TRACKSANDING APPARATUS.
Specification of' Letters Patent.
Patented March 6, 190.6.
aplicados ler May 25, 3905. Serial En. 262,515.
To (all Loh/m1, muy concern:
Bc it known that i, Bnmrs l). WiLLrrs, n. ciincn of the United Stmas, rosiding ai Dos Moines., in the county of Polk anni State of Iowa, have inventori c cortain new anni usciul Track-'Sanding Apparatus, of which thc following is c specification.
The objects of my invention are to provide a tracicscnding attachment for railway-Cors oi simple, durable, and inexpensive constrnftion designe-.fl to mitonmiicclly movc thc {iis- Y tion of t.'
sclf'i orr; Michon nwo); :in Li'. lino in show tlzc iront trucks beneath iii. Tho dotted irnos in scid view' lndicniv'e the position of the truck and the scndingnhes when the truck is moved rela-tivo to the curplcfcrm. Fig. 2 shows an enlarged detail sich rincl view through one of the sand-boxes anni my improved scnd-dclivering device connected therewith, and Fig. 2i shows c. sirio elevation of s part of rar and trncl: provided with my improved sanding apparatus,
Referring to flic accompanying drawings, I have used the reference-immoral l0 to indicato the car-bodv. ii indicates the truck- `lercmc7 and 12the car-whcels, scid truckfrcme being swivelcd to the car-hodv ci, 14. Mounted upon the csr-body is c santi-box 15 of the orrlinzirv kind provided with an opening 16 at its hottom covered by c slide 17, Secured beneath the scuri-box is coasting i8. foi-ined with c, l.: f 'coil tiion lil near iis toogiirovic'leri v. 'is' 20,:uni also foiiicii with s #np-s .npc-" giss'tition f2! ci its iisit ft iimn 'l'o [mriion i9 l) i contrai .Y mig' i.; "Mnuntmi in tiro @insha-nod punition 2l is c funn-cl 23, having n cup-shaped iop 2li fitted on top of thc psrtition 2i, thc rlismotoroi flic immo! 23 haring; such lict it may move iirnitcd iistcncc in any direction in thc opooinr 2133 that is to say, the cup-sii l top 24 `ovnis with the cup-shaped por .Jn 2i a universal joint. Secured to thc lower cmi of the funnel 23 is a. flexible hose or tube 25, having at its lowcr @mi an inverted-cup-shapcd part 26.
Tnenumcml 27 indicates a' c Avlinder, the upper end of which is open, sind t e top Incrgins of the upperend are inclined inwardly at The cup-sha` ed device 26 is fitted cc-V curatcly Within t :e cylinder 27, and the nfiper margin 28 ol the c linder `prevents tic cup-shaped device 26 om moving forwardly through the open top of the cylinder. Formed on thc bottom of the cylinder 27 is a curved discharge-spout 29.
Tho reference numeral 30 indicates bracket, one ond of which is secured to and supports the cylinder 27, While the other end is secured to the adjacent portion of the cartrnck 11, thus sup ortng the cylinder'f with thc spout 29 directlpT under the adjacent portion of the front. w cel of the truck, so that sand will he discharged directly infront of the whcoi.
l preferably movidosd complete sandbox and sanding apparatus for elch side of th car, as shown in Fig. 1.
in practical use and assuming that a car is provided with my improved sanding apparatus and isstcnding on a straight track, then the truck is malle] with the car, and the cyl'- ndcr 27 is ield in position directly in line with thc sand-box. vAssuming that the car passes over avcnrvcdV portion of*` the track, then the truck moves to an angle rclative to :he car. The cylinder 28 is of course carried with the truck and ishcld inan u right orsition, with the spout 29'in front 'oi-,the W esl?, by the bracket 30. This movement of the cylinder 27 not only inclincs the hoss 25 lat-V erally, but. it removes the cylinder 27 farther from the sand-box. When this movement4 occurs, the cup-shaped portion of the hose moves toward the' top ofthe cylinder 27 and when it reaches the top the cup-shcpeti end '26 ,ma f rotate in the top of the c linder, so i* that t c hose will be on a straig t line be tween the funnel 23 and the bop of the cylinder 27. The scid funnel also rocks in the cop-shaped partition 21, so that, no sharp bonds are nickle in the hose 25, which might tend to retard thc progress of sand through the hose.
Having thus described my invntion, what I claim, and desire to secure b f Letters Patcnt of the United States there or, is-' A 1. The combination with a car-body and a. swiveled truck, of a sand-box, a funnel to reccive discharge from the sand-box and having u universal movement with relation to thil sand-box, :i hose Connected with the faxnnrl, n hose-guide lined to thv truck, Said. hooi*y (-ntoringg the guido und having :t sliding connut-,tion lhmowith,
Tho conihinziition with n uan-body and n swivclcd trunk, o' n sanddiox, a` cup-shaped device upon thel smid-linx nnd communicatingy thorowiti sind having nn opening itt its lowler end, n` funnel having n` oupshapod top supported in said cup-shapeddeviceand hawing n universal movement therein, a hos@ connected with tho funnel and u diasclnnge spout connected with the cnr-tri1ck and ooxnxnunicntingJ with the hose.
3. The coinliinution with a cnr-bod)` sind :t swivflnd truck, of u Suindliox mounted on thv cnrdiody sind u device secured beneath the smid-linx and having a. (wup-shaped partition near itstop provided with n zentral opening and a cup-shaped partition near its hottoin piwivided with a ventral opening, a funnel with u` cup-shaped top fitted on the top of the lower mirtition and projvctedthroughthe opening therein, a hone connected with the lnnnol, and n spout `iipported on the cnr-- trnolt and communicating with the sind hone.
4. The combination with 2t citr-liody and n Swivoled truck, ol :L sand-box supported on l l l i the oar-liodv, n hosopivotally connected with the oar--liody and communicating with the sand-box, :i cylinder supported on the cartrilck and l'ormfd with a` spout nt its lower ond, said cylinder slidingl)7 and pivotally connected with tho hose.
5. Tho combination with a oar-body and swivcled truck, ol n sand-boxsu i orteil 0D the cur-lody, a device Supported Eelow the Sand-box und formed with a` cu shapd partition at its top having a contrai opening and a unphupud lPartition ut its bottoni having un opening, n unnel having a cup-Shaped top fitted on top of the lower cup-shaped par# tition and projecting through the opening therein, a hose secured to thel funnch ylindor, and si bracket 'fixed to the cylinder und to the nzirtruck, said cylinder having an open top the margins of which are curved inwardly said cylinder also' formed with u spout at its lower end and an inverted-cu -shaped device on the lower end of the hose s idingly mounted in the cylinder and noringillv engaging the sides of the cylinder.
