the back of the bearer and which are held together over the breast of the person and by means of which the belt may be tightened more or less against the back of the wearer, and thereby more or less of the air or gas pressed into that part of the belt whichis lying around the breast of the bearer.
- the capacity of the different parts of the belt may be regulated so that the wearer can be able to swim, to lie immovable in the water, or be held in the water in whatever position he may Wish.
- My invention is illustrated in the annexed drawing, which shows a constructional form vided with shoulder-straps and with means for tightening the belt on the body; in combination with means for compressing the inflated belt at the rear to displace the air or a portion thereof from the rear to the front, for the purpose set forth.
- a life-preserver comprising an inflatable belt adapted to encircle the body and provided with shoulder straps and with means for tightening the belt on the body; in combination with the bands (1 a attached to the lower edge of the belt midway of its ends, for the purpose set forth.

UNITED STATES BREDER CARLSEN, OF BODO, NORWAY.
LIFE-SAVING APPARATUS- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 6, 1906.
Application filed November 9, 1903. Renewed February 6. 1906. Serial No. 299/7 16.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BREDER OARLsEN, a subject of the King of Sweden and Norway, residing at Bodo, Norway, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Life Saving Apparatus; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which forms apart of this specification.
My invention relates to life-saving apparatus, and more particularly to pneumatic lifesaving apparatus of that kind which may be inflated or otherwise filled with air or gas immediately before or after the bearer has come into the water; and it consists in means whereby the distribution of the air or gas may be regulated in such a manner that the person who wears the belt is always held in an upright position in the water. According to my invention this result is obtained by means of tightening-bands or the like attached to the part of the belt lying over the back of the bearer and which are held together over the breast of the person and by means of which the belt may be tightened more or less against the back of the wearer, and thereby more or less of the air or gas pressed into that part of the belt whichis lying around the breast of the bearer. By this means the capacity of the different parts of the belt may be regulated so that the wearer can be able to swim, to lie immovable in the water, or be held in the water in whatever position he may Wish.
My invention is illustrated in the annexed drawing, which shows a constructional form vided with shoulder-straps and with means for tightening the belt on the body; in combination with means for compressing the inflated belt at the rear to displace the air or a portion thereof from the rear to the front, for the purpose set forth.
2. A life-preserver, comprising an inflatable belt adapted to encircle the body and provided with shoulder straps and with means for tightening the belt on the body; in combination with the bands (1 a attached to the lower edge of the belt midway of its ends, for the purpose set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
BREDER OARLSEN.
